  • In this video, I cover the details of how how to conduct and interpret the results of a One Way ANCOVA (Analysis of Covariance) using the General Linear Model (GLM) tool in SPSS. I show you how to include covariates in a standard ANOVA model (to make it an ANCOVA). I go over single and multiple covariates and give you a chance to try it yourself.

    Great video, thanks! I have the same issue as Wei Liu, I have 2 categorical covariates. I struggle to perform this in SPSS and interpret the output. A tutorial about this would be great, because it is nowhere explained on the internet! And another question: how do you test the assumptions for a ANCOVA with categorical covariates?

    Thanks for your video. It's really helpful. A question: do we need to test the assumptions of ANOVA/ANCOVA before running the test? Will the video cover this?

    Great video! Thanks. A question: can I make a graph using ANCOVA? I like to present the results by boxplot. Is that possible?

    Thanks for the vid. I’m wondering can covariates be categorical? For example sex, race, age group, income group, education etc. I’m conducting ANCOVA between a three-group independent variable and continuous dependent variable, trying to control several covariate which are not continuous. Can I still use ANCOVA? How to do this?

      You absolutely can....just include it as a fixed factor and change your model not to include an interaction between the covariate and the independent variable. If you have trouble with that, let me know and I'll consider making another video on the topic.

      @@DataDemystified Does it mean I put independent variable and covariates all into fixed factor(s) and leave covariate(s) blank? I just did. The sig. of independent viable is .000 and only 1 of 12 covariates sig. is

      @@drleoweii Hi Wei. That's pretty much correct. If you IV is significant in the presence of covariates, then you can say that the IV is a significant predictor even after allowing for the variation that is present in the covariates. That one of the IVs is significant simply means that that covariate ALSO predicts your DV. Really, what you call an IV and a covariate is irrelevant. You have a model with multiple predictors...some of which are significant predictors and some of which aren't. Calling one a "covariate" is more labeling than anything.

      @@DataDemystified Thank you this is very helpful. I have another statistic question not sure if you can illustrate it. I am interested in sense of community and wondering if that differs among 3 neighborhoods. I sent out the survey mailing ask them to evaluate sense of community using Likert scale. Since the data collection is undergoing in condition of pandemic. I kinda duplicate the instrument questions (1 set asks them to evaluate sense of community before the pandemic, this is kinda a retrospective approach; 2 set asks them to evaluate sense of community during the pandemic). I don't know if that fits panel data model or not. It looks like panel data but I can easily argue that this wasn't conducted in two times. it just asks opinions regarding two different times at a one time survey.

      @@drleoweii It's not panel data, but you can still analyze it as a repeated measure...just know that the retrospective measure will have all the failings of a memory based questions AND the "current" measure will almost certainly be biased due to people first answering the retrospective question.     I'm a bit confused. What does it mean when the F-value in ANCOVA becomes higher after adding covariates than before the covariate was entered? Does it mean the covariate is a suppressor which is only increasing the difference between the groups?

      If the F-value of the main independent variable increases in the presence of a covariate, you are right that the covariate is acting as a suppressor.

      Not sure what you're asking, but the data sets are from real people on Amazon Mechanical Turk. That is NOT a true representation of the American population, but it's not terrible either.
