It's possible to know. Many books and articles have been published on this subject. Karez or Qanats have nothing to do with China or Chinese culture. They were invented long before China became a unified state over two thousand years ago. The oldest Karez are over 7,000 years old. Their origin belongs to the Iranian plateau, not China.

This area is only china in name. The Tocharians were the people who built the silk road long before china. The aryans spread this knowledge all across asia. China will never release the results of the dna tests on the mummies from this region because they are European in origin. It goes against the china first policy. Even the paintings in the caves had their faces destroyed. The clothing still gave it away. Tartan patterns are a dead give away. They were master textile artisans. Soon even the origin of silk itself will be challenged. The chinese have alot of archaeological data they are not sharing because it doesn't fit with their narrative of china did it first. Professor Victor Mair of Penn museum has excellent documentaries on this region. Highly recommended

This system is common throughout NW China. The early inhabitants of the region were Sino-Tibetan, East Iranian and Tocharian (a misnomer by Early European scholars. They called themselves by the towns they lived, such as Tuti and Agni). The inhabitants were Indo-European Buddhist for millennium and Islamization started in around 10th century AD. They are now known as Uighur but this is also a misnomer as the real original Uyghur people spoke a Siberian Turkish language and believed in Shamanism. There are direct descendants of Uyghur living in Gansu who still speak the Uyghur language and are Buddhist. The Xinjiang Muslim Uyghur speak a Chagatai language which is almost identical to the Uzbek language.

All they need to do in order to keep it for long time secure is to protect the walls and ceilings with premade armed and oval shaped concrete. And it just needs to be cleaned out of dirt once in a while.
