I have a 2007 Nissan Versa hatchback. Defroster button never worked since I bought this car. I followed the instructions and it worked immediately. I am amazed. What I also learned was the two knob buttons would not come out, so I grabbed it by the center with a needle-nose pliers and pulled out one at the time. The plastic bag was important as the pieces are so small and fell inside of it. Easy to see. I had to bent the retainer clip to remove it, then straighten it using a magnifier glass back before re-installing. I recommend doing one side at the time, so you can look at the position of the other clip during the reinstall. This stuff is very small... you need good eyes to do this work, or a magnifier glass like I needed, but overall took me 20 minutes. Thank you.

Just in case this information helps anyone: There is absolutely no need to remove the black plastic rear defroster button or the a/c button when removing the climate control face plate. Those 2 buttons will simply stay with the face plate after you shimmy the (4) retaining clips up/outward to remove the face plate. Also, do yourself a HUGE favor and don't attempt this task without first obtaining a good pair of tweezers! After I cleaned the dark/black 'contact' (inside the light blue rubber 'button') the first time, my rear defroster STILL did not work. So, I tried cleaning the contact again until finally I started to get black residue on the cotton swab. If you find you are not getting any black residue, you more than likely will find that the contact is not cleaned enough yet, and therefore will not be able to close/complete the electrical signal on the circuit board. (all this contact button is doing is jumping a signal across 2 solder points on the circuit board) I satisfied my curiosity (if the rear defrosted even "worked" anymore) by taking a very small flat-head screwdriver and using it to momentarily bridge the 2 solder points on the circuit board (below where the contact button would normally rest), and watched the indicator light turn on and then off again, every time I bridged the 2 solder points. Just for good measure, I cleaned the contact for a 3rd time, and noticed even a little more black residue on the cotton swab. At this point, I wasn't getting anymore black residue so I put the blue button back in. I was finally able to see the orange indicator light illuminating as I pushed on the rubber contact/button with the wooden handle (opposite of the cotton head) of the type of cotton swab I was using. I was pretty happy now because having a properly functioning rear defroster is a necessity for 4 to 6 months out of the year in the area where I live. This was less than 10-15 button pushes ago, and I am already noticing that the button needs to be pushed a little harder every time I try to activate the rear defroster. I came across a post somewhere online that mentioned that these type of contacts (when new) have a thin coating on them which allows them to be more effective in bridging/completing an electrical current/signal. Once that coating wears off (or is removed), the contact surface is far less capable of completing this task. I'm sorry to seem so "pessimistic", but I wanted to at least offer what I've learned after doing this procedure. I do hope that I am wrong, but I have a bad feeling that the procedure shown here might prove to only be a (very) temporary fix(?)

It definitely helped someone like me to even attempt to do this, and I'm sure it has helped many people as a reference to perform this task. I rarely drive my Nissan anymore, but the last time I checked the defroster button still did work in allowing me to turn the rear defroster off/on. It does take a little more (pushing) effort than I would like, but thankfully it does still work. If I do have to tackle this procedure again, I have since picked up a product called "Keypad Fix" that I plan to apply to the back of the button this time around. It claims to be a "permanent" fix for this type of problem, so we shall see when the time comes. Two downfalls are that the product is a little costly for a .03 oz container (IMO), and a person will need to allow the product to cure "overnight" before using again. Thanks again @ruthlessluder for providing this video to help the rest of us out.
Great video, worked like a charm. A quick point to remember is that there is a carbon puck inside the elastomeric dome and this is the switch contact, so don’t clean too hard!
Thank you sooooo much! My A/C button still worked so I thought maybe it was the leak at the top of the hatchback causing some sort of wiring issue and was gonna take it to a shop to start there. I was ale to do this in 20 minutes and get it fixed for free. (used 70% rubbing alcohol I already had in house) Now I just gotta get the airbag light off and new brakes(or whatever is causing a shake when I slow down) and i'll be good.
Note, while this is a simple job in concept, it is not easy in practice. Trim removal was easy and straightforward. But the button removal is difficult. These are very tiny parts in a tight space that fly around when you try and remove them. I definitely recommend getting high quality tweezers, the cheap ones you get in kits just wont do. That and having steady hands and patience. I lost most pieces numerous times, and the blue rubber piece was never to be found again. After about an hour or more, I gave up on trying to fix it, and just put it back together. I tried cleaning without removing the button pieces on the other one, and no surprise it didnt work
Thank you, this solution works perfectly, one of the little rubbers was broke, so hay put a little piece of aluminum foil to be sure it make contact, works perfectly.
I had the same symptoms with both buttons and gave this fix a go. All went well until the blue rubber cap on the AC button fell apart with the tip breaking away while cleaning it. Without this the switch will not work. Now the AC is on all the time, which is better then not working at all I suppose. Be gentle cleaning the rubber caps; they are fragile. Otherwise, it was a great success as we use the rear window defog a lot here in Canada! FYI, the Nissan dealer will only replace the whole module (all three rotary switches, the recirculate slider and the two buttons). 3 hrs labour and $400 for the part, yikes!
Thanks. You have the simplest easiest fix by far. I have an '09 Versa base model with no factory A/C but the defrost button won't work. I just acquired an '09 versa with A/C where the defrost button won't work and the A/C button won't turn off. I bought a new switch control unit like the one in your video but haven't installed it yet. Some of the other fixes I've researched involves pulling the unit and soldering on wires and auxiliary momentary switches.

Excellent video that solved both problems on my 2007 Versa ! Rear window defrost button did not work , and AC would stay on regardless of settings for defrost , heat only etc if fan was running. Both working properly now. One other thought as to why those switches fail may be that the cabon rod under the blue rubber cap has to make good contact with the two blades on the control board simultaneously when it's depressed. Each of those blades has a tiny raised " nubbin " dead center that may wear a corresponding divot into the bottom of the carbon rod after repeated use. Similar to how the carbon brushes on electrical motors wear down eventually to the point they can't maintain consistent contact against the commutator. Your drill or saw starts running erratically, maybe sparks a bit and eventually quits running. If that's the case then maybe the simple act of removing the blue rubber cap with carbon rod and reinstalling it in a differet orientation would give the carbon rod a new " flat section to contact those round nubbins on the control board. Of course I didn't think about that possibility till I had everything reassembled so can't confirm if there were any worn spots on the end of the carbon rod. Still thanks again for a great video that saved me a bunch of $ and hassle.
Bro, thanks! This is the best solution. The other method, swapping out the HVAC manuel controller unit , is lots of trouble. Incredibly difficult to unhook cables that sit very deep and narrow spaces.

i just did it today for 2011 Nissan Versa and did not clean it at all, if you look on the bottom of the defogger switch, there is a small whole, i just got a very small screw with small head and screwed it in that whole and it worked like a charm.

I cleaned the one and replaced the other little rubber nub. The one I cleaned is now stuck on (AC) and the one I replaced (defrost) doesn't work anymore. Any thoughts?

Great video!! You saved me lots of $$$ BUT WARNING!! This guy makes it look much easier than it is. Removing the panels and putting them back is not a problem, as per the video. But once you get down to the TINY switches, there is a reason he has a white bag underneath. The metal clip is not easy to remove, the black clip underneath loves to fall and flies off. Putting those back are a challenge, especially if you have bigger fingers. Doable but difficult. I managed to get mine done but dropped the small pieces X amount of times!! Believe me when I say the small black cap is difficult to find in a black interior car...! Just saying... I don't recommended attempting this in sub-zero temperatures.
Might be a to super glue a chunk of plastic or cardboard to the top of the rubber piece, to use as a spacer if you absolutely cannot find the piece. Just be cautious and use the glue sparingly.
I hate to ask obvious, but if you lose the retaining clip and or the blue button or the little black plastic thing that the retaining clip of up to how do you order those parts? Does anybody have a leak where I can go to to buy those parts?
I have the same problem with my tidda 2012 and I need to press the AC button hard to make it start but still the light on AC button not turning ON, do you think if I do your way the button light will get fixed as well ?
My defrost and ac were unresponsive after dead battery. Charged battery at 10amps, used start function too early. Car battery jumped twice. Finished with two amp charge later. During all this and doing everything in the video, defrost and ac still not responsive. I went with this video cause my ac was hard to turn on or off. The ac electrostatic cup was deformed/bent. Would not return to original form. But even shorting across contacts with small screwdriver did not work. I’ve checked the interior driver side fuse and row of fuses by the battery under the hood. WHAT HAVE I MISSED?

Ni, is not the motor Air blower, it's something called resistance blower module, it's about $15, I'm at work right now, but tomorrow I'll walk you through it.
How the heck did you put it back together? Every time ii try to put the little blue rubber piece back, it springs off. The one or two times I got it to stay, the black plastic cover knocked it off. I have been driving around for 6 months with The whole thing off. But thanks for the tip. It may work but I wouldn’t know until I can replace the panel
With a good pair of tweezers you should be able to put the blue cap back on. You might need another pair of tweezers (or just a thin stick) to hold the blue cap in place while you put the black piece and metal retaining clip back on. Takes patience for sure. I almost lost my blue cap but luckily I found it.
@@ruthlessluder I used tweezers and lost all of the small parts at one point but found them all. They bounce all over the place when they pop out. I guess I could try again but I really spent hours before and I cannot get anywhere. If I get the blue rubber to stick, should the black piece of plastic snap in or could that easily fall out once I let go?
@@trusso11783 You need to make sure you bend the metal retaining clip back to its original shape first. Everything is held together by the metal retaining clip...

Does it work if you press the button really hard? The solution I showed here will only work if the issue is caused by poor contact. There can be many other reasons why a button doesn't work unfortunately. Good luck.

I used alcohol swab instead of WD40. You can also use your perfume or bidy spray which usually have small % of alcohol. That should do as well. Cheers

Sounds like your blower fan is faulty, it's buried under the center consol but not extremely difficult to swap out. Amazon has replacements.

The problem I had was a contact issue. Once the button contact was cleaned, the A/C button worked. It had nothing to do with the compressor.

How the heck did you put it back together? Every time ii try to put the little blue rubber piece back, it springs off. The one or two times I got it to stay, the black plastic cover knocked it off. I have been driving around for 6 months with The whole thing off. But thanks for the tip. It may work but I wouldn’t know until I can replace the panel
With a good pair of tweezers you should be able to put the blue cap back on. You might need another pair of tweezers (or just a thin stick) to hold the blue cap in place while you put the black piece and metal retaining clip back on. Takes patience for sure. I almost lost my blue cap but luckily I found it.
@@ruthlessluder I used tweezers and lost all of the small parts at one point but found them all. They bounce all over the place when they pop out. I guess I could try again but I really spent hours before and I cannot get anywhere. If I get the blue rubber to stick, should the black piece of plastic snap in or could that easily fall out once I let go?
@@trusso11783 You need to make sure you bend the metal retaining clip back to its original shape first. Everything is held together by the metal retaining clip...

Spent 2hrs dropping, finding parts, cleaning. Did no good. Don't recommend .waste of time. He spent 8 hours dropping, finding parts, filming for this.
Hey I have the same problem but with a 2013 ram 1500 and the ac buttons don’t work,I already bought the same part and replaced it but it still didn’t work how do you think I can fix this issue I already saw the fuses but none where blown and I already saw a mechanic and nothing still,I don’t know how to fix it do you know any solution for this?
Does it work if you press the button really hard? The solution I showed here will only work if the issue is caused by poor contact. There can be many other reasons why a button doesn't work unfortunately. Good luck.
