This is such an amazing tune. Total virtuosity from start to finish. I think Bob Berg earned a place among some the most elite players ever, including Coltrane, Brecker, Chris Potter, and a few others worthy of this comparison, His playing was explosive yet controlled, and it's a shame he died at such a young age. What a brilliant musician...

My wife and I saw this lineup a year or so before this in Northampton Mass while we were at UMass Amherst. Lincoln Goines on bass, and Dennis Chambers on drums. Sat in the front row with my jaw dropped for the whole show. These guys were like rock stars to me and my friends in those days.

**Nerd Alert** but Berg always owned that b6 sound. Threw that shîz in everywhere, and had a fabulous tonal & harmonic personality on the sax.

Now I feel like an a$$, as I just read he died 5 yrs before Brecker.
Well I just learned that 2 great sax players died to young in New York in the 2000's.

I guess just coming out and saying somebody was heavily influenced by another guy would cut down on the words of humble explanation 😂 Michael Brecker influenced HORDES of sax players as did Joe Henderson on him. Bob Franciscini is the lastest in the Stern lineup with that Breckerism going on.. I think it's a SAFE New York thing of keeping MY band sound consistent 😂😂

Something about Bob Berg can't quite put my finger on. Not a hater per se...but never a huge fan of his. I like his tone. I think my issue was always he seemed to be in Brecker's shadow. Not Berg's fault. Not the truth necessarily just my gut feeling. Imagine all the work Brecker took from other sax players through the 70-80's? Dude was called for the stuff you her on pop radio and nailed it all from the "Another Auld Lang Syne" solo at the end, to "Still Crazy after all these years", even the crap rap dude he played sax for on their one hit. I never thought Berg was copying Brecker but from a trumpet players ear seemed they had similar tone. OK I'm done rambling. Just hope Berg hasn't started playing EWI since Brecker's death.

jdhrap Totally get where you're coming from. IMO, berg just has a bit more soul. Bit of a chicken and egg scenario here, but that's my just my very subjective and personal opinion.

There are very few musicians like Brecker- so versatile, so talented and so deep. It seemed like he could do virtually any style and be inimitable. Other musicians were learning from him ( Mike Stern once said he used to transcribe his solos) and imitating him- it is only natural. He was in a completely separate league.

On the Mike Stern CD "Time In Place" (where this song was originally presented), Michael Brecker plays on tenor sax on Track 1 and Track 7 (which is Chromazone) and all other tracks are accompanied by Bob Berg. Until now, I never checked this and thought that all tracks have Brecker on tenor sax. So yes, they may have similar sound on this type of music, but copying / learning from the best saxophonist (M.B.) is acceptable in my opinion. But on his own CDs, Bob Berg has his own, individual sound and style.
BTW, sadly he died way earlier than Brecker, in 2002, in a car accident.
