I feel like the Russian Generals probably knew it would be a disaster if they didn’t take out Ukraine air defenses and Putin just ignored all his advisors. None of the generals looked super comfortable in the few meetings they televised.
I think Putin didn’t think he had time to do air campaign because it would take a couple of weeks and would create a lot of casualties since air defenses are often in cities.
Russian planes aren’t great at targeting missile sites or anything for that matter because even in 2022 they still don’t have targeting pods on most their planes.
I also don’t think they have much experience using bait planes and coordinating radar site attacks because it takes multiple planes and good tactics.
Russian pilots notoriously don’t get enough seat time, about 100hrs a year. I’d guess 99% of their combat experience is dropping dumb bombs in Syria and Chechnya.
Re: getting the planes into Ukraine: The wings on a MIG29 come off easily and quickly, and they would then fit inside trucks to get them into Ukraine. I don’t think they need to fly them into the country.

A distinguished but biased panel. For example, Gen. Ham refers to the “illegal” annexation of Crimea in passing, as if its legality were not subject to differences of opinion. It seems to me to have been not much different than the annexation of Texas by the United States, which Mexico thought illegal. In any case, that’s an academic argument. The practical reality is that Crimea is home to a Russian naval base at Sevastopol, as important to Russia as San Diego is to the United States. Whatever happened to Realpolitik? Practical strategic thinking would have avoided this war in the first place, and would help end it now.

The days of just annexing sovereign countries has ended that’s the whole point of a defensive alliance like NATO.
….Texas wanted to be annexed the same year they declared independence so I don’t see how that compares to Putin invading a sovereign country when he took Crimea.
…He always builds up to these land grabs sending little green men in to kill political opponents and running propaganda wars. Then he claims the Russians there want to be annexed and sometimes even holds a rigged election.
….He could rinse repeat this strategy over and over, occupy a small area then recognize it as a country and invade to take the rest of the country. Like when does it stop all the other non nato countries are next. Appeasement was the strategy we tried in the 30’s with Hitler and we saw how that worked out.

I think they actually read the articles Mearsheimer published in journals of political science.
