They may not show up at all. Even if reported, the current (soon to be prior) DA's office would often not prosecute. My daughter was assaulted and ended up in the ER. A detective went to the assailant's apartment where she admitted it and her brother confirmed it - on body cam. The DA refused to prosecute. People walk into stores, grab an armload full, and walk out. No one stops them or reports it. The true crime rate in LA is at least twice what is reported.
As a resident of LA this is wildly untrue with police response time. Maybe it just depends on what station is dispatching? Also violent crime in the city has been down. The only reason i support Prop 47 is so stores pay for their own security instead of off loading petty shoplifting to police and by extension the taxpayers. Additionally police have more important crimes to pursue, my taxes shouldn’t be going towards petty shop lifting cases. Most smash and grabs happen at major retailers, I guess the ones that don’t have security figure it cheaper to eat the cost. Alot of these thieves are stealing more than $950. Also the $950 limit is just for a felony, it’s still against the law to steal. (Edit: LA resident here) Great video as always btw🇺🇸😎

I'm always surprised how big some of these abandoned downtowns are for the original peak populations of 1000 people. Frosts downtown looked big for a small peak population back in the day. What Prop 47 did is increase the dollar amount by which theft can be prosecuted as a felony from $400 to $950 to adjust for inflation and cost of living. But most shoplifting cases are under $400 dollars to begin with, so before Prop 47 and after Prop 47, there isn’t any difference.
@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip: They're arrested in CA too. California Penal Code 459.5 - Shoplifting merchandise and it is valued at $950 or less under this statute is always a misdemeanor offense that carries a penalty of up to 6 months in a county jail and a maximum fine of $1,000.
Just for information, according to Google, In Texas, in general, it is considered a felony offense if you take any item valued at over $2,500. Any item between $2,500 and $30,000 is a state jail felony, with prison time lasting 180 days to two years. Bonnie & Clyde lived in the wrong era! I think their highest take was under $1.5k, they hit mostly gas stations and back country banks, of course that's in 1930s dollars so that would be about $28k today. But robbers and thieves can get a $950 deductible? Wow! I must not be understanding some of this, can a robber go to ten different stores and get $950 each, or $9,500 a day? If Joe and Nick's RUclips earnings whittle they can always go the Bonnie & Clyde route or Nick & Joe in Cali. I don't think I would have the stomach to own a merchandise store there, blood pressure would get too high. One would almost have to sit on top of their store with a shotgun every night, or just let thieves take everything. I know I'm missing something legal element here.
A midwestern town of 600 with a median household income of $78K would have a tiny but occupied and maybe cute downtown (see your vids from NE, ND, etc.). Texas small towns not close to a big city just hit different.
I know I had mentioned something a number of months back while you were in Missouri, if you want historic and a pretty big city St. Joseph, Missouri but if you'd prefer small or dying towns, Dawn, Ludlow, Blue Mound, Utica, Gower, Easton, Stewartsville, Mooresville, Breckenridge, Sampsel, Lock Springs, Jamesport (great Amish stuff), Kidder, Trenton (railroad town with a museum), Nettleton, Wheeling, Meadville, etc. There isn't much left of these towns (the small ones); however, if you look up Livingston County Missouri history, these towns were booming for one thing or another. So if you want to provide the boom history and then compare that to what these towns are now, that may be of interest to some people. And depending, you may get a chance to talk to some very nice people who love to tell stories.
Hi boys just puzzled why there is no for sale signs on the buildings here in England it would be full of for sale signs keep up the good work really enjoying these ghost towns you go through all the best Mike Manchester England
Very good video. I have several comments. First, I wonder why Frost is not doing better due to its proximity to DFW? As to Dawson, I went through this town on my way to Kilgore, Texas a couple of years ago. Also, Braniff International Airways flight 352 crashed near Dawson on May 3, 1968 after flying into a thunderstorm. As to Coolidge, the poles with the bird on top reminded me what was done in Martindale, Texas during the filming of "A Perfect World". Martindale is now a suburb of San Marcos, Texas, but still has an old downtown. The movie producers did not think the downtown had enough old buildings, so they put up poles and wrapped material around the poles that looked like brick. They also built a frame and poured a very thin layer of concrete over it to look like the entrance. Of course, after the movie was filmed, this stuff did not last long. The movie was set in the 1950s and several cars of that era were used. The ones in the close ups had great paint jobs. The others had a "paint the bugs and all" paint job.
In 1930 a tornado killed twenty-two people in Frost and injured more than fifty. Much of the business district was destroyed. The town started declining during the Great Depression.

I'm not really sure that comparing crime rates per 100K is 'fair' for these low populace towns, seeing as how the more people, the greater opportunity for crime may skew the formula. Don't take this as criticism! Thanks for the hours of pure entertainment y'all provide for us, your vicarious thankful passengers!
ye, it would have been more interesting to see their actual crimefigures...I mean; it's not really fair to inflate a town of around 820 to a 100 k city.
I nearly choked when I saw you were in Frost, their PD used to have a guy nicknamed Elvis, cuz he looked like Elvis and was an impersonator. I’m sad to see you missed Hubbard, it’s a cute little town, and I want to live there lol. My in laws live just east of Dawson by maybe 5 miles on Highway 31, Dawson just got a new Dollar General Market, I guess they didn’t like Family Dollar getting all the business. Mind your speed in all of those little towns, I fought a ticket in Blooming Grove for 7 YEARS lol. But I won eventually!
Here in California we passed Prop 36 this time around which changes elements of Prop 47. Nice to see a peaceful video without any backtalk or smart mouth. Y'all know what I mean.
From that time Jesus began to preach and say “Repent [change your inner self-your old way of thinking, regret past sins, live your life in a way that proves repentance; seek God’s purpose for your life], for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
“There is no way anyone lives in there.” That’s precisely where some people do live because they can do it for free and no one expects to find anyone there.
It seems like at some point there will be a lot of hungry people in the big cities of California as the trend in Oakland was in your Oakland video where they are losing many of their stores.
Prop 36: California voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition 36 to increase punishments for some theft and drug possession offenses. With the passage of Prop 36, California will now undo some of the key provisions from Prop 47, which voters passed in 2014 to address prison overcrowding by reclassifying some theft and drug-related offenses as misdemeanors.
It's always interesting to see the towns with high incomes that look abandoned, and the poorer towns that are well kept. Makes you think that the numbers that the government pulls aren't corect.
It's so funny going on a rant about deprioritization of petty theft prosecutions causing crime in big cities while you're driving through a tiny town in a state that loves punishing criminals with a drastically worse crime rate. Maybe the answer is that it's not so simple as just being tough on crime makes communities safer.

What's interesting is the threshold for felony theft is $950 in California but it's much higher in Texas at $2500.
In Texas you'll be arrested, regardless. That's the difference.
@@TaterTots380 Yeah, not really. Few are actually getting arrested and that’s why it’s in the news all the time.
@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip What data supports this? "In the news all the time" doesn't mean much.
Just for information, according to Google,
In Texas, in general, it is considered a felony offense if you take any item valued at over $2,500. Any item between $2,500 and $30,000 is a state jail felony, with prison time lasting 180 days to two years. Felony theft is charged to those who take items valued between $30,000 and $150,000.Mar 12, 2024
it's got to the point that business owners are closing their businesses because of crime in LA and other big cities
Safe travels Joe & Nicole, Happy Thanksgiving
Such sad little towns. It'd be interesting to know who is committing the crimes. Prop 47 is ridiculous! I liked seeing all the cats and dogs - even the chickens. Looking forward with anticipation to seeing the next trip's videos. There should be some good eating along that route. The plantations outside of New Orleans are pretty. Stay safe and keep adventuring for us!
Thanks, gator!!
You just get what makes good content!
Thank you!!
Holy moly, that first town with a high income level 🤦♀️
Dear sir. May I know the camera you use for all your gorgeous videos pls. Your storytelling is such a nice and refreshing thing. No jump cuts no 10 thousand frame changes in a minute. It's Easy watch and sort of makes you calm.. hm
Thank you!!
Thanks for sharing, Joe. All the best from Australia.
Thanks, Richard!
I reckon there are a few of us Aussies watching. Love the work!
@@MattsScaleModels Awesome. 👍😀
I love your videos but this one is probably the most interesting one you've done ❤
Wow, thank you!
Bedroom Communities of Waco/Corsicana. Cheap land with good access to amenities. Nearby lakes are a plus!
Phenomenal episode ❤
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
Frost is probably filled with people commuting to Dallas
Hi boys just puzzled why there is no for sale signs on the buildings here in England it would be full of for sale signs keep up the good work really enjoying these ghost towns you go through all the best Mike Manchester England
Thanks, Mike!!
Happy Thanksgiving Joe and Nic 🦃
Thanks 👍
There is no respect for the law in California. Great video Joe and Nic! Thanks
With population of 600 I would imagine the crime is Saturday night fights in the local bar which repeat several weeks a year.
I have been watching your channel for some time and I love it! What site do you use to find the stats? You are the only channel I have come across that shows the stats and I find that very helpful. I am originally from Wisconsin but have been living in the Philippines for the last 6 years with my wife and our son.
The site I use is Census Reporter, which pulls the latest estimates from the U.S. Census. 😀👍
@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip Thank you! With that Census Reporter, it is what really pulled me into your channel. Keep up the great work!
Yes i think there are statistical problems when you get to towns of less than 1000. Probably need a different metric for low populatioin places.
ye, it would have been more interesting to see their actual crimefigures...I mean; it's not really fair to inflate a town of around 820 to a 100 k city.
Frost is a farming community with a lot of old money handed down over generations.
You're 1000% correct!! Unrecorded crime is rampant in California, and the out of sight out of mind politicians there field ALL THE BLAME
The streets are very clean, with no litter.
Here in California we passed Prop 36 this time around which changes elements of Prop 47.
Nice to see a peaceful video without any backtalk or smart mouth. Y'all know what I mean.
Good to see the people of California were listened to.
Yeah, we know what you mean, and no noisy, uncomfortable shoes, either.

Loved that beautiful old gas station from the golden years of gas station design hidden behind that food trailer.
Joe & Nicole, love your videos ❤. ps Cats too😺👍
It seems like at some point there will be a lot of hungry people in the big cities of California as the trend in Oakland was in your Oakland video where they are losing many of their stores.
That much income and high crime does not make sense. Thanks for the tour.
So many places like this in the US where the downtown has no function.
I live on the west coast I took a trip to Louisiana to visit a friend It sure is different found out it has the highest crime rate in Louisiana
Another interesting video. You should show the names of notable people who were born in these small towns, Wikipedia lists them.
Probably nobody.
He usually does.
It's always interesting to see the towns with high incomes that look abandoned, and the poorer towns that are well kept. Makes you think that the numbers that the government pulls aren't corect.
Prop 47 is when the authorities give up.
I’m against it. Stealing is stealing regardless of the dollar amount.
It's so funny going on a rant about deprioritization of petty theft prosecutions causing crime in big cities while you're driving through a tiny town in a state that loves punishing criminals with a drastically worse crime rate. Maybe the answer is that it's not so simple as just being tough on crime makes communities safer.
