Now that I'm older, I realize that my parents spent hard earned money so that I could have a great Christmas. I am so very grateful to them, and I wish that they were still here so I could tell them how thankful I am. I'm sure that when I was the little kid getting all/some of those great things that I probably still had something to complain about.

64 here and completely agree. My mother would scour garage sales for extra Hot Wheel track [it was expensive] and we eventually had a enough track to cover the backyard well. They worked great with Sizzler cars too. Creepy Crawlers were great too. My dad would melt fishing sinkers and poor lead into the molds. Toys back to my eyes were more engaging on many levels.

My recollection is that the mid-1960s was when all the boys put their electric trains into the closet and switched to slot cars. Most of my friends had either 1/32 scale Eldon or HO scale Aurora sets but I had a 1/32 scale Strombecker set. Outside of perhaps a Schwinn Stingray, a slot car set was probably the most requested gift on a boy's Christmas list at the time. The GI Joe was about the size of a Barbie. My dad didn't want to get me one because he didn't want me to "play with dolls."

Same here. My dad was a Marine so he was always gone. My mom bought me GI Joe from the Goodwill and I absolutely loved it. I would play with the neighbor boy who had 3 GI Joes and the huge wire remote tank. We won every war. One day my mom's friend visited and she told me very meanly that I was playing with a "dolly'. Welp!, that was it for me. That was 1972, I was 9.

I loved Spirograph and Etch a Sketch for my artistic side, my sister had the flower, and such plastic making set. I remember spending many hours at the backyard sandbox with a friend. We would divide the toy soldiers evenly, then sculpt the sand into bunkers, trenches and foxholes. We would then take turns throwing a relatively heavy ball, like a golf ball, with the goal of burying the soldiers. Once covered they were considered dead. Those games could take a loooong time.
My favorite thing was slotcars. I got my first race set in 1962 ( 10yrs old ) and it's a hobby I still enjoy today. I have a collection of over 200 1/32 scale cars and over 300 HO scale cars. My current track is 1/32 Scalextric set up on an 8 foot by 12 foot table.

I think Matell made a series of Spy toys in the early 60s inspired by the new (at that time) James Bond character and movies. A transistor radio that opened up into a Lugar type pistol, a larger portable radio that opened up into a rifle, a briefcase that had a pistol on the inside and would shoot out of a hole in the side, Six Finger, a spring loaded fake finger that would shoot a dart, and I had them all! I was quite deadly.

My older brother was a child in the 1960s.
He had a few GI Joe, and there was on with mustache and short beard, and a scar on his cheek.
I was yet a toddler and I liked that one!
He and older sister had also an Etch-a-Sketch.
That’s a great toy, and we all used it plenty. This original is still at my parent’s house.
Many children and grandchildren all have played with that.
Toys seem to have been quite sturdy back then.

I remember every single toy on this list. I ate everything my younger sister baked in her Easy Bake oven and when she wasn't around I'd bake a few things for myself. My favorite toy on the list was my G.I. Joe. Sometimes Barbie was G.I. Joe's girlfriend (When there was nobody else to play with but my little sister).
But what I remember best were all the "war toys" we had to play with in the early Sixties. We lived in a developing community on Long Island, NY and there were still plenty of open space and "woods" to play "Army" in. Movies like "The Longest Day" and tv shows like "Combat!" helped to fuel our "war-lust" and toy makers were glad to provide us with an armory of toy weaponry. Realistic looking stuff too! Military pistols, rifles, machine guns, grenades, helmets, uniforms and lots of other military stuff. I used to love to play army with my friends and we liked to dig "fox holes" lots of them, in nearby open fields. Grown ups were afraid of walking their dogs in these fields as we had them cleverly camouflaged. It was a lot of fun being a kid in the early Sixties!
The Vietnam War changed that and by the Seventies war toys became very unpopular and toy manufacturers stopped making them.
