4:04 Ah, most women wait in vain their whole lives to have a man look at them like that. And that "anyone would have done as much" would melt a heart of stone.
I just love how Sir Percy just so nonchalalntly pitches those that guy into the water and goes to the other guy and says "Would seem your friend...is in distress. To the rescue!" Soo cute!!
Oh, now I get it. Armand was unconscious, he didn't actually see the fight and how lethal Percy can be. As far as he's concerned his attackers could have ran away and Percy just found him and brought him to the inn. That's why he buys Percy's " fop " charade.
Anthony Andrews perfect for remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Jane Seymour is very good as well. Perfect remake. The set and costumes add realism as well. Ian MacKellan is wonderful to despise.
The look on Marguerite's face at 9:40 is so priceless. She looks like she is thinking "What the 'F'? Is this even the same guy I met last week?" lol I also love how at 4:00, Percy starts to act like a fop but then sees Marguerite and is like "Holy crap I just met my wife" and then acts all serious.
@@johnstephenson1533 Yeah, it's actually quite a good version too! It has many similarities in the plot, but there are differences! It starts when Percy and Marguerite are already married. Also, she says something about going to jail because the guy that got executed, was involved with her, and betrayed her!
They don’t make actors like Anthony Andrew’s anymore. He IS a masterclass. His facial choices down to how he changes the tone of his voice is completely perfect.
People say Tom Hiddleston looks like Anthony Andrews, but if you want to see a real Anthony Andrews look-a-like look up Aaron Tveit, the resemblance is eerie.
Oh god, the guy looks just like Tom Hiddleston! He has that same puppy look in his eyes. :) We know Tom loves this time period; he would be perfect at this role!
I'm writing a paper on emo culture for anthropology class. I'd like to see the expressions aristrocrates would make when coming across the generations of today. :) "Dear me, that person looks as if they had a turn of gothic implementations!" "I'm not Gothic, I'm emo!!!!" "An emu, you certainly are not." "EMO! I'm EMO YOU IDIOT!"
How can she stand to have Chauvelin touch her? He's so slimy, he just...ugh! Yes, it is Gandalf, but he does an excellent job at making one's flesh crawl.
Yes, he is a fine actor too, he plays the villian perfectly here! He's multi-talented! So is Anthony Andrews, he has played villians. Have you ever seen him as Emperor Nero in "A.D."? He played a very sadistic Nero! Also, he plays the noble knight hero, Ivanhoe in the movie of the same name. Ian McKellen plays the villian here, but plays a good-guy character Gandolf in "The Lord Of The Rings"!
Hello! Just wanted to say thank you SO much for uploading this! As a fan of the Scarlet Pimpernel ever since I was in elementary school - I can't believe that it took all these years for me to find this! I had watched the Richard.E.Grant version and didn't even think to watch the 1982 version (I now prefer this 1982 version!) Last night, my mother, son, two younger brothers, and I had a *family movie night* and watched your uploads. My mom especially was really into it. So thanks & cheers!
Many of these French citizens went to their deaths with courage and composure; but not all. Others cried, screamed, begged for their lives. Particularly the women & children. They Guillotined children during the terror? Oh, yes indeed. Did this have any effect on the blood thirsty mobs who assembled in the square each day to witness this bloody horror? it did. But not enough to elicit any significant compassion for the vitctims of this national psychosis. There was an ironic justice to this however: there were those in the crowds screaming for blood who ended up under the guillotines blade themselves. Neighbors informing on neighbors was all that was required to end up victims of the terror. No one was truly safe. not even Robespierre, the ultimate architect of this nitemare.
+YatzSliversword Word. Purely chronologically, he's about 20 years above the right age, but that's not stopping his fangirls. I would absolutely love to see Jonny Depp in this character; he'd be brilliant.
The Scarlet Pimpernel is such a wonderful movie. Every young boy wants to become like Anthony Andrews, athletic, refined, witty, adventurous, intelligent, and desired by all the girls like the Scarlet Pimpernel. Every young girl want to become like Jane Seymour, refined, beautiful, intelligent, and desirable like Marguerite St Just. Even though the Scarlet Pimpernel comes off as a bit effeminate. He is really under the façade, the ultimate gentleman. So of his lines are absolutely wonderful. like "If the invitation is from you madam, I shall make myself free." You know if that was a real situation the woman would have been more than moist.
He's a FOP! And he's talking as a landed gentleman of the Regency period! (For crying out loud -- nothing like ignorance. Read "Modern Fops" under Fop in Wikipedia. It was a common device in pulp fiction.)
Bravo that Ian can give anyone "the creeps". He does it so well. And snuff as well as other aromatics were helpfull to disguise the ever pressent stench in london by coal smoke and dust and open sewers.
There have been some casting suggestions for a remake, my own choice for Percy might be unpopular (I'm Aussie, and therefore biased ;P) but... how about Hugh Jackman? He has proven he can do both foppish/campy and action roles, plus he could sing some of the songs from the musical production
@@marchess7420 also too old (he's 39, Sir Percy in The Scarlet Pimpernel stated to be around 30 years old). Henry Cavill would be good; slightly less old, he has the height, impressive physique under the pretty clothes, loads of charisma, would be fun to watch him act a secretly-clever-fool, could handle plenty of daring action rescue scenes, rides horses, and The Witcher proved he could go blonde :P
I can fully understand both men and women falling in love with Erik. But Marguerite being in love with Chaveluin? Seriously? Uncle Ian never should have agreed to play this part.
its suprising the English aristocracy would save the French aristocracy. one would think that English nobles would be drooling over all the suddenly vacant aristocratic lands in France! and since France was unstable, it was ripe for a lightning strike invasion! all that land gained then later lost after Agincourt could have been regained!!
@acerb45666555 Actually, English nobles were terrified of the French revolution. The murdering attitudes and actions could have carried over at any time.
"If the invitation is from you madam, I shall make myself free." Men, guys, boys, fellows, please take note. This is the way to charm a lady.

Shaughnessy Howell and he just throw a guys gun and say " yours I believe." Like it's nothing even happens lol 😂

"Snift snift,AMEN"
Lol!
That's my favorite part! 🤣👏Sniff, snuff, AMEN! 😂

Marguerite's lines on stage are from Racine's Phaedra - "I call upon you now, avenge my wrong, your favours will be measured by your rage!"
I so wish they made movies like this now.Anthony Andrews is simply the best in these type of movies.
I was sooooo in love with Anthony Andrews after this movie....
If they'd do a remake of this movie, Tom Hiddleston would be a perfect Sir Percy...
Richard E Grant did a remake. I haven't found it to watch it though. I've heard it's good, although I don't usually like him.
The original was made in 1934, I have seen it on RUclips
I've seen that one. Still want to see Grant's. Thanks though! :)
Ya know? Now that you mention it.... that sounds amazing.

AW his eyes COMPLETELY changed when he saw her :)
Words cannot express how perfect it would be if they make a new movie of The Scarlet Pimpernel and Tom Hiddleston was cast as Percy.
Personally, I see him more as Chauvelin. But maybe I'm just used to seeing him as the villain.
how excellent an idea. sink me you are brilliant Sir! let us write to his website
I'm actually a "ma'am", but thank you! Haha! Tom is definitely my "dream cast role" for that part.

Anthony Andrews is so great!
Yeah, that "amen" is classic.
Note how every entrance of Sir Percy is accompanied by harpsichord chords. Quite angelic.
Oh God, Armand... I never pictured him to be so young while I was reading the book. He's gorgeous...!

Julianne Hannes Very true! Though, on different sides haha!

T'would seem your friend; he is in distress. To the rescue!
Sink me! was an English curse, especially popular amoung sailors. Short for "Sink me to the devil!"
Sir Percy saying “Amen” is my new happy place to think of!!
The way he says “ yours I believe “ right before he throw the pistol 😂😂
Percy has such class :D
Suh Perseh Blakenehhh.
Oddly I'm more into Chauvelin
leslie howard's been through my mind for the whole movie :)
Love that version also😍
I'm surprised that Hollywood hasn't remade this movie yet...If casted properly it be wonderful.

Yes she does have the most perfect features!! Never noticed it before.. knew she was very pretty but here, perfection!
Young Gandalf in this movie as the bad guy.
Odd's fish? Sink me? What? I remember talking like this in fifth grade (97) and all the kids thought I was strange, lol
"It seems your friend......is in distress......" hahahaha....
You know who would make a great Percy? Johnny Depp.

They don't have such charizma nowadays.
Wait---WHAT? Percy and Marguerite weren't married in here?
Am I the only person who think Anthony Andrews looks like Tom Hiddleston here?
So happy to have found this. I still remember watching it in school around 1986 and missed some due to being out sick.

Sink meh, there once was a time when Ian McKellen was young (...ish)! :D
Some of his expressions are actually kind of "cute". I didn't think I'd ever say that about Ian McKellen.
"he must be an angel in disguise" - "amen" lol
Dear lord!! Chauvelin is....MAGNETO!!!! I never knew!!
He is also Gandalf!!!!
percy is bad ass he's awesome
I'm so happy this movie is up here-- no matter where I look, I can't find it to buy. Thank you
THANK YOU SO MUCH I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS VERSION FOR YEARS

How odd, that Marguerite would be reading Thesus' part in Phaedra.
It always starts " as a noble enterprise ". But it always ends with the NKVD knocking on your door in the middle of the night.
Way before the days of Ian McKellens' Magneto. :)

Is it just me, or was anyone else thoroughly irritated at the way Sir Percy speaks in society? I've gotten used to it but it was horrid at first.
Wow young gandalf
@redrosestoo It's not the tone that bothered me, it was the way he split his sentences into parts. I do understand what you mean though
I like this movie, but the camera work needed to be better. It's too close to the actors' faces. Gives me a headache if I sit too close to the screen.
@acerb45666555 Actually, English nobles were terrified of the French revolution. The murdering attitudes and actions could have carried over at any time.
@DefenderOfEnglish
Dammit, I'm sick of all these foreign superheroes sneaking over here and stealing derring-do from American crime fighters!
Gandalf! Someone is showing youth. Ian McKellan was a wee bit younger. I look at him playing Gandalf and say "Chauvlin."
poor chauvilin...if jacob black was evil and a cowerd, this might be what twilight would be.
Anthony Andrews looks like Dirk Bogarde's (A Tale of two Cities) twin.
He sounds like Antoine sans the s.s.s.stammer, lol, Anthony Andrews peeps, you'll know what I mean.
@shorecallssea not more disgusting than cigarettes..
@ChristandI45 Snuff, was very common in those days :) Thats how people took tobacco before cigarettes
