I have had 2 96 escorts and 1 did it at about 90,000 miles. I was able to just put a used piston and a used head on it and it went another 80,000miles before it was sold to someone else(still working fine). The escort in this video has almost 300,000 miles and original head with 225,000 miles never dropped a seat(head did get warped so I had to put a new one on). I do recall the one that dropped the seat making ticking noises for months before it fully dropped it(thought it was a noisy lifter).
I've been looking all over for THIS video. I just purchased a 2002 Escort and it is EXACTLY the same setup as show in this video. I searched all the 2002 Escort vids - no luck - until I found this. Thank you.
I just replaced a thermostat on 95 ford 1.9 You will need 6mm 7mm 8mm pliers screwdriver. After removing the housing i see where it has a passage way and that must be why my motor seems to not be warming up right. i blow through the passage way and some air was making it through. i would think it should be air tight. the new thermostat did not fix my problem. i think i will just make another gasket and not making a hole for that passage way in the housing. Thank You Sixty Five Ford. Your video did help me see how to do the job. Tchau.
Thanks for this video! I have an old '94 Mercury Tracer that needs a new thermostat and this video was invaluable! Gonna save me a ton of money on labor.
Thank you for the advice! I will try to cut off the band and install a new clamp tomorrow. I'm going to try to remove the alternator and see if I can get at the water pump side of the hose that way. I can get the radiator side off fine but the other end will certainly require patience (and maybe my wife's small hands!). I installed screw on clamps on the upper radiator hose, same are going lower/heater. Thanks again for the video and the help, I really appreciate it!
I hear nothing but great things about them and I'm glad I got this one in the condition it is in.. It's been a joy to ride so far.. (don't tell my ford ranger with 279,000 I said that).. It's already heart broken with the LX sitting in the carport.. Cheers!..
There only Achilles heal is some will drop a valve seat(1.9l). It is hit and miss which ones this happens to. It happens around 100000+- miles and you can hear a ticking well before. Mine has never done it but my sisters 96 did it at 110,000 miles. Put a junkyard piston and head on it and she sold it at 200,000 without any other troubles.
I have a 96 escort wagon and there are no videos on it lol thank you so much, now I believe I have to bleed the system so gonna have to figure that one out
I took out the coolant reservoir and moved the PS reservoir, and the cruise control device. I can now see the spring clamp but my channelock pliers are too big...so I need to get a smaller pair along with some tin snips to cut that collar on the heater hose. Thank you for your help.
The short little hose would need to have the band cut off and when you reinstall a new hose you would just use standard hose clamps. Yeah, the lower rad hose is a bugger. Really no tricks to doing it other than, patients and small hands. A couple different types of pliers to grab the spring hose clamps comes in handy. I suggest discarding the spring hose clamps and using screw ones as they are easier to get to later.
Thanks for the instructions! I was able to complete this maintenance using your video. Two questions: if you were to replace the heater hose on that escort, what do you do with the clamp from the temperature sending unit? It doesn't have any springs or screws, it is just a metal collar on the hose. Second question, would you consider doing a video on how to replace the lower radiator hose? It is a notoriously difficult hose to access on this car. Thanks! You've been very helpful.
I used regular worm clamps when I replaced the little hoses that went to the temperature sender. I replaced my lower radiator hose when I had the head off, and it wasn't too bad.
Thanks! Great video. It is nice that you let us know about how long the job took so I know that if I take that long it's not because I am doing the job wrong. I looked under the hood of my Escort today and was really confused by how the heck I was going to get to that thermostat housing. Your video answered that question perfectly!
I have a 2012 fusion sport but bot a 95 escort couple weeks ago. I hope you make more videos on this car so I can learn from them. Maybe like transmission filter and drain, fuel filter. brakes. and basic maintiance. Hope you make a few
I made another gasket without a bypass hole and yes the temperature gauge is running higher now. The heat is just a little better but still not like i would think it should be. I always thought if your heat is working right you can only hold your hand in front of the vent for 5 to 10 seconds before you have to pull your hand away do to the pain. Look out for all the sharp stuff that will cut your hand.
The heater leaver under the dash(just to the right of the gas pedal and up) sometimes doesn't fully lock into position and leaves the cold air blend door partially open. Put your head under the dash and watch it as you move the cold to hot lever to make sure it locks into hot position.
Thx to ya video it helped me with draining radiator, moved the cover to drain the coolant. OMG today all that drained out was rusted water. Had to flush and drain 8 times. Did get that done. I wanna find where to find a new transmission drian plug. I found that today, drained it. little less then 2 qts came out and was so dirty and black. Again do hope to see more videos from you =) thx again.. What about changing spark plugs. the number looks has the alternator in the way and not much space.
Rusted water isn't good. They could have put the orange antifreeze in. Yeah, the one behind the alternator is a little buried but a socket with and extension always fits.
Permatex 2 isn't like "silicone gasket maker" products where they can be used alone . It aids the paper gasket in sealing and makes it tacky so it stays put while you work.
My 96 has 2 super miniature hex rods that are directly behind on each side of the light. One moves the light left and right and the other up and down. I remember trying to adjust them years ago and they were frozen in place. I had to WD-40 them pretty good. I also had to move the light fixture by hand while trying to turn those screws.
you mentioned showing a video on how to remove a broken bolt. did you make said video? and how can I get to it? One of the thermostat bolt heads broke off. please help
I show the welder method ruclips.net/video/39vnfn9t288/видео.html which works amazing. Other than that you can cut a slot in it and try to extract it with a flat blade screwdriver or drill a hole in the center and use a screw stud extractor.
+Toni Dodd I would check first to make sure the radiator fluid is full(cold) and then make sure the electric fan is running when it is hot and idling. The fan should kick on and off as it cools the engine.
These escorts can immediately show a warm state (dashboard instrument) whenever the rad hose is not set tightly check it and make sure there is enough coolant in the container
I made a quick paper gasket ruclips.net/video/otK1GamS3wk/видео.html and used a gasket sealant(Permatex #2) but not a RTV gasket maker. You could use a stand along RTV gasket sealant without a paper gasket but not with one.
Do you know a trick for replacing the bottom radiator hose? I can get the end loose from the radiator. But the other end at the water pump is blocked by alternator on top and either a smog pump or compressor on the bottom.
In the main video picture: you can see where my hand is, it is directly towards the firewall about 8" from my hand. It is brass colored and the only thing with wires on it connecting into the cooling system. If your fan isn't running, the relay is a more common problem. Test is by turning on the AC, it will kick on the fan no matter what when the compressor is engaged. This will let you know if it is your Relay or Temp sensor.
sixtyfiveford well it does kick on when the AC is on and when AC is off it doesn't ever run, and my relays are new and before winter I know I had a mechanic replace my thermostat, now that I see how easy it was I feel stupid for it, but he also changed the temp sensor, hes a family mechanic so it was cheap enough but nothing has made it work, that I know of, currently its -10 and more by me so I don't wanna do much with it atm, but if that stuff isn't helping what would you suggest? im not the most engine savy person but im trying to get it working lol
It could be a computer issue or more than likely a wiring issue. Either can be daunting. They sell universal electronic thermostat fan controls. They are available at almost any auto parts store and cost around 15 bucks. It will bypass the computer control and become a self sufficient system. It consists of a temperature probe that gets jammed into the radiator and a adjustable switch that you set for what temperature you want you fans to kick on at. It then gets wired directly to the fans. About the same difficulty as installing a basic car stereo.
i think i may have seen it, but with these temps lately its been waay to cold to work on it without a garage, i also need to find out where i can get Screws for the fan to attach it to the radiator again, would you know where i can get some? i lost them when i attached an aftermarket fan that didnt work, well actually a friend lost the screws but thats not important, i just want to get my fan to work for now, i cant afford a mechanic to go under the hood to diagnose the issue till summer
The fan doesn't need to be held on very tightly. You could use wire or even zip ties and they would last. As far as getting the exact same screws your best bet is the wrecking yard.
No heat could be a few things: plugged heater core internally, switch/lever on the dash not moving the blend door to the hot position( drivers side under dash behind radio), heater fluid switch that allows fluid to flow though the heater core not operating and finally the thermostat.. You'll notice at 3:33 in the video the small heater core line. This flows into the firewall and into the heater core and then out of the heater core and back out the firewall into the cooling system. These lines should be warm/hot o the hand twhen the car is warmed with the heater on. Also feel the top radiator hose, it should be very warm/hot when the vehicle is all the way warmed up and be the same temp as the small heater line going into the heater core.
Hey, on this exact car, a friend is having an issue where the car will sporadically rough idle and stall when no acceleration is applied. If given full throttle the check engine light cuts back off and it returns to normal. IAC and MAF have been cleaned and it provided no fix. Any clue what this might be?
ok... after running for about 15 minutes @ idle and about 1/4 to 1/3 up the temp gauge the fan kicked on...... is that a proper heat range before the fan activates???
+Toni Dodd The fan sounds like it's operating correctly. Overheating can be caused by a few things: fan not turning on, leaking/low coolant, sticking thermostat and finally a blown head gasket. So if the fan is OK and coolant level good we can go a little bit further to diagnose the issue. A blown head gasket will cause air bubbles in the radiator and generally white smoke(steam) out the exhaust. A little steam is normal when the engine is cold and it is cold outside 40'sF or lower but if it continues when the engine is hot, it's not good. Also the steam from burning antifreeze will have a distinctive sweet smell and be very obvious. A sticking thermostat is known to happen and if everything else checks out you'll dive in and change it. It really isn't a hard job, just a little messy with the antifreeze that leaks out.
what is the first thing to check when you see antifreeze seeping from your rad cap ? my rad is full of antifreeze and the rad cap is tight . what should i check next , please help 65 FORD.
+adrian Z Hdez Adrian Z Hdez This is how I generally do it ruclips.net/video/39vnfn9t288/видео.html . You can also drill it out and use an easy out but it will take a lot more work.
sixtyfiveford Hello body.thanks for answer me..igual didnt take the thermostat cause one bolt get broken so i stop removing it.still is in the head cylinder.reason i want to put a new one is because my car gets hot.
sixtyfiveford i changed the cylinder head cause was broken.watching videos lite this i sow how do it.but now te engine gets hot and i dont know what is the reason.is there any way to make a test what reason my car gets hot that yo can tell me please??my car is a ford escort 1.9 automatic 1996..same than the video.
If the fan is turning on and it is still overheating, you could have other issues: clogged cooling system, malfunctioning thermostat, or blown head gasket.

very well made video with clear direction to make the replacement
Thanks, I'm glad it was helpful.
I just replaced a thermostat on 95 ford 1.9 You will need 6mm 7mm 8mm pliers screwdriver. The thermostat housing has a check ball. It could be stuck in yours. Replacement thermostat housings are relatively inexpensive.
My only complaint is that I did not find this video right off. THIS is exactly what I needed for my 1997 Escort! Thanks!

Smashing tutorial :-)
And all the bolt sizes for correct socket selection :-)
Thanks for posting!!.
I own two 1996 Escort LX
One wagon and the other a 2dr hatchback both well cared for bc they are extraordinary cars
What issues have you had to deal with while driving them?

Please do post a video on how you extract broken bolts.
nice job! id love to see a tutorial on the bolt extraction.
Thank you for the Vid! anytime i get help thru youtube, I make sure and thank the uploader. THANK YOU sixtyfiveford

I've never used permatex #2 before, from the looks of it you're safe to add antifreeze immediately after reassembly?
Permatex 2 isn't like "silicone gasket maker" products where they can be used alone . It aids the paper gasket in sealing and makes it tacky so it stays put while you work.
How do you adjust the headlights? Could you do a small video? I been playing with the screws and stuff and nothing.

I 2nd the bolt extraction
My 1994 Ford Escort LX 1.9L SEFI has a leak, where, it seems to be coming from the thermostat housing,,, could a gasket have blown??
Roflm0x Yeah, it could have.
well where is the Temp Sensor on there!? I wanna take it out to get my fans to run for now, everyone said on the thermostat, but I didn't see it...

How can I tell if no heat is due to my Thermostat before getting into it? My Temp gauge stay's at cool and don't see any leaks.
+Chris Baricko Is it overheating? No heat on the inside of the car?
Just no heat in car not overheating and temp stays cool
No heat could be a few things: plugged heater core internally, switch/lever on the dash not moving the blend door to the hot position( drivers side under dash behind radio), heater fluid switch that allows fluid to flow though the heater core not operating and finally the thermostat.. How do you check transmission fluid without a dipstick??
On the manual transmission you pull out the speedometer gear and see how far the fluid is up in the gear

Make sure the electric fan is turning on. The fan relay can go bad.
sixtyfiveford Okey body..i will do it tomorrow morning and will text you whats happen.thank you body and God bless you..
Is there a shortcut to do this?
Not really. This is as simple as it gets. If everything goes smooth it should only be like a 30 to 45 minute job
What do you know about the the valve seats dropping on this engine?
1.9 wasn't as bad as the 2.0,fix the problem and these engines will run forever
I followed your video.fixed, until operating temp.then started to overheat.bypassed the heater core still was over heading.can you help me.
Is your fan turning on?
Yes, and no.where the thermostat hose is gets hot after the the thermostat the hose is cool.
it seems like the thermostat doesn't open.it's a brand new thermostat.the one I took out.feel apart.
I think it needs to be bled of air,I think.
If the fan is turning on and it is still overheating, you could have other issues: clogged cooling system, malfunctioning thermostat, or blown head gasket.
Would have been a better video, if you told the audience what size "the teenee tiny bolts were"
If people need to be told what size wrench/socket to use they shouldn't be attempting any automotive repairs.
is "teenie" a standard or metric? smh.
What kind of jackass comment is this?
What a pain in the butt.
Azlinthelich It can be.
