My Estradiol patch was covered by my insurance, $10 copay, also my progesterone is covered 90 day supply 200mg for $34.
I absolutely agree that there are hormone clinics popping up on every corner scamming women with all of these pellets and alternative treatments. Talk to you Gyn, bring with you printed out studies that show the benefits of Estradiol and Progesterone supplementation early on. Also, tell your Doctor what your goals are. Define your goals. If your gaols are to just reduce symptoms, then you will get offered the minimum dose to stop symptoms, however if your goals are to prevent bone loss, cardiovascular aging, neurological aging then you need the optimal dose that you can tolerate without side effects. Having the coversation with tour Doctor is your first step. I highly advise against hormone clinics. Magnesium, Ashwaganda and Progesterone is such a life changer for my sleep. Also, go out for a walk after dinner. Eat dinner as early as possible. Then take a walk after. Try to have 3 - 4 hrs before bed without eating.
prioritze protein and healthy fats in your diet. These tips have really helped me control symptoms and feel and look healthy.

Hi, I’m 53 with fibroids. I’ve tried so many things.
Estrogen makes the fibroids hemorrhage… I almost needed a transfusion once the estrogen pellets got to a certain level there was no turning back had to wait for it to wear off
I got the liletta IUD, it grew on my uterus causing hemorrhage but I could sleep well… they refused to take it out and it came half way out on its own, then they took it out.
Then body had to get use to not having progesterone at that level which caused hemorrhage again
It’s been 3 months since the IUD and things are getting better
Using bio progesterone cream for calmness and magnesium (calm powder) for good, good sleep.
I think it’s almost over if we don’t mess with estrogen until a year of no menstrual.
Then all the fibroids will begin to shrink down a lot.
Exercise 3x week reduces problems with fibroids and helps with heart, brain and bone risks.
      Be well.

Sleep is not valued in this culture especially in med school. Doctors in residency are expected to suck it up and function on minimal sleep. Functioning on minimal sleep is considered a badge of honor and doctors inflict this warped view on their patients. And this doc is supposedly a Lifestyle Medicine doctor.

This makes me so mad that the medical profession takes menopause as an “oh well it’s just a part of life “attitude” and it’s difficult to get any obgyn to listen to what we know about our own bodies. I had the same obgn since I was 18, she delivered my 5 children and took me through all the ups and downs of female stuff and my peri menopause until she retired in 2013 when I was 52. I was on a low dose birth control pill in my mid 30’s after my last child and She and I discussed the fact that since I was healthy and had no family history of breast cancer or other medical issues that I could stay on the birth control pill through menopause to keep my bones strong and my heart healthy through this journey and we’d keep testing to see how I was doing. I was on and off it to see where I was throughout all of this and was feeling amazing Sadly she retired and the new obgyn immediately took me off birth control and threw me into full blown menopause at the age of 52 and it was the most horrific time of my life. She had all my medical records and knew what the game plan was but she refused and said well those aren’t my beliefs. I found a new doctor and she was horrified that I was taken off the pill cold turkey and she offered to put me on an antidepressant for my hot flashes but I declined to do that. I researched and found some natural products that helped ease the symptoms and I am now 62 and on the other side. I eat well and exercise BUT I have achy joints, sleep deprived, dry skin, no motivation and just plain blah feeling. So we “old” women have to suffer unless we go to 100 doctors and hope to find one needle in the hay stack who will listen. I am now, as I believe, over the age to start estrogen therapy and will have to take meds to allow me to enjoy a long and healthy life but I am sure passing this info as well as Dr. Havers findings along to my daughter, nieces and any young woman I know before they go through this. Thanks for bringing this to the forefront 😊

You are not too old to go back on HRT. I just started oral Micronized Progesterone, transdermal Estradiol patch, and topical vaginal Estradiol cream (for GSM) more than 10 years post-menopause and at 60 years old. My new gynecologist is great and feels confident that I’m in good shape to start; namely, no history of heart issues, cardiac calcium score is zero, no insulin resistance or pre-diabetes, no obesity. I’m doing amazing; I’m sleeping better, have less irritability & brain fog, and vaginal dryness/pain are much improved. I’m hoping my bones and brain will be better protected now that I’ve started HRT.

Thank you both for covering this topic. I had just about every symptom of perimenopause including chest pain. Went to the cardiologist who dismissed all my concerns, offered no opinion on whether I should consider BHRT and just told me that I would have accept the possible risks without telling me what they could be. I directly asked if my hormone issues could be connected to my chest pain and he looked at me like I was silly and lastly said if my tests came back okay then he will just put me on a statin and sent me on my way. I am now on BHRT, no thanks to him, and all symptoms are gone. I've been working on lifestyle and I am very curious to see my labs after replacing hormones in combination with lifestyle changes but I can already tell you that I feel great.

Question: When discussing the standard of care, time stamp 35:40, reference is made to the AHA stating "loud and clear" that statins are not as effective as early HRT at treating CVD in women. Where can I find this documented? I'm compiling some references and would like to see what the AHA has recntly stated. I found a summary article released by Cleveland Clinic which is interesting but falls short of linking the benefits of HRT on cardiovascular health. Thanks!

I've been in birth control pills since I was 18 years old (now I'm 45), I never experienced side effects or any trouble, but with the second dose of the covid vaccine I started to have circulatory problems, my AR got so much worse and because different especialists were saying that birth control pills were the cause for clogged arteries and problems with the vaccine I stoped it (without any medical supervision) I have to say, I really felt terrrible, I couldn't sleep, I got so swollen and have so much pain, my hair fell down, my face sag, I got terrible hot flashes... After nine months my ob put me again in hormonal replacement (estradiol valerate-dienogest) and now I feel like a normal person again, I do strength training 3 to 4 times a week, I can sleep, I don't have hot flashes or any other pre menopausal symptom, so I am so grateful for my pills and always will speak in favor of hormonal replacement, thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise in this field, thank you both❤

I wasn’t happy with with my NP told me yesterday of my perimenopause symptoms that I was experiencing so I hope to soon make an appointment with an available practitioner at Dr Mary Claire Haver’s wellness clinic soon since it’s only 45 mins away! Frozen shoulders, bone/joint pains throughout body, ringing in ear, trouble sleeping, hot flashes, etc are not normal! Just because I’m 45 with pretty regular cycles doesn’t automatically rule me out with having perimenopause related symptoms and don’t tell me it’s because I’m aging. BS! Despite knee and shoulder pains, I still try to get at least 3 days of resistance training in as well as hopping into a group class. Sorry, just venting after my appt yesterday. ❤

Unless she is experiencing any issues, we should not be forced to go through the exam and hassle just to get what we already know is working! So, with oral estrogen, once it gets digested & goes through the liver, clotting factors are initiated- she mentions that towards the beginning. Anyway, you would need alternative delivery methods (& me too 😊)

I’m 7 years post menopause and finally decided to get on HRT! I was on a pill form of progesterone and a pill of estrogen but I don’t like taking pills so she put me on a cream and within a few weeks I started spotting heavily and had ovary pressure/heaviness. That cream had 30 GM C E2 (1.5 mg) and PROG (160 mg)/GM ANHYDR
She lowered the dose to 1 mg and 150mg .
My question is whether you think this is a good way to go or should I try a patch? The dr says the patch is not a good way to go!

P.S. The best way to treat UTIs is with vaginal Estradiol cream. Look up all the things it helps with for Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM) issues, which used to be called vaginal atrophy.

Great podcast. It’s scary knowing that hormones play a huge roll in men and woman. I’ve been on HRT since 35. I’m 45 now and the HRT stopped working for me. The estrogen helped with hot flashes at 42 when I started and I was doing muscle injection for testosterone as of last year. But the progesterone stopped working for me. The dr would up my meds and my anxiety was so bad. I think it spiked cortisol up. I’ve been doing research on eating meats, high saturated fats help to start hormone function again. Because of the cholesterol . high cortisol or low cortisol can block any hormonal absorption if the body is stressed which Iwas from messing with my hormones. The doctors kept upping my medicine, and it would cause my cortisol to go up through the roof, and it just set me into a very bad place. I’m now learning how salts and iodine are important for thyroid function and balance of electrolytes. It’s been a rough two years but I’ve been eating animal based now for 4 months only eating two bananas a day so no high carbs. I do lift 4 days a week. I do feel better but I’m sure it’s going to take me a year to get my body balanced back out from all the HRT I was put on at 35. I think HRT is good for women who are going through menopause, but being on HRT at very young age, I would not recommend it. I started HRT, because I had very bad migraines around that time of the month, and the progesterone at that time was helping me amazingly, and I was on thyroid meds for hypothyroidism. I’m now off 30mg of thyroid meds. It just really messed with my anxiety to much. We think low fats are a good thing but our body needs the animal fats especially as we age. I ate moderate protein low fat higher carbs and this wrecked me! So I’m hoping I’m on a better path forward on healing my body from with in. 🙏

I checked out Drink LMNT and it has 1000 mg of sodium! I minimize sodium when I can because so many foods have sodium. Too much sodium is not good for the heart, people with high blood pressure, and it adds to water retention when using creatine. To each his own.

What about the zillions of women on estrogen blockers for cancer? The way the body takes in and uses estrogen is confusing to me. I refused the estrogen blockers.

Hi Sara , I have had breast cancer too with a right mastectomy and the post chemo regimine included aromatase inhibitors with the goal of bringing your estrogen to zero. I declined for multiple reasons: I already had osteoporosis, already had joint pain and was concerned about the potentially increased risk of heart attack and about further cognitive decline ( I had memory loss from chemo). My oncologist was concerned because my cancer was estrogen positive but he could not deny the potential side effects. It has been more than two years since my surgery and multiple diagnostic imaging shows no spread of cancer. My second round of Reclast for my bones has triggered nasty joint pain.

Again, the doctors have failed women!!! God created women to have estrogen!!! There is NO STUDY that proves estrogen causes cancer!!! The WHI screwed women. Educate yourself by watching Menopause Taylor on RUclips. She is THE leading expert on HRT and peri-menopause and post-menopause. She explains things in EVEN GREATER DETAIL than here.

Please advise what is the daily dosage of testosteron is safe for a woman? My gyn prescribed me this medication , 1% Androgel, but said to put only small pea- like amount. No significant change in libido after 6 month of usage :(. Should I use more ? And where should I apply it for best results? Thank you!

unless you have a serious medical condition that prevents you from taking estrogen; you should absolutely find a new doctor who understands menopause. Estrogen is the fountain of youth!

What about taking Prometrium vaginally? I was told by my doctor I could do this instead of taking micronized progesterone orally due to intolerable side effects. This approach is helping me.
