    Loved the undercurrent of virtue ethics in this episode! That may be a new concept for some listeners--a good starting point (though it takes some work to wade through!) is Alasdair MacIntyre's book After Virtue.

    Research Aristotle’s “Golden Mean”. In short, the golden mean is a philosophical concept that emphasizes finding the appropriate medium, or middle ground, between two extremes. It’s a great explanation of where a virtue might fall in line between two vices (the excess vs the deficiency). i.e. if courage is the virtue (the “Mean), then recklessness is the “excess” and cowardice is the “deficiency”.

    Also my hubs sisters are 9 and 10 years older than him, so his nephew who he’s close to, and feel like not that far apart in age, he’s his uncle haha. It’s weird when he calls me Aunt too. But fun!! So I get it. 😜

    Is a vice a stumbling block

  • @RCGWho
    @RCGWho 3 дня назад +2

    51:00 You either listen to and allow cussing or you don't. You either smoke and drink and teach it to your children or you don't. You either read trashy books or you don't. You either listen to trashy secular music or you don't. Don't expect to have a double standard and be a hypocrite and expect it to go well with your children. You're children will take your double standard and justified vices and run with them.

    Really odd to use "reading the Word" as an example of a vice.
    And who do you know that does this? That's an almost imaginary problem.
    The vibe so far at 12:00 is of a hipster influenced by emergent culture who watches a lot of Pints with Aquinas and wants to justify smoking cigars and pipes and having a large collection of fancy bourbon and probably a bunch of tats.
    Oh, and also cussing because Pints with Aquinas is like Joe Rogan for Catholics.
    Am I wrong?
    So, vice here is having questionable habits that make you culturally relevant and hip.
    Hip=Pride
    Big vice.
    I'm halfway through and it's still pretty vague what vices are being legitimized?
    Are we talking rated R movies with skin, secular music, cussing, bourbon, tats, smoking?
    The only vaguely touched on vices were excessive Bible reading, football, movies, and I think alcohol. But none of these were unpacked. Cussing was touched on and avoided.

      I am finding you and other commenters are now marginalizing and bullying me for not fangirling.
      I'm not 12, and I believe firmly in free speech.
      Try bullying tactics with someone else.
      If you'd like to discuss or debate a specific point, I'm down for that.

      Hello RGCWho, This is Uncle Wade. Nice to meet you! Sorry if I give off a hipster vibe. I honestly don't know if I am one, or if it would be bad if I was one, but from the tone of your comment I am pretty sure you don't like them.
      I admit that have watched exactly one episode of Pints with Aquinas and I really enjoyed the Aussie accent and thought provoking conversation. I have no desire whatsoever to justify smoking anything or cussing. Unfortunately, I already drank my fancy bourbon collection years ago, but thankfully God has delivered me from the vice of alcoholism and the accompanying headaches.
      I don't have any tattoos, and have no currrent plans of getting one, though I do have a close friend who has some and I still spend time with him. This is dangerous I know, but he hasn't mugged me yet. (Just teasing)
      If I thought I was hip that could absolutely become a point of pride for me, but fortunately I am quite unfamiliar with the modern milieu and enjoy my distance from it. I do have pride in my life, and it is a vice that I take seriously and want to grow out of continually. Praise Jesus for his power to save and sanctify! I need his grace in that and many other areas of life.
      I completely agree that reading the Word is not vice at all. It is not even an imaginary problem. Perhaps you cannot relate, but I have seen and experienced the use of good things for the intent of justifying the absense of something God is specifically calling me to do. This is like a parent telling a child to clean up his room but instead of obeying (because he doesn't feel like it) the child sits on the couch and whips out the Bible to justify sinful slothfulness and disobedience. Obviously neither sitting on a couch nor reading the Word are vices, but the slothfulness and disobedience are. If you have never seen or experienced that, then I applaud your lack of duplicity.
      You are absolutely correct in your observation that we were not deeply discussing specific activities, but rather the term vice itself and how to discern what would constitute a vice in the heart of a person. I really appreciate that you took the time to listen. It seems you found the discussion thought provoking.
      I hope you continue to seek and find the Truth. Have a fantastic Day!
      Cheers! (with water and certainly not bourbon)
      -Uncle Wade
      P.S. I would hate to watch an R rated movie without skin as that sounds horrifying! (Just teasing again)

      @@wadejohnson7962 I've been listening to emergent Christians justify their vices since about 2006. It's probably inadvisable to use the word vice and then dance around what exactly you're getting at.
      And coming on here with sarcasm and a mocking tone isn't helping.
      You say you like thought, but then don't like actual questions and push back. That is what thought is.
      Belittling me and then adding pleasantries?
      Do you listen to Douglas Wilson? You definitely give his vibe.

      An example of a vice (I really like the definition given in this podcast that refers to activities that keep us from doing what the Lord intends for us to do) could be listening to podcasts with a critical and judgmental attitude and perhaps a spirit of contempt? Perhaps this is more a distraction (a vice) than a help. Potentially, since the interest is clearly there, the podcast critic might refocus their energies towards their own online platform, and focus on helping ( as Katie and Elisha [and Wade] do) rather than breaking that which is good.
