I’m tearing down a 671 as we speak that has the exhaust ports on the liners almost closed off solid.. carbon came loose in 1 cylinder and destroyed cylinder 3 piston.. unless you want to show people how to guesstimate a rebuild i suggest you start revving the piss out of it.. however with that turbo I’d at least put some n70 injectors in it to offset the boost leaning out your fuel mix.. i bet your egt’s are through the roof with that turbo now

    One plus to turbocharging these engines, even at low pressures, is much better performance at higher elevations. Regardless of ambient air pressure, the turbo will maintain optimum psi in the manifold as you climb or decend grades in mountain areas.

    Turbo charging a 6-71 , I've been searching for this information and now your video just popped up on RUclips . AWESOME VIDEO Kurtis , Thank you sir for an excellent video . A 6-71 is in my future for sure and yes it'll be turbo charged . I worked on the welded rail trains on Union Pacific Railroad and operated the power cars that had two 6-71's that were mounted up top by the operators cab . Engines were mounted with the rear closest to the cab and had sucker fans blowing back my way over the engine and three big hydraulic pumps . In the south around Arkansas , Texas , Oklahoma , Louisiana and the other hot states it was really tough in the heat but helped a little in the cold weather . Start both engines , idle and engage the clutch drive slowly to get the pumps working to heat the hydraulic oil and then open the throttle wide open . Twin 6-71's screaming all day was heaven , Love their sound , finally had to route the exhaust under the rail cars as it got bad . I can identify a screaming old Detroit Diesel from far away . Such a sweet sound . I'll be a subscriber for as long as I live . Can't wait to watch your previous videos and future videos . Great video sir .

You may want to find a 6v71 or a 8v71 for your loadstar. You seen how much I had to extend hood on mine. A 6v or 8v will be a bit shorter. But hey long hoods are awesome anyhow. My next big project is to move the front axle forward and put peterbilt fenders on it and make a new hood.

    When comparing to a 4 stroke, the 71 series has a bore of 4.25" and stroke of 5.00". But not all of the stroke is used for power. The exhaust valves open just before the cylinder ports are exposed so to figure usable cubic inch, most have .95" ports, and the exhaust valve open just before that, so you take off about 1.1" off the stroke and you end up with a stroke of 3.9". So 4.25 ÷2 = 2.125 x 2.125 = 4.515 x 3.1416 = 14.184 x 3.9 = 55.317 x 6 cylinder x 2 stroke = 663.8 actual cu/in compared to 4 stroke. So a turbo from a L10 would be more usable.
    I turbo'd and air to air intercooled my 8V-71 with bypass blower. With original N65 injectors with 300hp and 800lb/ft torque, then with 7G75 injectors it went to 375hp and 1,125lb/ft torque. REALLY wakes up the engine.

    • @kurtisgleba3121
      @kurtisgleba3121  3 года назад

      Very good point. I never thought about it like that. What do you think about a turbo from a 478 cu/in diesel 4 stroke? I may possibly compound turbo this engine with that turbo and the one thats on it. The other turbo is off of a m35a2 army truck. 3.5 inch exhaust outlet. Think that turbo is too small?

    that turbo will work..........however it will be lag and not make much boost. Its not so much about cubic inches, its about horsepower...........a 200hp engine needs a turbo that is for 200hp. The other issue is that cummin's turbo is very LARGE for the application and makes the fitting more difficult. Especially since you can get good cheap turbos from Alibaba Congrats on keeping a classic truck running, thanks for the video and that super glorious sound! There is one upside to low boost............the air temps are very low compared to higher boost that cooks the air (which reduces density/effectiveness). When running 2 compressors ( turbo feeding a blower) for high performance, they use an inter cooler. The biggest plus is that the turbo works best at giving the blower more air when the blower is dropping off at low rpm pulling.

    • @kurtisgleba3121
      @kurtisgleba3121  3 года назад +5

      Thank you for you comment and advice. Yes that was my main goal was to be more like a ram air intake than a turbo pressure. I figured giving the blower a few lbs of positive pressure would help it too and can't beat the sound! I think I have about $100 in the entire project so for the price it was a lot of fun to do. It did in deed give it a bit more power. I used a brass water check valve for a blow off. It keeps boost around 8 psi at full load. I'll be doing a follow up video on it shortly so stay tuned!

    I love the sound of the DD. Nice job on the gears and fabricating the turbo. I have one question though, to me it looked like the cast iron piece that connected the exhaust pipe to the manifold could be removed and install the turbo in its place. The intake on the supercharger would have to be changed to accommodate the turbo. It looked like the they made that adapter based on the size of the turbo.
    My dad drove a 67 International 4000 CO, my uncle had an Oliver 1900, so I grew up enjoying the 2 stroke. I now drive a 76 Ford F250 repowered with a 4-53T Detroit, loving every minute of it.

    Awesome video! I'm quickly falling in love with the ol' Detroits. Great fabrication job, too. However, I am wondering, there is a hose attached to the blower pick-up pipe. Is that the intake hose for the compressor, or the 'vent' for the crankcase / engine breather? If it's the crankcase breather, you might want to move it to somewhere before the turbo. Otherwise, you're directing turbo boost into the engine as well. This video was made about 6 months ago, so I'm sure you've sorted it out by now! Ha ha!! Good job!!

      Thanks for the comment! Yes the Detroit is a great reliable engine. A bit underpowered but always gets the job done. That hose is for the air compressor intake. Why not give that some boost too! The turbo made a huge difference on fuel economy and overall performance.

    You should turn up the fuel pressure a little bit to compensate for the added boost leaning out the mixture, i know its not much but still couldnt hurt and might gain a tiny bit of power and safety.

      Safety? The leaner you run a diesel the safer it is, not like a petrol, quite the opposite.

    Can fellow Jimmy lovers help me. When converting a natural 6-71 to a turbo where is the oil feed line from. I guess from a blank plug screw near the timing covers. Good fabrication from this guy. These are called pedestal s. I worked for a guy that had a Transtar DCO an 8V71 with a turbo on each bank 4x2. 400+ hp

      Mine was in the right rear side if the block near bottom. The drain was right under it. But may be different on different Detroit's. I'm no expert. It shows where in my video

      I ran it about 500 miles now since video. All is well. It seems to have a little more low end torque and better fuel mileage. Im running about 5psi boost under full load. I used a PVC check valve for a blow off valve. Ill be sure to post a follow up at some point. Thanks!

    I know everyone is gonna laugh at me, but I am assuming a 10 speed box?...I am keen on old trucks and love to see them on the roads, but never got a chance to drive one, sooooo I am trying to learn a little bit here and there...when I was a kid out west, COE's were everywhere....now when I see one rolling, I always give the driver a thumbs UP

      That's awesome you have a love for old trucks!. It's actually a 15 speed. Dont feel bad. Its the same shift pattern as a 10 speed road ranger but it has 5 deep reduction that are selected on a separate air switch.

    426ci two stroker is equal to 852ci four stroker. All Cummins big engines are low oil pressure.....40 psi running at the gauge usually. I have had 3 855ci based engines and ran a couple of ISX's.

    The blower is in the way, I’m not sure if u have done much research on Detriots but if u love the truck and want to keep going find the 671 blowers that have the bypass. Also are you checking boost in the air box or at the blower intake air horn. I would love to see u put some n90 injectors in it and blower bypass then u will be grinning ear to ear. The compression ratio on n/a was 21:1 I think and the t/a was 17.5:1 the motor will be fine I have done this swap before with great results

    • @kurtisgleba3121

      I have a boost gage yes, it will run about 7psi at full load. I made a makeshift blow off valve out of a plumbing check valve. It gets way better fuel milage from the turbo. I love the truck but when I can afford it im pulling the Detroit out and putting a 3406 cat in it. When i put in the DD i left extra room because I knew one day id want to put a big cat in it
