To my knowledge, this was the only episode of American Gladiators that had THREE contenders going down due to injury--you had Alice going down in Powerball (the very first event), you had Harvey pulling out after the Assault, and then you had Harvey's replacement, Rick, having to pull out right before the Eliminator. This was also the only time, to my knowledge, that a Powerball match was cut short due to a contender injury. If there was an injury during the event in later episodes, they would simply bring the alternate contender in and resume the event from the time of the initial stoppage.
To that very day, it's the only time three contenders ended up withdrawing due to injury. Plus, that was the only time a contender ran the Eliminator solo, though I think he didn't gain any points but just for fun.
@@chrysrhykyscalhoun9812 Actually, there were two times this season there was a solo Eliminator run (the other being the third preliminary of the first half). Both times they still scored the Eliminator run for seeding purposes.
I remember seeing this on USA Network in 94, and i was shocked that (1) you had Alice Wilcox, a childcare worker from Mentor, Ohio going down, then (2) you had Harvey McClesky, a retail executive assistant from Columbus, Ohio also going down and (3) you had Harvey's replacement, Rick, having to pull out right before the Eliminator. In all the years i watched the show that's the only time that happened.
Another one for the "strangest injuries ever" category in reference to Rick. I still wonder how, exactly. STAT CHECK (add this to what Tubewings has already said): First time a contender falls to injury during the first event, and first time that an alternate won a competition. Also, a weird memory. Back when AG was first run, I remember this being the third preliminary episode, not the first. Somewhere in reruns, this and the episode with Lance & Dayna Duke got swapped. *shrug*
I can only remember four shows that were inspired by/knock-offs of American Gladiators. 1. Knights & Warriors (Basically AG meets Medieval Times.) 2. Blade Warriors (AG on Rollerblade in-line skates.) 3. Battle Dome (Two of the BD Warriors starred on the 2008 reboot of AG, and then there's Terry Crews.) 4. Ultimate Tag (The name says it all.)
25:15 Turbo 👍 27:45 Gold 😖 And finally comes Hang Though to AG, one of the show's iconic competitions, along with The Joust, The Assault, Powerball, The Wall and Atlasphere (my favorite). I have the impression that Hang Though ended the continuity of some gladiators in next seasons, like Gold, who did awful in this chapter 😖 Lace and Blaze never competed here, so they must have never been good in hoops. In the men's case, Thunder and Gemini competed once or twice, but did just as poorly as Gold. In this first season with Hang Though only Turbo, Ice and Diamond shined. Laser and Nitro only made it so-so. 😐
25:15 There was an "Alumni show"?! Any chance y'all could upload that at some point? Glad to see Hang Tough at last! I got so used to seeing it in UK Gladiators that it was kind of weird that it took so long to show up.
The Alumni Show will appear at the end of the season, after the Grand Championship, though based on Mike's comments, it was meant to air at the very start of the season.
In the original first run, the alumni show aired as the season premiere. In reruns since, it's been placed at the end of the season. Not sure why. When we get there, it'll be Aimee Ross vs. Cheryl Ann Silich and Terry Moore vs. Lucian Anderson.
@@SapinskiMath I'm guessing it was because both the Grand Championship and the Alumni Show were taped on the same day. If you look closely during the Grand Championship Powerball, you can see all four alumni in the background. Also, near end of the Alumni show, after the Eliminator, you can see RIco Constantino chatting with someone in the background.
@@Tubewings I'll have to look out for that, never noticed before. (Then again, I also never caught the swear someone else here did before until they said it, I got a good laugh.)
You should better write Blaze is the Woman to Beat, I mean this shot at 19:17 was amazing, probably the Best Shot I have seen in the Assault even the Contender was really impressed by the Gorgeous One.
Were the contenders drunk on assault? None of them got near and blaze especially gave them time. Gold has also been hitting up the bar before hang tough
8:23 That's like the kind of thing that'd happen to me, getting injured at the start of the competition, like once when casually playing volleyball at college, and I destroyed my hand with my first touch of the ball. :(
Really weird that laceration in the atlasphere. Must have been part of the cage poking in on the inside or possibly a weld that wasn’t ground down enough. You could see a wet spot on his butt as he got out which I assume was blood soaking through the shorts. And the woman trainer behind him holding the sphere looked a little shocked.
24:54 If that was me, I'd be hoping there was a door or something up there, with stairs, or a gentle slope leading back down to the arena floor!!!!! :(
That second round of Joust was bullshit. Both opponents are supposed to have their q-tip weapons up, not pointed at their opponent. Gemini was pointing right at the dude!!
Poor Gold, she is by far the worst female gladiator, she's in great shape but it just seemed like she had so little on-camera charisma and the show knew it.
