The most unbelievable thing about this, is that Spartan spears didn't just reappear in their hands. I always thought they did
Well in God of War Ragnarok, he DOES get a spear the regenerates which I found funny.
@@themultiplechannel5588 fuck that game
Bro it’s a great game
@@themultiplechannel5588 indeed
@@themultiplechannel5588 I think that was the joke dude
The way I always saw it, the minotaurs and other monsters you fight in these games were all soulless copies of the ones from the myths, you only fight the real one once but after that they just throw lesser copies at you. So, it would make sense for the copies to have alterations made to them by whatever God is sending them after Kratos, like making Harpies match the element of the location.
I like that idea. I think I thought that with the minotaur in the first game and why it's mechanical. It got killed by Theseus then resurrected with Daedelus' technology and godly magic to protect the labyrinth.
@@armsofzeus that’s a cool idea
Thank you infinitely for giving us tremendous video gems.
You should talk about every mythological inaccuracy in Dante's Inferno (The video game).
Please.
There are plans for that
@@TheMythologyGuy1 Thank you! You are amazing!
what about asura im sure the weird game with give some cool buddist (or hinduism i dont know forgive me) mythos
I’m with this guy. Review that game
Second this! Hope to see the Darksiders series and Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death on there as well, for ye olde Biblical stuff in a new coat (as well as some references to other mythologies) and Mesoamerican mythology.
I love the fact that Thanatos has a butterfly as an animal symbol since when people see a butterfly they usually react happily. I love greek mythology for little details like that
And also because butterflies are the symbol of change, and what more change can you do then dying?
Also also, butterflies are actually really freaking creepy when looked up close
"Kirby flashbacks intensify"
I wanted to point out that the creators of god of war stated that Kratos and Cratus were entirely different characters and the similarities in their names was pure coincidence.
I have mentioned it in the comments section of several of his videos, but he seems to keep treating them like they're supposed to be the same being. I'd be a lot more annoyed if I didn't like this guy as much as I do.
Too bad they didn't make Cratos a boss in one of these games.
Would be cool to see a battle between Kratos and Cratos for the title of the real protagonist of GOW.
Just like his daughter Calliope is not actually the muse Calliope.
@@jdrvargo287 he already knows this he has mentioned it before many times in various videos
@@elledy92 And his mother is not the same Callisto who turned into a bear. Even in Greek myth there are distinct, unrelated characters that share the same name. Look at all the different people, male and female, who were named Pallas.
I don't know if this was intentional but I liked the detail that Thanatos and Erinys seemed to bleed something close to gold or yellow. Might be an unintentional nod to the fact that Gods in Greek Mythology bled golden ichor.
Yeah I thought that too. That’s why this is the only GOW inaccuracy vid where I didn’t list the blood type as an inaccuracy
Wth is ichor?
@@leonelimalevu2199 The blood of the gods. It is golden, and, according to Hesiod, the source of their immortality.
Meanwhile zeus covering the entire screen in red
@@kylzepolaczkowaty2197 hahaha ya ya you're right
Ghost of Sparta has always had a place in my heart. It's so cool that they brought back the spear in Ragnarok and with a mythical justification in Draupnir.
I really love this series hope it carries on
Every Mythical inaccuracy in The Mummy(1999)
@@jeffreygao3956 I’d watch that.
@@manlysoutherner3696 I know right?! All these 'Every mythical inaccuracy in...' videos so far cover Classical mythology. I understand Andrew got his start with Classical mythology and he's Georgian making Classical mythology part of his heritage, but I'd like to see other mythologies have their fair share too. Like Egyptian.
@@jeffreygao3956 While part of the Big 3 along with Greek mythology and Norse mythology, Egyptian mythology is often overshadowed by Greek mythology and Norse mythology.
@@jeffreygao3956 I hope the next mythology that the God of War series tackles is Egyptian mythology because seeing Kratos fight Anubis would be beyond awesome.
Funny enough, some of the Developers said that Kratos wasn't even named after the one from Greek mythology. It was completely unintentional.
It's weird to think that according to Herakles in 3, the 12 labours and Kratos's quest to free himself from Ares were concurrent. In fact there's a tineline. Kratos was sent on the quest to kill ares at the same time Herakles was cleaning the Augean stables while Kratos killed Ares during Herakles's trip to the Garden of the hespirades
Meaning all mention of Herakles in GoW prior to 2 is anachronistic as Herakles was *still doing his labours*
I disagree. Herakles was already famous before he did his labors. He was only seventeen when he killed the Cithaeron lion and knocked up Thespius' 50 daughters and gained great renown for it. This was before he'd even met Megara, so I'd say people would know his name already during Kratos' misadventures.
I completely forgot about this spear, no wonder he was so good with the Draupnir spear in Ragnarok. He already had plenty of practice with magic spears that let you throw them then make a new spear with magic.
And correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Spartans themselves used to have spear training as well, so that’s even more experience for him.
@@IamaPERSONthat's actually directly said in Ragnarok
@@DaveMiller6042 perfect
It's good to see Thanatos without a scythe and instead have a sword. I've also been reading up on Greek mythology for plenty of years and it is kind of irritating that people claim that he should have a scythe instead of a sword to be more accurate and then when I point them at the mythology they say it's a fake mythology. So thank you for your wonderful video even if it is on the game but it includes my favorite Greek god Thanatos.
1:55 There actually were creatures called tritons in Greek mythology, that were named after Poseidon's son. In many instances it was basically their name for merfolk, but when treated as a distinct group were said to have blue or green skin and hair, and often two tails instead of one.
There was even a creature called a Tanagran triton. It lived near the land of Tanagra (near Thebes) and would devour women as they got near the water. It was defeated when Dionysus left some wine out for it. The creature drank the wine and passed out, then while it was sleeping Dionysus cut its head off.
I was about to say this myself! Not that they were associated with Atlantis, though, so there's still *an* inaccuracy there
@@williamjones5334 True, they weren't really mentioned with Atlantis. Though since Atlantis has always had a heavy naval/maritime theme, it's not a huge stretch to add them in.
I love all of your content it's hilarious, but at the same time it's educational. You'd make a great teacher.
Small correction: There are actually multiple (thousands as far as I'm aware) of Keres in Greek myth. They are the spirits of violent death, as opposites to Thanatos, who resembles peacheful death, and assistants of the Morai and the god Moros. They could be stopped in their hunger for blood with which they would drive soldiers to kill eachother by the gods but could also be let loose by them. So they are capable of killing through other people
Well said. I mentioned this in a comment here as well. Both the fact that there are implicitly a multitude of them, but that they definitely do kill. No idea where he got the idea that there are only two.
Though Thanatos actually represents all forms of death, not just peaceful. This can be seen in the story of Sisyphus. Since when Thanatos was bound in that story all deaths stopped, including violent deaths (much to Ares' chagrin).
Really loving these, they are encouraging me to learn more about Greek mythology and even others.
I’ve only played GOWs 1,2,3,2018 & Ragnarok so watching these videos teaches me things “Kratos” went through in this series that I didn’t know thus making his growth hit that much harder.
You know, if Rick Riordan was seeing this comment, I wish he could make a series involving Percy and the gang against the Kingdom of Atlantis. I mean Atlantis was founded by a group of half bloods, who became evil, maybe the Atlanteans could be the villains of the series and maybe try to take over the world and become the world superpower they used to be as well as take up another war against Olympus but this time, they came prepared.
That’d be really cool
I'm actually picturing how such a story would play out, like in the earlier arcs we encounter undead Atlanteans who are searching for a series of special items, the purpose of these items is unclear until the last few books, where we learn they're being used to raise Atlantis itself out of the sea. When Percy and co actually journey to Atlantis to stop them, it's discovered the mist is heavily concentrated on the island, much like the mist on Mount Othrys, and the resulting battle culminates in a fight to the finish against the 10 original kings of Atlantis, who have also risen from the dead.
Percy did say in "Blood of Olympus" that Atlantis wasn't real...
Still, that doesn't entirely rule it out!
Isn't Atlantis his father Poseidon's kingdom?
@@williamjones5334 but in actual reality it exists
I like these, it's like CinemaSins for mythology without the counter
Keep up the good work!
CinemaSins but good.

Thanks for being an amazing content creator.👍
I don't know if it was said in the novels but it was heavily implied that during the time Deimos was imprisoned he would try to escape numerous times but wouldn't get too far. I'd imagine he had the bare minimum of eating and getting clothes seeing he's wearing a different outfit from when he was a kid and to go through all of that with little sanity left on the possibility of being rescued after 30 years has to take extreme willpower and determination but I feel like if Deimos lived he would've suffered from PTSD for some time as Kratos helps him but it would've been cool to have seen a call to the movie/story of 300 where Deimos became the Spartan General like Leonidas and lead the Spartans to fight with Kratos to take down Zeus.
i think thanatos was trying to recruit deimos thinking he is the marked warrior to destroy olympus so he gave him clothes and weapon but turned out he was a disappointment after years of training

Honestly surprised you didn't mention the fact that Spartan Spears were not used for long-range combat. The spear was a close-range weapon. It was the javelin that was a long range weapon.
Probably because the spear has plenty of up close attacks as well.

Thank you for not counting off these games. They have done amazing job creating these games based on the time and resources they came out on.
As someone who's played most of the games and loves learning about Greek mythology I can't what till you get up to the newer titles
He’s not going to be going over 2018 or Ragnarok any time because they are so vast in story and lore
Ghost of Sparta was my favorite growing up, great video!
All the time when you said something along the lines of “this isn’t mythologically accurate” in my mind I finished the sentence with “but would be cool if it were”.
Also correct me if I am wrong, but wasn’t Thantatoses animal the butterfly because of a wordplay? Like “psyche” in Greek means both butterfly and soul? Learned that from Hades (the game).
And this is just a random thought, having the mother of a child of Zeus turn into a monster, which forces the child to either be killed by her or kill their mother feels like something Hera in historical canon would absolutely do. Sure I don’t think that was the case in this game but it would absolutely be in character for her
psyche (ψυχή) means soul not butterfly in greek
also hera once had zeus turn to his real form (it kills any mortal who sees it) in front of his pregnant lover to kill her (in the myth she became friends with zeus lover and convinced her that in order her to believe that it was accualy zeus she had to ask him transform into his real form, zeus did because he had given her his word that he would do it i didnt understand that part that well and then she died)
@@hallo23779 thanks for correcting me on the psyche, I could swear there was some wordplay involved but whatever.
Also yes, I am aware of the Dionysius/Zagerus origin story. All I said that forcing a child of Zeus to kill their mother or be killed by her, would be in character for Hera. That’s all
@@frankwest5388 i havent heard anyone call the buterflies psyche (i am greek and i live in greece so if it had a use like that i would prob had heard it, the greek word for buterfly is πεταλούδα )
Absolutely, and maybe the idea that the guardian of Pandora's Temple was actually the real Minotaur (The one that Theseus killed in his story) himself brought back from the grave and is now used as a protector of Pandora's Box, with multiple other Minotaurs (including Cyclops, Geryons, Etc.) being mindless, bloodthirsty copies of the original. That would've so cool if it were real, but sadly it isn't. That and the concept of Kronos, instead of being chopped up and thrown into Tartarus, was used as Pandora's Temple's walk-around slave for all eternity. So many things in these games made so cool and creative than what actually happens to them in their real mythology...
Thank you for your channel, man! I've been a fan of mythology all my life and your videos are highly entertaining. They brighten my day. Thanks for being awesome! - Jon
“And yet you never turn in your essay” i love it
I love how the gods would often punish the mortals, in this case callisto, for being tricked and/or forced into sleeping with a higher ranking god. same case with medusa and poseidon.
Finally I've been waiting so long for this!
Im addicted to this series, I used to just do this in my head but now I have a hilarious partner in my light criticism antics and its glorious!
To specify series I mean the whole "pointing out inaccuracy of ---" not just God of War
13:45 props for both Erinys and Thanatos for being the only deities to actually have golden ichor in their veins!
Kratos' name was apparently just a coincidence rather than a representation of Cratus
I am learning every time I watch your videos dude. Keep up the awesome facts of mythology.
This was really fascinating and amazing thank you
Awesome video my dude, love your explanations on movies and video games, and most of all an awesome RUclipsr so glad I ran into your one video " every mythological inaccuracy in Disney's Hercules".
I always look forward to these. You do an amazing job.
Aside from this I hope you also talk about Spartan: Total Warrior (PS2, GC and Xbox) and Thor: God of Thunder (PS3 and XB360) .Two GoW clones that both take from mythology.
Ah, it's refreshing to see someone talk about these problems without having to argue with children.
Seriously though, very informational and entertaining as usual and I'm so glad you went over this!
If I may suggest an idea... Going over the inaccuracies of the webcomic "Lore Olympus"?
It's an obsession of mine but I would also love to see you pick it apart with your perspective.
Of course though, you don't have to.
If you haven't already, definitely worth picking up to read (either on webtoons or in the physical copy) at least.
Edit: Would like to clarify, I do know most of them already, I want The Mythology Guy to go over it because of it's inaccuracies and see if there is any I don't know.
Please don't reply with the answers, especially without a spoiler warning for those who haven't read it yet.
Off the cuff:
* Demeter, Hera and Hestia are Kronos' daughters, not Metis' (and yes, Kronos ate his daughters too. First in fact)
* Chrion and Hypnos are male, not female (Chrion had daughters though.)
* Metis was a goddess of thought, not fertility.
* Kronos ate his children as soon as they were born, so Hades' childhood was entirely spent inside Kronos.
* Helios sided with Olympus in the Titan War, and so maintained his freedom.
* Apollo never r*ped Persephone. He did try to propose to her, as did Hermes, Ares and Hephaestus, but Demeter wouldn't let any of them near her daughter and chased them off.
I love these mythology inaccuracies videos
They should cast you as a comic relief cameo in the next GoW game. As a scribe called "The Keeper of All Knowledge" or something like that.
That’d be a dream come true

We’ve been over this, Cratus and Kratos are different characters
Fun fact: the voice actress for Athena in God of War did also the voice for Athena in Age of Mythology.
Indeed. I mentioned that in the God of War 2 video
The Kratos of the games and of the actual mythology have nothing to do with each other, the creators of the game had no idea the mythological Kratos existed.
Good video btw
Its good they pointed out how Thanatos is older then the Olympians. I was thinking they were gonna say he is younger then them😂😂
"I know this is gonna shock people, but Spartan spears weren't capable of endlessly regenerating when thrown."
Draupnir: Allow us to introduce ourselves
I rewatched the other god of war videos yesterday and now this, impeccable timing my dude!
I love being a nerd so much 😂
I actually think at the end there that she's not saying sorry to Kratos but to Ares, these prequel games kind of set her up as the mastermind behind Kratos' entire bloody conquest. I personally theorized even though it never directly said in the games, that Athena was trying to take control of Olympus from the very beginning effectively pointing Kratos in the direction she needed him in whenever it convenienced her.
Banger video btw if I could like it multiple times I would.
I've been here since 100k, and even though your setup hasn't changed, your videos just get increasingly higher in quality.
