Moser is in a league of her own. Other singers can just stare with wonder. You can imagine Damrau, Sills, Sutherland etc. all listening to this with jaws dropping, transfixed. Moser sings technically perfect of course--but what sets her really apart is her dramatic chops--but she doesn't go overboard. Its all balanced perfectly. Searing, intense, unforgettable.
I had the pleasure to hear Edda Moser three times as "Queen of the Night" - Munich, Salzburg and Vienna - in Munich she received 21(!) curtain calls. She belongs to THE generation of singers that, lucky us, we have on records and CDs for there will never be another generation of those divine voices.
Yes!! "O Zittre Nicht" is subtle, multi-emotional: respectful, hopeful, sad, frightened, inspiring, and heroic. An aria to be sung by a real character. But "Der Holle Rache" is just angry and athletic and angry and athletic and angry and athletic, a cartoon.
No, the discerning among us prefer it, because it has so much more to offer. There are so many different sections and moods, and then, the technical parts are there, too....those runs in the allegro are tough! I always choose this one when I am asked to sing the Queen.
@@Diva_D Callas sang La Traviata, Norma, Lucia di Lammermoor, Nabucco, Anna Bolena, Il Pirata, Macbeth, Il Trovatore, Il Corsaro, Attila and Armida. These are all dramatic coloratura roles. So you're telling me she was miscast in all these operas?
@@Diva_DCallas is a dramatic coloratura, but other kind. She's more at the side of dramatic sopranos, and Edda Moser is more coloratura Mozartian type of soprano. They both fall under one voice type, but at the same time they are so different
She is the best Queen of the Night I have ever heard. I would applaud every soprano who could take on the role, but her voice is really created for this role. The high notes are just so natural.
Now THAT is a Queen of the Night that strikes the required fear into listeners hearts and would obviously scare the crap out of any Tamino. And that high F is to die for!
I can't add anything that hasn't been said...except to say that Moser is my absolute favorite Queen of the Night and this entire Mozart album is one of the best recordings any singer has ever made.
Amazing! Up until the middle of the Larghetto, this aria has no note above the medium high f and could be convincingly sung by a mezzo. That's almost how Moser sounds in the opening recit, which gives her queen a tremendous authority right from the start. And from that, her spectacular move into the high coloratura register for the final Allegro.... she is the queen among queens!
Diese fantastische Höhe ruht auf einer großartigen Tiefe. So eine ausdrucksstarke, gesunde Stimme. Je höher der Ton desto besser der Kontakt zum Körper. Man spürt die Tiefe der Atmung.
Both Edda Moser and the orchestra are absolutely marvellous! To listen over and over again! She is my favourite Queen, this aria is what I would use to answer the question "What is the perfection?"
Edda Moser had the perfect technique for that role. Her voice was more dramatic than those of other coloratura sopranos. And, yes, she could sing the coloraturas. A splendid combination. No wonder this recording circles the orbit for all those E.T.'s wanting to know what human art means. (It's true!) Moser is a perfect choice.
It is exactly how die Königin is supposed to sound: dramatic, fightening, with seemingly effortless and unlimited high notes. Wonderful. Only Karola Agay comes close.
The greatest Queen of the Night. The voice Mozart envisaged for the role- a dramatic soprano with incredible agility and range above the staff. This role has to be sang dramatically, or what's the point? It's the fucking Queen of the Night.
+Pe Callahan I'm not actually an avid listener of Moser, but I can appreciate her strengths. She has a darker, almost metallic timbre that I admire for the Queen of the Night. I actually do love Popp's rendition. Extremely polished and such a refined line, but maybe too elegant a sound for the ultimate Mozart bitch lol.
I can understand you both. If I say that it's because Moser knows how make us feel the psychological disorder, the dangerous mind, the violent behavior of the Queen of the night. Many others Queens of the Night are only "beautiful", more "pretty", I admit. Melting technic perfection and intelligence of the character is so difficult ! Ach ! Mozart, Mozart !!! :-) Kind regards.
+jmiller05 exactly!!!! she's not la sonambula or wimpy other coloraturas--this lady is on a tear and moser nails all the dramatic and MUSIC possibilities of the role!! any body else singing this--including Damrau--just doesn't measure up here....
+Poudre d'Escampette yes--one can feel the demented psycology of the queen through moser---don't get that with others--and of course the balance of beautiful singing! aren't opera singers amazing!! two things at once--
SING DAMMIT! This is the most amazing recording of this aria i have ever heard, Moser and Damrau rule this role! They ARE the Queens of the night, and LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!
That is it. In the line-up of all the great singers who sang and documented their potrayals of the role of Mozart`s Queen Of Night Edda Moser is quasi naturally outstanding by vocal and interpretative means. She impersonates the role with weight controlled fervor and vocal beauty. Unsurpassed.
Probably the finest in this role ever. Certainly she outshines even Sutherland in this role. Her dramatic presence, her absolute mastery of the Mozart coloratura style [far different than the later bel canto style], her perfect pronunciation of the words, and the sense of grandeur and potency which must be present for this role are incredible. I never saw her onstage but certainly she must have been superb given the immersion of self into the character in this performance.
Wow! There's some power in that voice! If she had sung the Queen of the Night's aria at me, I'd know I have been given a piece of her mind and then some!
The definitive interpretation of this role, rivaled only by Damrau imo. Her voice is so big and commanding, while also agile, clear, and precise. It’s like it was built specifically for this role. The absolute best!
I actually don't think it's OK to be light in either aria. I think the Queen of the Night is a dramatic role like Kostanze, Donna Anna, Eletra, and Fiorgilini. Mozart loved the dramatic coloratura. Die Zauberflote is so popular and dramatic coloraturas are so rare that people have had to compromise when casting the Queen of the Night.
Diese fantastische Höhe ruht auf einer großartigen Tiefe. So eine ausdrucksstarke, gesunde Stimme. Je höher der Ton desto besser der Kontakt zum Körper. Man spürt dei Tiefe der Atmung.
You don't hear it because lirico sprintos with agility are very rare. Massenet did an opera called "Esclarmonde." The title role for that opera requires this same voice type. Massenet said "Esclarmonde" was his favorite opera he ever composed, but it's rare to hear today because there is not a soprano around that can handle the demands of the role.
I always enjoy hearing and comparing the differences between a lyric coloratura and dramatic coloratura's interpretation of these arias. Both are thrilling though the dramatic coloratura seem to focus more on the volume and the lyric more in speed. Thank you for the delightful post!
I have been listening very light queen's aria long time but this is not light and...this is so nice. She is mother and strong enough to order to tamino..music is perfect...
Diana Damrau performed it on a studio recording, it is amazing, it is as wonderful as a live recording. From the album "Arie di Bravura" I like Edda Moser too.

Totally agree. People of this century should notice the real nature of the role.
