    My father was born in Uxbridge as was several generations before him, Randalls was a familiar store that we went to on a regular basis. My Uncle Eric was a manager here, he lived with his grandparents from an early age because his father was at war in France, his grandparents were friends of the Randalls. I loved going to Randalls - all the beautiful polished wooden cabinets and stair case, each department more grand than the previous one. I bought my husband a lovely rocking chair from here 52yrs ago and we still have it - as good as it was all those years ago.

      Yes it's such a shame these stores are going but they simply aren't viable anymore in today's marketplace. There is one in the small town where I grew up (Barsleys, Paddock Wood) that seems to be surviving on fumes these days. The trade these places do get tends to be from the older generation, who still care about customer loyalty and would rather pay a bit more in their local store than get it cheap elsewhere. My parents are a good example of that as they still shop at Barclays. Sooner or later none of these independents will be left, save for the few famous and elite stores like Harrods.

    I had an art gallery/hand papermaking studio in SW Michigan for over 10 years and set it up with all vintage display pieces like a long glass and oak counter (I had restored and refitted) old Singer sewing machine, and various other wonderful old cabinets painted in chalk paint and more as s display piece and more. I LOVED having vintage display pieces for my shop/gallery and my customers enjoyed seeing them as well.

    • @Wally-H
      @Wally-H Год назад +1

      Correct. People always complain that he is greedy because he buys for maybe 1/3 of the resale value but as a business owner, I appreciate the overheads he has, e.g. paying his restorers, paying T for his time helping him on the van, paying 20% VAT on the selling price etc. Some of the profit he makes on all of his sales has to go towards the rest of his not inconsiderable business costs like insurance, electric, phone / internet etc. etc. Drew probably is a millionaire now, but good luck to him - he runs a decent business in the right way.

Indoor golf and cricket is popular where I live in the Midlands just an idea for such a distinctive Art Deco(original art deco or in the style of. As I say I don't live local) building.

      Drew has to make his margin, allowing for all of his overheads including VAT on the sale, fuel on the van, T's wages, overnight accommodation on their long trips from Wales, corporation tax, paying the restorers he employes etc. If the Randalls don't like his offers, they can say no. That makes him a good businessman, not a conman. Learn the difference.
