FIA Formula 3 cars, while only having around 380-400 bhp from their 3.4L V6's compared to the approximately 560 bhp of the S5000's 5.2L Ford V8 engine, have a LOT more aero. The S5000 is a variant of the 2018 model Ligier JS F3 (its officially known as the Ligier JS F3-S5000), but with a lot less aero from the front and rear wings. The cars were re-designed and engineered so that mechanical grip, driver skill and car set up were the key rather having so much aero grip that they were able to go through turns like they were on rails.
The F3 is also much lighter. An FIA F3 car weighs in at 673 kg (1,484 lbs) including driver and fuel. An S5000 weighs 925 kg (2,039 lbs) including driver and fuel. So despite having almost 200 more horsepower, the S5000 has to lug around an extra 252 kg (555.56 lbs), plus has much less aerodynamic grip
S5000 is essentially a modern take on the old Formula 5000 cars of the 1970s.

I love the concept of the S5000. A modern and safe chassis with a big engine, iron brakes and few aero. I hope to see the s5000 racing again soon. The F3 is fine too, but it's for another purpose.
