This is very timely as I am currently installing a fence with 3 gates. I am placing chain link gates mounted on wood posts. What size bit would you use to make a pilot hole for a 1/2” x 4” screw hook? It was also suggested I put oil on the screw to make it easier to screw into the 4” x 4” post. Thoughts on that?

I used a 1 3/8 forsner bit. But a spade bit would work.

A 3/8 drill bit would work but only drill it 3 inches deep. Oil is good but small amount of soap works best.
