    Love these old lessons. The funny thing about Sabbath, its not the classics like Iron Man and War pigs and Paranoid that make them great. Its the hidden gems such as Hole in the Sky, the Writ, Into the Void, Rat Salad etc...that make them arguably the Greatest Band of all time. Let alone the most influential. Thanks again, Mike

    What a great sounding riff! Tommy Iommi hit it out of the park when he came up with that. It's even cooler combined with Geezer Butlers bass line. First time I ever heard the song that riff grabbed immediately!!!

    I never stop learning, Wayne. Mike has a lot to offer. Read my latest response to him, there was no disrespect meant, I tried to make that clear. Not so much an interpretation as transposing to 440, which is cool. But anyone watching iommi play it may wonder why he plays it with different fingerings/position, and the dropped tuning accounts for that. I appreciate anyone offering something contructive on the net, no fight from me.

  • @leshreddur
    @leshreddur 6 лет назад +2

    This is different than how Toni plays it, because he tunes down 3 semitones on tens, so the strings are easy to play and bend so the prosthetics on his middle and ring finger wouldn't come off. However this dude knows the tune and these are the right notes and his version kicks ass

    Back in the day, I'd have asked for tabs, but after enough RUclips and self-teaching, I'm happy to say I got all of that instantly. Great explanation/lesson, and thanks for posting.

    I watched this and thought "Oh shit, I taught myself this song by ear 25 years ago but I've been playing it wrong all this time! Noooo! I suuuuck!" Then I went and found a video of Sabbath playing it live in 1975 and watched Iommi's hands. Nope, I had it right all along. Whew.

    • @III_SLEEP_III-Daevicus

    Hello Mike.
    Thanks for your great videos. I like your enthusiasm. About Hole In The Sky, on videos, one can see that Iommi plays it differently. I think becaus he's tuned three semitones down. Iommi always tries to play the simplest way. For exemple he always uses a lot of open strings. I had a teacher who told me : avoid open strings ! Iommi does the opposit. I think it's a good approach. When playing Black Sabbath, always try open strings! hello to the cats.

    • @III_SLEEP_III-Daevicus
      @III_SLEEP_III-Daevicus 3 года назад

      Yeah, this version is just played differently all together. I took one look at the hand position and knew this wasn't going to be the way Tony plays it. He played in C# standard, not E standard tuning. It mostly sounds about right, it's just not the way Tony plays it; which is fine, and helps people -who don't want to tune down- to learn it.

    Back in the early 80's when I had my band together, I think back then I'd figured out the entire Sabbath Catalog EXCEPT for SABBATOGE, (which is to me, their best album of all time.)... [and back in those days there weren't any "tabs", or you tube, I used to have to slow down the album with my thumb, and figure out the bass lines, to then figure out the rhythm chords, alotta patience, and many hours spent figuring out the songs of the greatest rock band that ever lived!!! Until Ronny Almost ruined it, Thank god for Tony's riffs, and Tony Martin, and Ian After that... Thanks for Hole I.T.Sky, but could you also do the same for Megalomania, & The Writ? Do you think there is any other Classic rock Song with as many guitar changes as in that one? [Tony at his Zenith, if you ask me] Talk about an overlooked/under-rated album!!!

    Mike, I'm a beginner. Just starting to play electric. This kid looks like he's playing C5/D5 D5/C5 as the power chords at the end of that first riff. Is that wrong?
    ruclips.net/video/JhHt7W1x3Os/видео.html
    I have to say, for a kid his tone and sound is very Iommi like. He is playing an SG or Epi version of sg so I guess that's a good start.
    I've seen other covers playing it this way too, although not as well.
    By the way, you are awesome - I've learned 2 songs from you so far.

    I watch all these videos of Hole in the Sky covers, and alot of these dudes are clearly talented players, like this guy. But what really, REALLY bugs me, is in the chorus where they are stroke-bending and holding, they should be stroke-stroke-bending... there are TWO strokes in there if you listen to all versions by Black Sabbath and even pantera's cover, and should be striking both D & G not just D. And another thing, they should be bridging all strings, E included on fret 5 during the bending, and lifting their finger off A with finger still on E for the lower open chord between bends.
