I'm one of the Old Guys who didn't make it to the concerts of the P's, hence my presence. Bootsy's blending of elecs and design of his bass is the secret. He is not complicated in his riffs, but soulful in his touch. You young'uns can do it too. Elecs are octave pedal, delay pedal, and amp reverb all timed JUST RIGHT. I wont tell you the timing, let ya'll learn it yourselves. Keep on Rockin in the Free World and thanks to gyatv for bringing me back to the Funk.
i seen Bootsy twice up in colo. mid 90's he can throwdown on the killer solos, i was in awe just watching him(only 10' away) play his heart out BOOTZILLA ROCKS!!!
aw man, this solo brings out so much emotion, it's unbelievable how much Bootsy and his bass work together to put a solo as meaningful as this together, I honestly can't say I've heard another song or solo that sounded this deep. Keep funkin it up Bootsy!
Hendrix drew on old blues and funk and was definitely in the heart of the start of 70s funk. You can see it written all over Band of Gypsies. Had he lived on I can see Hendrix possibly having something similar to a P Funk style larger band. He said he was almost done with guitar and ready to do more complicated compositions. He was scheduled to meet with Gill Evans a few days after he died... thats the guy who did Sketches of Spain and Birth of the Cool with Miles Davis... woulda been so epic.
oh my God he is sooooo awesome! i luv him on the low bass sound that he starts with. and i luv the way he moves! like he is one with the guitar! damn!!!! yes!
You can go to every amazing bass player out there. Victor wooten, marcus miller, cliff burton, john entwistle, stanley clarke, larry ghram, james jamerson, flea, geddy lee, lemmy, les claypool any one of them. This here was magic. So much soul. More soul then all of these guys put togather. Bootsy may use effects but give his settings to any one of these guys and it won't be the same. Bootsy Collins is one of a kind.
maybe i didnt make myself very clearer in my first comment but i think he is amazing. let me correct myself, WHATS AMAZING IS HOW HE USES SUCH EFFECTS AND REALLY GETS INTO IT, PITTY NOWADAYS HARDLY ANY BASS PLAYERS FOCUS ON FEEL. As in image well its jsut an image, he gave a new look to the bass, a new funky ideology.
Well said. You can tell Bootsy is really into this. Right there no one is on the same planet as he is. Keep funkin Bootsy. This joint is tight. Anyone know if this is on DVD?
Thanks. I didn't check for a date on this vid and didn't know if it's before or after Glen Goins passing. Just a little aside note: I played in a funk band during the 80's called The Funktion Freeks and we were in the Parliament/Gap Band/Rick James mode. Our guitar player would sometimes come onstage in a clear plastic suit (yes, you read that right!) with nothing underneath but a pair of tighty whiteys. Wish I could find some pictures of that.
I don't agree, he'd be lucky to make the top five but we should be grateful for the vibrancy he brought to the JB's sound and beyond. Thanks for the good times, BC!
@theManTCBflash The guy is the background is Gary Shider, who has been an important member (vocals/guitar/writer) of Parliament-Funkadelic and many of the off shoot groups since the early 1970s. He, uh, often wears a diaper on stage.
Okay folks, I couldn't take it any longer and had to comment. This is Boosty. He played with James Brown and all the groups George Clinton created (Parliment/Funkadelic/P-Funk All Stars/Parlet). His hey-day was during the heat of the funk era. No, he's not Wooten, Clarke or Johnson or Graham, but he was known for being a pocket bassist and using effects. Please educate yourself on FUNK. There are millions from the 70's. Get your Google on folks.
kids? im just 14 and luv funk! dont categorize all kids as people who like indie or R n B i luv this type of music! but i do agree that most kids like music which is re adjusted by computers bootsy will alwase have a place in my heart
I'm with JAZZYSNAPS! All these little punks on RUclips just saying "this one rules" and "that one sucks." I'm just spellbound by the availability of information and glimpses into the soul of live music players in these videos. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * jazzysnaps - Good to see some one actually knows their stuff, rather than the usual stupid know nothing comments on utube.
i play the guitar a little bit of the bass and drums as well and i couldnt agree with you more its all about the feel its not how many notes you hit and how fast (which is what some people think determines the best guitarist or bassist) it is knowing when to play them
man bootsy is the best if not one of the best you can take all of the updated acoustics from him and he will still rick it funky give credit where credit is due
OHHH Yea! I was talkin more about the Buckethead thing, which I do like him, but as far as Bootsy goes?? Shit. Could you imagine if Bootsy and Hendrix had played together?? The world of music would have died then and there because NOBODY would ever be able to match that kind of playing. Keep rockin man!!
Joe & Steve! They may be good, but Bootsy Collins is"THE"Best Bass Player of all time....He's been around for over 40 plus yrs.ASK ANY OLD ROCKER!!!!!!!!!
Back in the days the main effects to get these sounds were the Mutron pedals. The closest thing I can think of from todays tech to get the best sounds would be the Roland Multieffects Bass pedal. I don't know the exact model number right off hand, but in my opinion that's the best you're going to get unless you invest in all the original old school gear, which is gonna cost you a lot.
Wow what kind of effects do I need to nail that sound at the very beginning? I know there's a wah and a delay there, but not what kind of wah. I don't dig the fuzz that much but obviously Bootsy does xD. So much feeling there...
Bootsy is god on bass, his music isnt about how perfect you can play your song, bootsy playes every note from his heart.

Man! This is what you call "Making love to the music!" That foreplay, rise, climax, and cool down was something serious!!! Bootsy baby!
That is the most intense playing of electric bass I have ever seen.
I fear the day when artist like this aren't around anymore!I'm collecting as much vintage funk as I can!!
i seen Bootsy twice up in colo. mid 90's
he can throwdown on the killer solos, i was in awe just watching him(only 10' away) play his heart out BOOTZILLA ROCKS!!!
That is quite possibly the coolest-looking instrument I have ever seen. Bootsy is awesome!
aw man, this solo brings out so much emotion, it's unbelievable how much Bootsy and his bass work together to put a solo as meaningful as this together, I honestly can't say I've heard another song or solo that sounded this deep.
Keep funkin it up Bootsy!
I totally just made out to this video!! Thank you Bootsy!!!
He is freaking epic with those effects. I've never heard them used so effectively.
And to think, I found this guy because of Old Gregg. =P
so much feeling, love it

I don't think he'll ever die. Funk has a way of keeping you going

Ahh yeah...
There will never be a day in which I listen to this and think to myself, "I've heard this too many times."
he isnt hiding! look at him, he's putting his soul right out infront of the crowd! he is everything he plays
That is Gary Shider. He is a member of P-Funk. Basically the greatest Funk Rock band ever.
