Two of my daughters joined the Coast Guard, one search and rescue, the other a nurse. I am so proud of them. I served twenty years in the Army, my husband served ten years.
Was your daughter a nurse before joining or did the coast guard train her to become a nurse? Just wondering as I was thinking about joining the coast guard and think nursing would be a great path.
Living in Sitka, mid-winter, lying in bed late at night, pitch dark and blowing like hell I hear the CG helicopter take to the air. I lived across Sitka Sound from USCG Air Station Sitka and more than once we heard the helicopters take off on a mission. I have nothing but admiration for their service. Well done.
When we lived in the Interior they landed a float plane on the lake to be sure they could because of my dad's really bad heart. He did have 3 heart attacks out there and that was way before cell phones were around plus we didn't have electricity out there.
He's responsible for every soul aboard, he could actually face charges of he went before anyone else in some situations. The responsibility is life and death in a boat or aircraft.

right so there it is exactly, the captain is ultimately responsible for every soul on the ship, while there still on the ship, once in the water the rescue swimmers the decision maker......that is, if you're lucky enough to have a rescue swimmer....🙏
I was in the USCG from LA to about the Canadian border and from Boston to the Canadian border. We came across dead people sometimes. So when we were able to rescue people that were still alive we were totally psyched. It makes you feel so good inside to know you saved another human being. We'd all be high-fiving and grinning from ear to ear. That feeling stays with you for a long time.
USCG is way underrated and underappreciated. They are literally in the business of saving lives first. They're not apart of the Department of Defense yet are a branch of our military. They make up our armed forces yet are also classified as a law enforcement agency and keep our coastal borders safe. They are the only agency capable of enforcing federal laws, maritime laws, and international laws. They have full arrest powers and police authority yet they primarily focus on life saving missions & search/rescue. I mean how badass is all of that? How do more people not grow up wanting to do such an amazing career? I honestly wish I knew all this as a kid because I would have been obsessed lol. Very much respect the men and women of our US Coast Guard and all they do for us.
Man i need to watch this show with my father. i bet It would bring back alot of memories from when he was in the coast guard stationed in sitka alaska, which is also where i was born! Almost certain he would have been on this show if they started filming 25 years ago! I just recently found out that my grandfather was the very first Kodiak Alaska swimmer in the Coast Guard. His ID was 001, and hes told us so many stories of him jumping out of helicopters into the cold alaskan waters to save people. I couldnt be more proud.
The boat breaking free and drifting away saved his life. Had that not happened leading people to see it. He was only hours from death. He even said he was about to lay down and "Go to sleep" and we all know what that means when you are hypothermic. And without food or water for 7 days. Hes a lucky man!
I love it when one of the crew grabs a Rand McNally Road Map of Alaska! Very high tech! Don't ever give up your paper maps. Also, it isn't lost on me what first-class equipment we tax payers provide to the Coast Guard, often times so we can spend thousands of dollars rescuing people who choose to needlessly endanger themselves. I don't gripe about finding lost hunters, but some of these rescues are necessary when they should not be. All that said, "Semper Paratus!" Good on ya', men!
Typically that's more of a gulf of mexico area, and great lakes region where people tend to be extremely stupid. Alaska I feel like the people know that nature is no joke and can turn on them any second

I was coming home from kodaik island and sitting next to a nice family and we got talking and it was the wife who's a pilot in the coast guard it was cool to listen to her talk about how proud she was to be in the coast guard and some of the wild weather and about how insane it can be at times in the chopper.
The guy that survived those 7 days definitely has someone watching over him! What I do find extremely cool is he works for the ambulance system in my city!
I watched this story on "I Shouldn't be Alive". Incredible survival by a lone man who had to stay up in a dead tree to prevent himself from drowning when the tide came in. No food, no water, no shelter, freezing cold and rain. His buddy hadn't come back for him after he loaded the bear meat in his skiff because he had drowned. Seven days later he layed in the grass to die when he heard Coast Guard heli and he was saved ❤God Bless

I knew a former CG. He was stationed somewhere up north around the border of Canada. He said he got out because he was tired of finding deceased people all the time (it was a body of water people usually ventured too far out on the ice). This show touches on that fact. Sometimes, no matter what is done, you just cant save them all. He said even if you save 99 of the 100 people in a rescue mission that you still feel like you failed.
GOD BLESS ALL THE MEN AND WOMEN in the COAST GUARD Of course, this is coming from a MARINE, but just the same, I "DO" appreciate all you guys, and THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE, and we are ALL a BROTHERHOOD!!!

If Deadliest Catch has an emergency Coast Guard Alaska is the one they call. Several episodes of Coast Guard Alaska are crossover episodes of Deadliest Catch. one episode is called Western Venture Rescue what happen here is Western Venture a Salmon Cage tow vessel caught fire when the clutch failed. the four man crew abandoned ship and the vessel sank Coast Guard Alaska spotted them and sent the C-130 and a chopper from Cold Bay. It would be the Crab Boat Aleutian Beauty who would pull the men out of the water. Another episode is called Destination Lost and Found Coast Guard Alaska searched for the Destination with the Silver Spray there were no survivors all they found was the EPERB and the life ring this is all that remains of the Destination who is now a wreck at the bottom of the Bering Straits off St. Paul Island next to the Big Valley which sank years before. Several rescues include a rescue on a tuna trawler that one was on Deadliest Catch so was the Ever Unique rescue where the swimmer was almost injured when he hit a container in a gale. One rescue they had to pull a guy off the Wizard that was also a Deadliest Catch episode. Deadliest Catch needs Coast Guard Alaska they are their lifeline. some episodes Deadliest Catch gets busted by Coast Guard Alaska and the boats get fined but most of them are rescues.
I'm that was me stranded out there after 7 days and no food , no water, when the CG turned up, I would have cried like a baby out of gratefulness. Goodonya CG. (From Australia).

All my respects to these men and women who truly put their lives on the line to save other lives.
There are no words that give a deeper meaning than THANK YOU! THKS to each and everyone of you BLESSINGS serving and those whom have served. GODS BLESSINGS!!!!!!!!!!

Respect to the Coast Guard! Alaska's weather's brutal Love it its gorgeous!!
(From Australia).

amazing story, great episode
My ex-husband is retired Coast Guard. We definitely had some great times in Sitka when he was stationed on the USCGS Woodrush!
I’m a civilian and I have to admit I knew absolutely nothing about what The Coast Guard is, or what they do. The more I watch this series, I am absolutely blown away at their sheer bravery, dedication, and professionalism. ❤
Condolences to Garrett’s family. May he rest in peace.
Thank god for the United States coast guard.
