I love how this show kept the focus on the competition happening here and now. The interviews are just short bits about trying hard and persevering. We don't have to sit through 10 minutes of pre-recorded backstory about how each contestant is overcoming a disability of some kind, fighting for their family with medical problems, or what they're doing to inspire their community. I tried out for the 2006 version of American Gladiators and did well enough in the physical tests, but maybe my backstory at the time wasn't tragic enough to get picked for the show. 😅
And the best part: no trash talking or flashy entrances from the Gladiators. This is suppoed to be a real sports competition, not sports entertainment like professional wrestling.
This show is lame, fake, and staged just like professional wrestling. All the outcomes are known before the show starts. so ya not very genuine or competitive LOL
They are, in the UK. If it is successful, as I certainly hope it will be, maybe they'll bring it back in the USA too. It'll be nice to have a repeat of the International Gladiators competition that happened in the 90s that introduced the UK to Two Scoops.

To this day I still want to run the "Assault" tennis ball gun and try to make it through the course/gauntlet. I dreamed about doing that since I was a wee lad.
What i found most fascinating about this show is that they would find competitors, who themselves were often accomplished athletes, to go up against the american gladiators who would dwarf them. I once had a co-worker who appeared on this show back in its heyday. And even though he was older than me, he was still jacked and one of the most physically fit people i ever knew. Also, the 2008 revival of American Gladiators coincided with the Nintendo Wii's dominance. Why did it never get a motion-controlled American Gladiators game? 8. I see that the gladiators are allowed to tackle and hold again in Powerball. Banning that from the quarterfinals on in season 1B was so stupid. 9. Rest in Peace to Thunder (AKA Billy Smith). Was he picked out because he looked like Malibu but was also competent at his job? 10. Lace lost her skirt but Gold didn't. Also, I can't confirm this yet, but I think Ice is the only gladiator on this show to wear a bikini in every season she was in even through multiple costume changes. 11. In season 1B, Bob McElwee wore a sport coat as a referee. Larry Thompson takes over as the ref in a more traditional ref outfit and will stay on until the show ends. He'll also likely have that sense of fashion until the show ends. 12. After not competiting in Joust a single time in season 1B, Laser is the first to compete in Joust in season 2. 13. It was Richard Seymour that pioneered the Roll-a-Dope. Also, the pistol has a bit better ammunition this season. 15. My god! Both of the male contenders scaled the wall in 34 seconds at most! 16. Why do the women have a less difficult wall than the men this season? 17. I see that there are only two swings be contender in Human Cannonball rather than three. 18. Now we get Atlasphere's debut and this event doesn't have those downward ramps that gives contenders a rolling start yet. Also, the sphere needs to stay in a scoring pod instead of simply rolling over it as it will later. 19. If you think Gemini gets angry, you should've seen Titan in season 1B. After Elden Kidd committed a foul in the Semifinal of Human Cannonball, Titan got so angry, he chased Bob McElwee through the stands (it was edited out of the official broadcast, Dan "Nitro" Clark told us these events). That's why he got fired from the show. 20. The Eliminator in season two introduced four iconic elements to this show. The travellator (AKA reverse treadmill), handbike, cargo net, and zipline. Sad to see Mike Adamle here, knowing what we now know about him. A few years ago, he was forced to retire from public life due to the worsening effects of dementia brought on by concussions during his playing career in the NFL, as well as epileptic seizures after his football career ended, again, stemming from the hits he absorbed. He can no longer work or drive and must keep a fanny pack with his identification, keys, and cellphone on his person at all times in case he gets lost.
I have a friend who had TBI from her time in the Army and she relates to me that she had to have a sign around her neck with her name and unit information in case she got lost (if I recall, it was post-brain surgery, which has to be a scary as hell kind of thing...)
Born and raised in the UK so I’m far more familiar with our version of Gladiators. It’s fascinating to see the US version especially the early ones as you can see how we got a fairly optimised version in the end. Great to see older shoes preserved and that the master tape is in great shape as older shows always look rough as the tapes are dupes or worn out, American shows suffer more I’ve noticed which I’m guessing it’s to do with NTSC resolution. It would be amazing to see the rest of Season 1 and the pilot if the tape still exists in full.
Gosh this brings back so many memories watching this with my parents when I was a kid and like someone else saying thinking everybody on the show was a superhero lol
In Powerball, you can clearly see that mad contender, Trish, physically pushed Lace aside 8:05 even though Trish didn't have the powerball with her. Trish should've been disqualified right then and there. And in the Joust, Trish really didn't have to push Diamond off 14:36 her pedestal since Diamond already crossed over to hers, that was unnecessary.
American Gladiators was the height of Fly 90s cheese. Laser was indeed All That And A Bag Of Chips and this show was truly Da Bomb. Talk To The Hand (Cause The Face Don’t Understand) if you think otherwise.✋ Booyah!

I have a friend who had TBI from her time in the Army and she relates to me that she had to have a sign around her neck with her name and unit information in case she got lost (if I recall, it was post-brain surgery, which has to be a scary as hell kind of thing...)
@@misstee101 sorry to hear about Mike. I remember him from both series of International gladiators
DAMN!
@@peterwilliamskelhorn6675 I remember him not only from THIS show, but his short run in WWE in 2008.
Rico vs. UK Gladiator Shadow on Duel/Joust would've been epic!!!!
I used to love this show. I missed the documentary that just came out on it. Hopefully i can catch a replay
R.I.P. Billy Smith.
A/K/A Thunder ⛈ ♥ 😍 👌 💙 ❤.
My brother used to say, "Gladiators ready??? Regular people ready???"
😂😂😂
Trish and Sheila were fun to watch.
I'd love it of the whole series was on dvd.
Ahh, Rico the legend 💯👍
For a 10 yr old kid this was the best show
what an insane good concept of a TV show :O
This was the best thing ever on tv.
When television looked like shit but was fucking awesome!
Gosh this brings back so many memories watching this with my parents when I was a kid and like someone else saying thinking everybody on the show was a superhero lol
The 90s were so awesome.
Early 90s... my favorite sports game
Gemini was my all time favorite. My parents would let me stay up late once a week, just for this show, then instantly to bed haha
A few years ago Pluto TV had a dedicated channel to American Gladiators. I would watch it every morning while having breakfast before going to work. I dont know if they still have the channel.
No they do not
I'mnow watching all the shows I missed. This was always my plan. Took 3 decades to realize it, never had any time before. And passi g on to my kids. Greatest TV show ever, 80s and 90s ALL the way!
What I liked is that it was a fair athletic competition and not too gimmicky. It was about the athleticism, not going on and on about someone's backstory. Just action and no real filler.
That theme music just gets me every time.
I'm 90% here for the "assault" round LAWL XD
ESPN Classic
This show SLAPPED!
They need to bring this back.
Does anyone else go "BRVVRRVVRRBBBBVVRRVVRRVVRRVV" to those fast synth drums at 0:58 min?
That's been stuck in my head today.
I'm missing my vintage commercials.
This is My Favorite Season
Loved the show as a kid....
Use me as a Netflix brought me here button
RIP Tonya 'GOLD' Knight!!
R.I.P. to GOLD and THUNDER
Omg I was just a little boy watching this in the 90s. Here I am 38 years in 2024. 😂😂😂😂
So much better without all the commercials!!! Loved watching this in the 80's. A little cheesy now but still fun
