I'm a CGI artist so naturally I like CGI. But I'm so glad that they are filming a lot of this with real cameras in REAL planes. Definitely the right thing to do. You have the lighting, the camera artefacts, the light spill and bloom, the motion blur, the natural reaction of the actors to the G-forces. It's just going to look so much better than if they were to greenscreen the pilots and put CG planes and backgrounds in. Excited!!

Most air combat will be close to being within visual range as adversaries will negate each other over long distances. The Russians are already coming up with stealth countermeasures with various new radars.

Top gun was the movie that put the NAVY for me on the radar, seeing the 18s take off from the carrier, and seeing the tomcat at the end brought back many good memories.

Yes and no. Tom loves to do his own stunts, and he is fully capable of flying a private plane - but some of the fighter jets in the Top Gun sequel can only be piloted by aviators with military experience.
In 2018, Paramount confirmed (via Fighter Jets World) that while Tom does fly "certain aircraft" in Top Gun: Maverick, he will not be flying the F/A-18 fighter jets. That's what editing and CGI are for!
I figured they put him in the back of a two seater trainer jet and filmed to look like he was piloting, that’s why the carrier takeoff looks soooo real.
He didn't fly the F18's. He's riding in the back seat in these shots.

I liked parts of the original. This looks great, but the shots look so amazing, those alone will be worth seeing in IMAX. I hope they shot for it.
He's been a licensed pilot for many years, so I would not be surprised if he can fly any type of jets, by the mere fact that he has a learning disability (dyslexia) but this problem didn't stop him from achieving his goals

I love seeing the Tomcat at the end with the swept back wings. It looks glorious. I'm glad they have him flying the super hornet in this movie and not say a Raptor. The hornet visually is the right choice.

ok so um the raptor cant land on a carrier it isn't strong enough nor does it have the required Cable Hook to land. the F-22 program was scrapped in 2012 as it was way to expensive and was not very functional as fighting other aircraft hasn't happened since the gulf war and even then we absolutely smashed them to bits with the F-15, which has a kill to downed ratio 152-0. ther were reports of the engine not starting if the temperature was too hot and vice versa in cold environments
oh and not to be an aircraft nerd the aircraft Tom cruise is seen in is an F/A-18 E model super Hornet
