I had my bilateral TKR done in a hurry in July 2023 & now wish I had been pre- warned about the risk of Infection coming from inside the body & that pre-antibiotics treatment before Surgery could have minimised the risk. The Orthopaedic Clinic didn't do thorough investigation into my history of Cellulitis & Eczema (despite being told) & 7 months post Surgery, ie, in Feb 2024, I had Partial Revision done in right knee from acute Streptococcus B infection, the same bacteria found in my Cellulitis. . There were complications from IV Antibiotics that required a hospital stay of 2 months & with Oral Antibiotics, I have just completed the standard protocol of 3 months for Acute infection. I was told it might recur & to have regular follow-up with the Ortho Surgeon. Some folks had to be on Antibiotics for 2 years Post Revision, even for life if the infection becomes chronic. I wish I had known all this before deciding to have the Bilateral TKR in the first place.
I had a TKR in my right knee in 2012. All has gone well. I had a UTI diagnosed by urine culture on 07/11/2024. I started taking Cipro and expected to get better. By 07/18/2024 I called an ambulance. The UTI had made me septic and I was in renal failure. I began to improve with the correct IV antibiotics. While I was in the hospital I noticed my right knee was painful and swollen. So they x-rayed the knee and there was a large effusion. I went to see my orthopedic surgeon on 08/23/2024 and I have to have a revision surgery and PICC Line for antibiotics. I don't have the surgery date yet
Hi I’m glad to hear for you. I need one but so very frightened. I’m scared of getting an infection, of it going wrong or complications. How can you bend it with all the staples in please? It must be so painful anyway, but to have to bend after surgery to rehabilitate. I can’t cope I don’t think…
@@judithcolbert7106 my knee bent very easy same day. Walked the next morning. Went home the third day. Coped all alone. Do your exercises regularly and you'll be fine.
I wish I had seen this 3 weeks ago. Three days after my six week post op appointment, where it was determined that all was good, and I was ahead of schedule, my knee started hurting more. It was more red and more swollen. But I waited a week because redness and swelling is normal, I thought. I saw my PT on Friday, and like you, said I should have it looked at, even though it did not look out of the ordinary. The following day, as I was walking down the hallway, my pant leg became wet. I went in to Urgent Care and was put on Antibiotics. I had made an appointment with my surgeon on Monday, and he ended up cutting me open. This incision was large enough that I had to pack gauze into the hole three times a day. Thankfully it did not get to the joint, where a do over is necessary. I am still packing gauze twice a day, and I see my surgeon today. It is looking much better, and I hope to get a good report.
Prep your living space before you have it done. Infection is a major concern but is rare (approx 4 out of every 100). Be vigilant with your rehab and listen to your body. I'm on week four after my TKR and it is wonderful to feel how smooth it is when I'm mobile! Good luck.
I had TKR 3/12 this year and several weeks after developed redness on the side of the leg, chills fever headache 101.9 temperature rushed to ER. Admitted went on antibiotics on iv stayed inpatient 4 days there was concern of blood clots but nothing was found went home on antibiotics for a week and cleared thank God! Cellulitis was the dg and it went around my leg also close to ankle I was SCARED
Went for a revision due to pain and lack of mobility. Found out the hard ware was infected just a little redness around the knee and very warm why? Came from my first surgery.
I'm at 8 weeks post op and the pain in my knee feels like I am 2 weeks post op. Everything hurts. Now it is swollen. Nothing is red or warm and the incision looks great. Reached out to the surgeon's office. Hope this is normal and not an infection.
I'd go to your Dr. Immediately. My knee wasn't hot, I didn't have a fever, but I had a horrible knee infection. I spent a week in the hospital. Very scary stuff. I had a picc line for a month. I was taking the strongest i.v. antibiotics available for a week. I'm still scared
@jasonstockman406 oh, I'm so sorry you had an infection!! That's scary! I did get bloodwork an an xray done and everything is normal. Surgeon said I'm probably doing too much, which I don't think I am. I started using my cane again. Pain is a bit better, still swollen. I will reach out to the surgeon at the end of the week if not much has changed.
I had TKR both legs 2016 and 2019. Had a very bad fall 6 weeks ago. Broke 2 ribs, cheek bone and whole right leg blue and black. Developed a large hematoma right knee. Surgeon cut open in theater, drained it and gave antibiotics. One day in hospital. Yesterday leg started swelling and Today hematoma was back. Last stich opened up. Thick yellow puss poured out like a little river. I pressed and drained it as much as possible, cleaned it with chlorhexidine and washed it with Sterile Saline solution, covered it and closed it with surgical waterproof dressing. Couldn't get hold of my dr. Leg is swollen and hurt between shin and calf. Cleaned and dressed it 3 times already since 13h00 and now 22h19. What to do next please??? Far from dr and hospital. I'm in South Africa and very worried. Some advice would help. Thank you.
@@dittohead7044 thank you so much. I appreciate your prayers!!!!Still no answer from anybody. I don't think they will answer. I managed to get to a house doctor who flushed it out for with saline solution. The stitches came out as well. Knee is still leaking but can't get hold of the surgeon who did the operation. He doesn't reply to my messages. Sad story.
I wish you added dates and times as to when to notice if it’s affected. Like 1 day post op? 2,3 a week like when do you consider it infected after how many days. Day 1-2 it’s gonna be a little red painful and warm to the touch. I just need more info
Why are these people not given antibiotics right after the surgery? This is very scary, I had foot surgery years ago,the dr never prescribed anti biotics,I daveloped a serious infection, went in the hospital for 4days,I nearly had my foot amputated, now I'm afraid to have my knee done!😢
Great information with helpful photos. All knees will have some redness and swelling and it can be hard to tell the difference from bleeding to superficial infection all the way to a deep infection. A thorough PT that communicates with the surgeon is key. This is my video where I discuss infected total knees - ruclips.net/video/ZRV9CFy7XSU/видео.html

Oh goodness. I am so sorry to hear this. I am so glad you knew the signs and went in to the hospital. Hoping for a quick recovery for you ❤️
God bless you and I hope for the best for you ❤️🩹
I just got my picc line out last week. I got a really bad knee infection and I'll be on antibiotics til March
I had a full knee replacement back in October 2023 and to honest I have no problems whatsoever I’m glad I had it done I’m not in any pain anymore

What makes the side of your knee swell up and hurt after 9 months

@@lorijean1487 it's tough to know what is over doing it, and not doing enough with a new knee.
Infections can effect knee replacements years after your surgery.
My mother had her surgery on 11th sept 2024 but after 2 days blood is coming out from right leg (replacement done for both knees)..any suggestion?

Usually they do give you them in the IV. Definitely ask the surgeon it’s a very valid concern
Mine gave me oral antibiotics right after surgery for two weeks
@@dr.samanthasmith please can you read my comment above and perhaps respond with some advice. Would really appreciate it.
