The apology and self correction after targeting a children's hospital is the epitome of "Damn, even I'm not that evil."
@@dreamybuster that doesn't make any sense. If you follow that to its logical conclusion then you would have to say that kidnapping a child is just as bad as stealing a candy bar from a store. Or k1lling a man is just as bad as stepping on an ant because they're both living.

Rensonware (the one that Mutahar ran and it tripped windows defender) was actually a joke ransomware, but instead of paying money for your files, you had to get a certain score in Touhou to get the key and decrypt your files. The funny thing is, he actually covered it 4 years ago
Its even funnier because the original creator of rensenware actually fell for it.

Ransomware is something you hear about but never think it'll happen to anyone you know. I work tech support for a corporate accounting software company and one of my elderly clients had this happen with some group in Russia, it is truly tragic.
It happened to my computer before a couple of years ago. It randomly reset my computer and asked me to give them BTC or else my files would be deleted. I was a kid at the time, so I just turned off my computer and never saw the ransomware message again. I honestly wish I had never used that computer again after that, because for all I know, they maybe were continuing to steal my data and information after I shut off my computer off.
@YeaMan but muta....
When I was a kid I was on some porn site and a big message popped up and my whole PC got locked up.
Had a picture of Obama pointing and accused me of having CP and demanded $300 or the FBI would come get me.
As the stupid kid I was I freaked out and cut the power and shoved the couch against the computer cabinet to create a makeshift bunker and stayed hidden for 2 hours in the dark terrified out of my mind until my mom got home and nothing ever happened. 😂😂😂
Happened to me and i work in IT. To my defense i did know i was dl a sketchy file i just had forgotten i had put my UAC level down for a dev program i had and the malware ran instantly.
Happened to me once, I just changed Windows, and everything went back to normal.

@YeaMan yea okay
It was the backlash they feared, life without parole if they didn't.
There's that, but a lot of this stuff would be far less prevalent if organizations took security seriously and had the guts to just refuse to pay.
That's where the CIA and NSA comes into play.

Muta's punishment for forgetting what Rensenware is should be to get Undefined Fantastic Object on Steam and stream it until he actually fulfills the Rensenware unlock condition of getting 200 million points on Lunatic. (or maybe something more reasonable like doing it on a lower difficulty) Also, no, there's no external server that'll get you the decryption key, you've gotta actually get UFO (Rensenware doesn't come with it) and get 200 mil on Lunatic and then it'll spit out the decryption key. (alternatively, you could just cheat engine in that score and call it a day, despite what the text says there's no anti-cheat)
And no, the game's dev is not affiliated with the malware. It was made by a guy as a joke saying "what if you had to beat a notoriously difficult video game instead of paying a ransom?" The current year equivalent would be something like a ransomware that locked all your files until you beat Malenia without summons.

When I was learning about this stuff during my Master's program, it became apparent that the costs were so low that a highschooler with enough technical knowledge could pull it off, from a financial standpoint. A cheap sever, the ransom software, a phishing blast and/or paying for sponsored Google Ads in popular search results could result in a ridiculous haul. I mean, look at how devastating the whole OBS scam was a few months ago, with this individuals running sponsored ads and malware. This whole issue is cost effective for the perpetrators, and catastrophic for the victims.

My brother used to be a spray painter and the company he worked for got hit, all the paint mixes nowadays are run by PC. The ransom was $10,000 and they didn't even bother calling the police, they paid it the same day because they'd lose more than that being shut down for more than a day.

Thought it'd be good to mention that you shouldn't rely on Defender too much. It's decent, but it won't stop everything. I don't think it's cause it's inherently "bad", but hackers will most definitely try to disable/evade Defender first since almost every Windows user has it on their system.
Criminals stopping criminals
Honestly speaking, bringing awareness to this only draws more individuals into doing it lol
even if they don't pay the ransom the cost of the damage can still be significant. I worked at a company that fell prey to a rather sophisticated ransomeware attack, it propagated behind the scenes for a good while going so far as to find our server and backups before it sprung the trap and encrypted everything. the president of the company refused to pay these criminals (he was a principled man) and ITT managed to rebuild everything but it very well could have easily destroyed that company if not for the talent of the people working there at the time.
