This video documents a couple of days of a multi day solo trip camping in my Jeep Cherokee XJ Overland Build. I'm driving, exploring and fishing a small river in the north of the country. The river runs for many miles but I just follow a small section in this video. The start of summer has been very wet and windy and today is no exception. Fortunately the wind dies down and the tracks are no issue. I hope you enjoy this segment of my excursion and thanks for watching. Mike

Hey Mike! Really enjoyed this episode. Your invite to SoCal stands, of course, and we'd be more than happy to host you if you decided to cross the pond. Please excuse all the pronoun rubbish going on over here, as most people don't buy into it. Watching the turbo repair from 12 days ago as I write this....black mamba, lololol. You look well and happy. Perfect. Thanks again for lowering blood pressure once again for the people of the world.
Thanks for the invite! It could be a trip of a lifetime when we are able. That turbo revisit wasn't much fun but I can't complain, it was my fault and It was nice to paint it all and do a better job the 2nd time round. Thanks again for watching and for the invite
Haha yeah the drone of the jeep puts max to sleep every time. I'm use to the daylight now oddly, same as the darkness in the winter. You kind of just go with it I think. I sleep with the covers over my head at home and in the tent so it's always dark lol 😆

Great vid mate..... You can't beat some good solar panels and power station...that's an impressive chopper you got mate..😂 The drone footage is a great addition to your videos...the new turbo and mods made it ok ?.. I don't think it's big foot you need to worry about nowadays buddy... Just watched a news report in America about a police officer who witnessed what he thought was a meteor flash...then a few minutes later someone called the police saying that there are 9 foot or 10 foot tall beings with big eyes looking at them and that they are not human....the police officer went round to the the people who phoned the report in..he had a body cam on and they were not drunk or on drugs...they were abit scared tho... It's a strange world we live in mate...it's best to keep an open mind on things like that....big foot has few friends I guess..😉.. Take care bud...and watch out for big foot and 10 foot demons..👍
Thanks mate, the drone has made it much easier to film these excursions without feeling exhausted from setting up a camera when I'm finally at camp. It just keeps things flowing naturally. I have only had one very odd experience out in the forest. Ive never been back there and it isn't that far away. You are right, you have to keep an open mind although I don't let it stop me getting out. Thanks for watching 👀
Great trip again, gives me lots of food for thought and ideas for my own overland build in the future. Glad you managed to avoid the Bigfoot, I don't even want to think how much that aubergine 🍆 might've hurt if he managed to hide it under your mattress. Imagine the back ache in the morning 😖 As for those pesky pike, try to fish closer to the rapids, either the top just before it gets more... rapid? 🤔 or the tailout after the rapids. Sides of the current and calm sides of rocks even in the rapids usually hold grayling and trout. Pike tend to stay in the calmer pools. As for lures, try Bete Lotto spinners if you haven't yet, a staple in a Lapland lure box. Black, orange or pink with dots or stripes are great. Daiwa Duckfin jigs, 5 or 7cm, trout colour. Good for getting deeper into holes and work a treat for grayling and perch. Salmo Hornet wobblers too, work both for casting and trolling.. And, none of those spin your line. I've messed up lines in matter of hours when the river adds even more twist to a spinner. Also, loving the fact you're picking up Swedish so well. You're doing much better than my English fiancé with Finnish 😂
My Swedish isn't fantastic but I get by. I need to pick up duel lingo again to be honest. Thanks for the tips on the lures. My tackle box is very small (no pun intended). I do need some more lures though as there looking worse for wear. I'm enjoying fly fishing though, some nice trout and grayling over the summer, although I absolutely don't mind perch for eating either. Anyway appreciate you watching and hope the build ideas come to fruition
@@WorkshoptoWilderness I hope so too. 💪🛻🏕️ I've been building my "tackle box" since late 80's, it's changed a lot over the years and now I have a few fully stuffed, pocketable, little boxes for going up to rivers, couple of bigger boxes for trolling mainly for zander, those fit in my backpack. For pike I usually carry a small IKEA bag as I mainly fish for it off (someone else's) boat. And my pike lures nowadays are mainly +20cm rubbers, so they take a lot of space. I have an old fly rod I picked up few years back. Still haven't got around to it. I wanted really bad to get into fly fishing as a kid but my parents didn't like the idea. I did manage to get some marabou feather and some other bits and bobs and was tying makeshift leeches with a hook on long pliers I was holding up to a table with my knee 😅 Once I manage to move back up to Lapland, I promise to finally get into it. It's a great way to spend a cold winter evening, working in the garage or tying flies for the upcoming summer. 🙏
I'm self employed, so like a sole trader as its called in thd UK. I work at a number of different places really. Sometimes as a mechanic, I also do graphic design work. RUclips is another part of it also, I earn money from my videos although not enough for it to be anything serious. Its just extra along side other work. All together it's fairly varied and good fun, I like it. I've been offered some interesting permanent contracts while I've been here but as of yet I haven't taken anything because I enjoy being self employed, as I have been for the last 12 years.
Its a power bank that runs the gopro and charges the camera gear. I have no batteries in the main camera and it runs solely off the power bank. I put the powebank in an instalated box so it runs in the winter.
So calm and relaxed. What spout does fit on the Rotopax? There is no original part from factory. Only with a spout/tab a water storage makes sense. Maybe someone can help me out please.
I've got a video on the rotopax lid spout. I picked the spouts up from a fuel station adapted them. ruclips.net/video/x1zox5IusPU/видео.html Thanks for watching also!
Sounds like old diesel music to me. It's very normal for this engine. Had it almost ten years, I rebuilt the injectors about a year ago. That's the way it sounds.
Mate.... the flies are right bastard! I've found that a decent cuban cigar helps (well, maybe a shit one would also work, but I refuse to smoke shit cigars! ). or maybe its the rum....?
What do you use against ticks?. Here in Scotland they are everywhere in hundreds. Wee walk around grass and trousers are full of this asholes. Back where I am from we use permethrin but to get it here in high density is impossible. Do you have any suggestion?
You don't really get them in the north here. Not many anyway. I have never seen one. There are more and more though apparently moving north. Warmer summers, its 27c here atm..
Love the XJ! Videos are great! I was curious on the storage in the rear of XJ with the table that pulls out!!!! Did you make it or where did you buy it?? Thank you
Thanks for watching! I made the drawer platform in the back. It's functional but still a prototype as the runners aren't too good in cold weather. I have some videos on making it, although there are older videos and a bit boaring.
I just have mine across the back seat. Ivo has a rod holder. I will build an external lockable rod holder eventually. I don't actually control the drone and drive or I would already be dead. It has object recognition software and obstacle avoidance software so I just tell it to follow my jeep or Ivo and it will just fly with us up to 35kmph. Thanks for watching!
Hi Mike, Good Job! I can't wait spring to move my ass from a chair to my Disco2 and go for some trip. You make me feel motivaited and my Disco now has drawer system I built during the winter and all I need for now 🙂Temperature is above 0 degree C and it is much less of snow here in Norway... so yehhh next weekend I'm going for a first trip this year 🙂 Can't wait 😀 PS. I know that not all people like to share with nice spot in public but if it is not a problem for You could You put GPS cordinates on video with spots? Kris
If you mainly crawl and your off camber a lot then you will see a difference although the severity of that depends on the tent you choose. There are some extremely light weight tents on the market, couple that with two load bars for mounting and you wouldn't compromise the jeeps rollover angle. My tent is about 70kg spread across the top equally. Its heavy in my opinion but light in the tent world, apparently. My jeep can still happily sit at 45 degrees and not topple but it's certainly not as stable as without the tent. Obviously most of the weight is down low but still the tent makes a big difference in that tipping point and how fast you enter and exit those angles.
Hi there. Been a follower from the old channel (on my main account). The jetboil hanger, did you DIY it yourself or bought it ready? If it's DIY, could you make a video out of it? Thanks!
Hey! It's a hanger that came with the set. It's an msr reactor stove and the hanger is designed for it. I'm not sure if jetboil have one but I'm sure it could be adapted or made.
The platform above the alubox use to be lower and those corners contacted it so I drilled the rivits and took them off. I should put them back on now really now that the platform is higher.
Its a 4 cyl marine diesel engine. 425 OHV. It came standard in Europe with the XJ's. They are not that good stock and underpowered, they can also have issues with the head cracking and original shitty head gasket (mostly due to inadequate cooling). I've swapped the head to an AMC one along with a ML gasket. I've also swapped to a mechanical VE pump, which i've tuned and paired with a GT series turbo, manifold and a different intake manifold. Also a small but efficient intercooler with solid piping. It makes somewhere near 160hp now with around 400nm. Its somewhere around there away as my friend has dyno'ed his and I am yet to do mine. The only downside of tuning is terrible fuel economy. When I first bought it it did 36mpg, now its probabaly 20 or less, but it runs great and pulls like a train. Anyway, life story over, thanks for watching.
Its a 2.5l marine diesel engine. They came as standard in the euro exports. There pretty solid engines and you can make decent power and torque out of them if you tube them up and upgrade the heads. The original heads and gaskets are bad though so they do need changing if you want reliability. I have lots of build videos on it as done a great deal to mine to get it yo about 380nm. ruclips.net/video/kQ5Vl6pTJUU/видео.html&pp=gAQBiAQB
Take a look at BMW 57 engines. It's probably one of the best diesel engines ever made. They sell an adapter kit for the ax15 and AW4 transmission. Also, a plug-in ecu kit that handles all the electronics. It's a popular swap, and you can get over 550nm orlf torque
Mike, I am glad to see you outdoors again. I would like to see you take your Jeep Cherokee over the rocks in the beginning, just to see how the solar panels do with the vibration?? I understand that the pike are small, but could you not still cook them? Thanks again for the great video......
The Pike taste awful to be honest. Worse in the summer anyway as the slime they produce makes them more tricky to prep. I have eaten Pike several times in a few ways, its not the best fish for eating. Perch are pretty good, especially when smoked, trout would be preferable. There wont be many vibrations on the rocks because I would be driving so slow, just crawling. The gravel roads and pot holes are more of a test given you hit them at speed and it shakes the whole car. I will keep testing them and If I see a rocky trail I will try it, but I think they are on there for good. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
@@WorkshoptoWilderness Ok, how often have you used the solar system?? If you travel all day in the woods, and get to camp with just a few hours of daylight. Is it worth the the money and time? Still, very curious. Thanks again, great to see you outdoors.
@@currysmith9241 Its used on every outing currently. I have used it on four camps (only one filmed) and also a recent day trip to locate some escaped horses. Its functioned really well on sunny days and power still comes in when cloudy but obviously much less. In the winter I have no clue how it will perform, and in the dead of winter when we have four hours of low light I cant imagine them doing too much. It does mean we can stay in one place for as long as we like because the power in is much more than the power out (if sunny)
@@WorkshoptoWilderness Mike, is it worth the cost?? Would a on board battery system be better? You do this more than I do. Let me know from you not corporate sponsors. Thanks.
Maybe you're just not bigfoot's or jimmy's type?. Or perhaps, try playing a lil hard to get with them instead of just throwing yourself at them all desperate like, trying to lure them into your trap. Maybe they're just not that into you.
hey MIKE, have you become a Swedish citizen or are you keeping your English citizenship, I was wondering about the legal facts on staying in Sweeden if you are a visitor. Or can you get duel citizenship?
I have to live here for five years to apply for citizenship. I've been here for four and a half. We will probably apply when we can. We have permanent residency status though so we technically don't have to but its probably best considering we live and work here with a child in the system.
Its a really long story and a lot to type. It was all very messy and it involved the previous owner, bailiffs and the court but hes no longer ours and probably dead given his age.
Might be worth getting an electric stove with the solar panels. May also be worth testing the citronellal based insect repellants for efficacy - much better than putting that shite DEET all over your kid's skin
I don't think I would ever use Deet on myself or my kids, not good. I tend to use a deet free one and just use it on clothes and hats. Max is too young for that also. I've looked into electric stoves but the power usage is pretty high, also not something I could use in winter. A bigger battery I think!

Loving the camera and drone footage Mike, you're lucky big foot didn't see all that tackle in your box or he would've been over stimulated. 😂😂 Atb mate.
❤ Summer vacation in Finland, pm if you want some advice.
The filming have get really good with the drone, very fun to watch, good work 💪
Hello Mike, I have been away a wile , seen last night your new videos, Greate mate!!!
Keep on going! I both that yoke for hack and tap from ollivers usa. cardan drive shaft transforming front to back , some works to do! Take care, your Friend fromthe south of France!😉
This xj is an absolute beast been watching you from the start and I have still kept hold of my one since watching sadly nowhere near the progress you have made 😢😂 long live the td
Careful out in the woods Mike. You never know when Jimmy Savile might jump out at you from behind a tree!
Seems a shame to get that beautiful Jeep dirty!
Good video Mike
Great video Mike, is it hard to get used to so much daylight🧐. Love the sound of that engine, probably puts someone to sleep though 🍺
Haha yeah the drone of the jeep puts max to sleep every time. I'm use to the daylight now oddly, same as the darkness in the winter. You kind of just go with it I think. I sleep with the covers over my head at home and in the tent so it's always dark lol 😆
You have great videos reminds me a lot of my terrain here in British Columbia Canada I have a 1998 XJ 4.0 great all around bush banger keep up
The good videos !
Great vid mate.....
You can't beat some good solar panels and power station...that's an impressive chopper you got mate..😂
The drone footage is a great addition to your videos...the new turbo and mods made it ok ?..
@@WorkshoptoWilderness please share!
@@917684901385338 I will share it in a video. I might return the spot and camp there this winter.
Great trip again, gives me lots of food for thought and ideas for my own overland build in the future.
Glad you managed to avoid the Bigfoot, I don't even want to think how much that aubergine 🍆 might've hurt if he managed to hide it under your mattress. Imagine the back ache in the morning 😖
As for those pesky pike, try to fish closer to the rapids, either the top just before it gets more...
I've been building my "tackle box" since late 80's, it's changed a lot over the years and now I have a few fully stuffed, pocketable, little boxes for going up to rivers, couple of bigger boxes for trolling mainly for zander, those fit in my backpack.
I did manage to get some marabou feather and some other bits and bobs and was tying makeshift leeches with a hook on long pliers I was holding up to a table with my knee 😅
Once I manage to move back up to Lapland, I promise to finally get into it. It's a great way to spend a cold winter evening, working in the garage or tying flies for the upcoming summer. 🙏
What kind of work are you doing these days in Sweden? Are you teaching bushcraft?
I'm self employed, so like a sole trader as its called in thd UK. I work at a number of different places really. Sometimes as a mechanic, I also do graphic design work. RUclips is another part of it also, I earn money from my videos although not enough for it to be anything serious. Its just extra along side other work.
All together it's fairly varied and good fun, I like it. I've been offered some interesting permanent contracts while I've been here but as of yet I haven't taken anything because I enjoy being self employed, as I have been for the last 12 years.
@30:56 Hey Mike, whats that black box with the gopro stickers on it?
Its a power bank that runs the gopro and charges the camera gear. I have no batteries in the main camera and it runs solely off the power bank. I put the powebank in an instalated box so it runs in the winter.
Maybe a stupid question but what’s the ground clearance of the Jeep? Love the videos!
I honestly have no idea? I will measure it and get back to you.
So calm and relaxed. What spout does fit on the Rotopax? There is no original part from factory. Only with a spout/tab a water storage makes sense. Maybe someone can help me out please.
I've got a video on the rotopax lid spout. I picked the spouts up from a fuel station adapted them. ruclips.net/video/x1zox5IusPU/видео.html
Thanks for watching also!
hahahaahaaa så kul bara lite salt sweden rocks mvh david
This excursion could be better only with pancakes.
That idle thumping would drive me nuts.. sounds like a injector is out of time or over injecting on one cylinder.
Sounds like old diesel music to me. It's very normal for this engine. Had it almost ten years, I rebuilt the injectors about a year ago. That's the way it sounds.
Hi there, just wondering, when you installed the rear shackle relocation bracket, did you retain the rear sway bars or completely deleted it?
I no longer use the relocation brackets but when I did I totally removed the rear swaybar.
Mate.... the flies are right bastard! I've found that a decent cuban cigar helps (well, maybe a shit one would also work, but I refuse to smoke shit cigars! ). or maybe its the rum....?
Lmao
I have some videos on making it, although there are older videos and a bit boaring.
bra. svenska härligt
Great video as usual. Looks like you had fun fishing. How do you carry your fishing rods? I’m impressed how you can use the drone while driving.

You make me feel motivaited and my Disco now has drawer system I built during the winter and all I need for now 🙂Temperature is above 0 degree C and it is much less of snow here in Norway... so yehhh next weekend I'm going for a first trip this year 🙂 Can't wait 😀
PS. I know that not all people like to share with nice spot in public but if it is not a problem for You could You put GPS cordinates on video with spots?
Kris
I want to add a roof top tent to my xj but I like wheeling and crawling I worried the tent will hinder it’s performance Offroad. What have you found?
Awesome video! What is the cooking stove?
Alright Mike 👋
What was your reasoning behind cutting the corners out of your Alubox butty?
The platform above the alubox use to be lower and those corners contacted it so I drilled the rivits and took them off. I should put them back on now really now that the platform is higher.
Do you carry spare valve cores? Every time I see you unscrewing them I just imagine them flying off into the abyss
I have a bag of them in the bag on the door.
wonder how the dogman would go on that false morel
He would probabaly slut drop that thing and leave the impact zone without a scratch.
Gyromitra sp can be pretty crap for humans if not prepared correctly...
Great videos, did you make the hood louvers? or purchase?
Thanks for watching. I bought them from the USA on ebay. I can try and find the item if you're interested
@@WorkshoptoWilderness if it wouldn't be too much trouble
Mybe think about a packraft.
A mate has one and they are really nice, just a bit out of my budget at this moment. I shall keep my eye on them
Does that water have a lot of iron in it?
Yeah lots. Up in the mountains its clear but down here it's full of iron.
Carrots in a spaghetti Bolognese? Controversial! 😅
Can't say I'm a fan but oddly in the UK that's how its done.
What motor is under the hood
What motor is in this jeep if you have a video please let me know
Its a 2.5l marine diesel engine.

@@WorkshoptoWilderness wondering if I can find one in the US thanks for the info love the videos man
Take a look at BMW 57 engines.

@@WorkshoptoWilderness
Ok, how often have you used the solar system??
@@WorkshoptoWilderness
Mike, is it worth the cost?? Would a on board battery system be better? You do this more than I do. Let me know from you not corporate sponsors. Thanks.
Maybe you're just not bigfoot's or jimmy's type?. Or perhaps, try playing a lil hard to get with them instead of just throwing yourself at them all desperate like, trying to lure them into your trap. Maybe they're just not that into you.
Lol @11:42 😅
hey MIKE, have you become a Swedish citizen or are you keeping your English citizenship, I was wondering about the legal facts on staying in Sweeden if you are a visitor. Or can you get duel citizenship?
I have to live here for five years to apply for citizenship. I've been here for four and a half. We will probably apply when we can. We have permanent residency status though so we technically don't have to but its probably best considering we live and work here with a child in the system.
that makes sence........
Yeah, what did happen to the dog? Mozz was it? Wife wants to know
Its a really long story and a lot to type. It was all very messy and it involved the previous owner, bailiffs and the court but hes no longer ours and probably dead given his age.
@@WorkshoptoWilderness arh mate sorry to hear and sorry to ask all the best
Might be worth getting an electric stove with the solar panels. May also be worth testing the citronellal based insect repellants for efficacy - much better than putting that shite DEET all over your kid's skin
I don't think I would ever use Deet on myself or my kids, not good. I tend to use a deet free one and just use it on clothes and hats. Max is too young for that also. I've looked into electric stoves but the power usage is pretty high, also not something I could use in winter. A bigger battery I think!
