Oh man, I just started watching your videos. Really enjoying a lot of your information. But I didn't realize you were catching the insects and killing them 😭 do you usually kill them? I figured you were just finding them dead
If you place a butterfly in acetone I'm afraid the scales and the wings will get ruined by getting soaked so I advise against that. I have however placed butterflies in a killing jar with acetone fumes (fingernail polish remover) that dispatched the specimen quickly
Stamp envelope will work as well. I use glassine because I use them for butterflies as well....as long as the specimen is safe and secure then you can use your preference
Hello. I have watched and read about live dragonflies being placed in envelopes to get rid of their waste, then they are placed in acetone to kill and degrade fatty tissue. Lastly, they are placed in plastic baggies with a card like you just did. So, can specimens from the plastic bags be pinned? Can they be rehydrated for pinning because they already were placed in acetone?
hmm....good question.....I've never attempted doing that.....if I were to do that I would try on a common species just in case it doesn't work.....one could also pin right after the acetone bath and have it dry on the pin instead.
@@dailyentomologist4953 Okay, thank you. I was going to try it as well. If I had to guess, I think it could be done. I discovered the method from... (www.pugetsound.edu/academics/academic-resources/slater-museum/biodiversity-resources/dragonflies/collecting-preserving-specim/) and (dragonflywebsite.com/catching-and-preserving-dragonflies.cfm). Method is discussed on RUclips as well.

Hi, can I store the freshly caught dragonfly inside of a stamp envelope, or does it necessarily need to be glassine/wax paper?
