hey kathryn, thanks for another video and your assistant. I myself have been put off making video's seeing how perfect other youtubers growstaces are compared to mine so yeah a bit of mess is great to see even though your area is pretty perfect if you ask me. I couldn't keep on top of all you two have going on in your yard. I use 70% alcohol to sterilize my tools, luckily my collection is so small I can leave tools to sit and only do one plant at a time. I hope that leaving tools to dry for several days kills off all diseases too... I read human viruses can stay alive on surfaces for up to 9 days so I presume it should be similar for plant viruses. I probably have spread things through bad practices in the past but I'm just a small hobby grower, I've never really noticed a detrimental effect just using alcohol on my tools. But then I've never really spotted a virus on any of my plants.
Some plants just don't want to grow for whatever reason and they usually eventually end up in the bin anyway. The biggest problem I have is pests, thrips will cause flowers to develop color breaks too I suspect. So many times people on online forums will ask "what is wrong with my orchid?" and 99% of the time it will be bug related. Personally I doubt it ever is virus related but rarely will people say yeah that is insect damage, everything is always virus related... I think it gets blamed far more than it should. If people were as good at keeping the bugs away as they take care to sterilize their tools then nobody would ever ask "what is wrong with my orchid?" ever again. But that is just my opinion.
I am keen to see an update to your beneficial bug experiment. Lovely collection as always. Have a good week.

Thank you so much for watching, Tom! I always get excited when I see that you've reached out. We have a saying in our family that I hope will encourage you--"You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great". I can guarantee you would have a secured viewer and subscriber in us if you started making videos. Thank you for always providing such wonderful perspective and scope on various orchid topics. You ask all the right questions. The cost of growing orchids outdoors is higher pest issue and it's the grower's personal responsibility to stay on top of it. Working in this industry in a professional level has helped us tremendously in diagnosing what's truly wrong with plants. We'll have an update video for you soon on the predatory mites experiment! It's good news. Have a wonderful week, friend!

Thx for another wonderful & informative video. I use a mini blow torch, do you think that’s good enough? I agree the quality of the tool is so important.

You guys have so many beautiful orchids. Any suggestions on where to find Encyclia tampensis? Palmer’s website had the alba but didn't see any regular ones.

Thank you so much for watching! Palmer Orchids has them onsite at the nursery. If you are looking to have them shipped to you, they have a Custom Order form on their website where you can request plants and enter your information.
