    What fun to see "the boys" together in this! It's interesting that the 4th convict (supposedly J. Carroll Naish) is heard but not really seen in the this commercial.
    Mike Mazurki - "Wow! The new Pontiac!"
    Elisha Cook Jr. - "What a sweetheart!"
    Lon Chaney Jr. - "The Pontiac!"
    J. Carroll Naish (unseen) - "What a Beauty!
    Robert Stauss - "The new Pontiac"
    Leo Gorcey - "What a gas!"
    Also, there are only 4 convicts in the Pontiac at the end of the commercial (definitely Robert Strauss and Lon Chaney Jr, but it's hard to identify the other two). Is it possible that they got Broderick Crawford to chase after the train? Whoever it was, was really sprinting!

      This from the September 16, 1968 issue of Broadcasting:
      General Motors’ Pontiac Motor Division today begins its TV campaign for 1969 models. But the models it is using in its new series of commercials are of an earlier vintage.
      The campaign theme “Breakaway” will have eight 30-second spots in the first commercial flight with longer and shorter versions for local market use. The first commercial in the series, a “mini-movie” spoofs prison films and features a roster of film characters from the double-feature era: Broderick Crawford, Leo Grocey, Lon Chaney Jr, J. Carroll Naish, Robert Strauss, Mike Mazurki and Elisha Cook, Jr.
      Other commercials in the series star George Raft, George Brent, Rudy Vallee, Maxie Rosenbloom, Iron Eyes Cody, Richard Deacon, Scat Man Crothers and Jack Nicklaus, among others.
      Place through MacManus, John & Adams, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., the spots were produced at Klein Harzman Hecht Film, Hollywood. Cost of the spots is estimated at $250,000, exlcusive of air time.

      It was probably Crawford himself doing the sprinting. He was only in his late 50's here, though he always looked older than what he was.

      I don't recall seeing this before (I'm 66), but I also thought that the con after Lon was J. Carroll Naish. This is around the time he was making 'Dracula VS Frankenstein' with Lon, but some are saying it's Jack Albertson.

      That's right,
      the GREAT PAUL RICHARDS!!
      Paul was a wonderful character actor who had a magnificent speaking voice. Today, most people probably have never heard of him (died in 1974) but if you're a lover of old TV shows from 50s-70s you no doubt have seen his face. One of those actors who has facial recognition but you never know their name. He started with Eduard Franz in the psychological drama "Breaking Point " during the 1963-64 TV season. It was a spin-off of "Ben Casey" that unfortunately only lasted one season. The show broke new ground in that it dealt with issues of homosexuality, frigidity, and rape. These topics were hardly, if ever, discussed on TV. I encourage you to watch this groundbreaking show here on RUclips; there are about 12 episodes posted. You'll love it!

      Episode had some good people like Shirley knight, Lou Antonio (who has to be in his 80s), and the wonderful Virginia Gregg as the pill poppin' mother...the dinner table scene was serious, sad, and funny because you could tell the mother was "tranquil";

    The fourth man who is heard but not seen is Academy Award character actor J.Carroll Nash. He is pictured in a photo I had seen of all the actors, but for some reason they cut him out as the camera passes Chaney Jr. if you freeze Chaney jrs closeup you can just see him at Lon's shoulder. The two have appeared together in a couple of Universal Studio's Horror films in the 1940's then made thier last film together in a low budget piece of garbage in 1970. A sad ending to their careers.

    • @rareimer
      @rareimer 6 лет назад +1

      Well, a) the commercial is only a minute long, b) Pontiac would have insisted upon maximum emphasis on the cars, and c) Naish was arguably the most normal looking of the bunch, the only one who did not look like a cartoon character come to life. All of these combine to suggest why he would have been the loser in the editing of the commercial.

    The are six members in the work gang. The fourth one does not get any face time with the camera. I am going to guess that he is also a veteran character actor but I can not make out who it is from the group shoot. there appears to be only four sitting in the car as the train pulls away. Leo Gorcey is absent.
