My father was treated like trash coming back to the states during Vietnam. 8 years ago he passed, I'm sure he finally got the welcome home that he deserved..🇺🇸💪🏻
Was commissioned in 1976 and the first time in my uniform at an airport, a man spit at me. I told him, "That's okay, If it comes to it, I will die for you too."
Unfortunately back then we weren't near as good as separating the soldier from the war as (I'd like to think, anyway) that we are now.

I was born in 1963. Growing up in the early 70's, the news wasn't running 24/7 on several different channels and kids weren't allowed to hang out in the middle of adult conversations. So i was in my upper teens before I knew about the viet Nam war. The way the soldiers were treated when they came home, it broke my heart! I'm not from a military family, but I was raised to honor and respect soldiers and veterans. May God bless them all and their families!❤
Went to fight in Iraq in 2001 when I was 18 years old. I was just a kid. I left as a pissed off kid. Came back a humbled, legless man. This song always makes me cry cause i still till this day can not imagine how my mother felt. Im first generation American. Both my parents are from Mexico and they couldn't understand why I wanted to go and give my life for my country. I am a proud American and I would do it again a million times over.
Thanking you for your service is totally inadequate, but I wanted to acknowledge your sacrifice and as a mom I can relate to what you said. You are a brave soul.

I am sure the phrase "thank you for your service!" Seems like just something to say to a vet, but from the daughter of a Vietnam vet and knowing the price freedom really cost!

I am an Army Veteran as well. Having deployed to Afghanistan, we had to write a letter to our loved one in case we were killed in action (KIA) or mised in action (MIA). Thankfully, all personnel in my unit returned home safely and we got to destroy our letters. I kind of wish I had kept mine but at the time it was a morbid thought. I have since retired after serving 37 years and would definitely do it all over again. Thank you for playing and listening to this.

yeah, if I remember correctly, there was a banner or something that said "Gold Star Families". I had a hard enough time not bawling like a baby through this song but when that happened.... oh the dam broke and the tears flowed like a waterfall. How in the world Tim got through this song, and Alan Jackson got through his first live performance of "Where Were You" is beyond me.
Oh, I did not know this. Now I'll cry even harder every time I hear it.
@sebs, this song was written about a “death letter” that was found on a computer that was sent home after Cpl Jeffery Starr was killed in Ramadi Iraq. I served with him.

@William yes he wrote letters in case he died while underway. He would write what he was feeling.. alot of service members did this.

A friend's father passed 8 years ago. After he came home from Nam, he worked tirelessly thru the VFW for Vets and other worthy causes. Although his highest rank was Sargent, the VFW gave him a 21-gun salute and a lonely F16 did an unofficial spectacular fly over. I never seen a sendoff like that before or after.
It's long been the practice for men going into a war zone to write a letter that will only be delivered if they are killed. Imagine having to write that letter over & over for multiple deployments. My father brought his letter home to my mother at the end of WWII & they read it & burned it together. 27 years in the army, he wrote a number of them but as far as I know that's the only one my mom ever got to read. Thank God.
I love the line where he sang "tell my dad I don't regret following in his shoes". For many military service is the family business or tradition. While it was true of my father and brothers we didn't know our family history. My dad was orphaned at a young age and know one I knew from the family seemed to know anything about our ancestry. I"ve done the research and was stunned by much of what I learned about my dad's family tree. Turned out the military tradition runs deep in the family. Part of my roots predate the Revolution in America that in itself was humbling, but to learn I had great grandfathers, great Uncles, and cousins who served every time there was a need .... so yeah patriotic songs, tribute and thanks to military grab me and pull me in. On behalf of many Sebs we're glad you chose to join us here and to become a citizen. Personally I have the utmost respect for those who come here legally and then work to become a citizen - I recognize it takes dedication to prepare for the exam and that in some ways it may be deeply emotional to put your original citizenship to the side (not behind). You seem to be a loving father and husband, hard working, and caring towards others the type of person I wish all Americans were. It'a joy to see you with Ali because your love for each other is so beautiful. Thank for your heartfelt respect for our military.
William. Your coment is spot on. I am a vet and so was my mother my father my brother and my sister. At 56 I will still take up my rifle and stand with you brother. God bless you and yours and every vet and those who are serving. Stand your post.
When my son was in the Army, pretty much every solider has some version of this letter, for their wife or parent or girfriend, just in case. Tim did an awesome job with this song and I've seen it take down quite a few Veterans who react to it. Great reaction. ❤

My grandfather served as a Marine during WW2 in the pacific theater. My Marine father was in Viet Nam and I joined the Marines after high school. Very much a family tradition but more so a very strong sense of duty and commitment to this country and its people. Sebs your patriotism rings strong. So many people here,not having lived anywhere else. Don’t understand just how amazing our home is. Thank you for you heart. Ali is a gem treasure her always!

I was a US Navy Hospital Corpsman (FMF). Served 1986-1996. Last 5 years I was in charge of my command's Color Guard. Since then I have been doing military funeral details. Done more than I care to remember. This song came out around the same time my very small town suffered our lone casualty. One of my son's best friends and my friend's only son. Married just 3 weeks. Sergeant in the Marines. It was a long time before I could listen to this in it's entirety. Still hits hard.

We all wrote these lasts letters to our loved ones. It's one of the hardest letters you'll ever write. It's was so funny that the letter effected me in that I knew the pain that my family would feel, and hope that at the same time it would bring them some comfort and pride.
I am 3rd generation military. My grandfather served in the Navy during WWI and WWII and was a POW who survived the Bataan Death March. My father was an Air Force officer and I served in the Army. I was bless to be born a Southerner, a military brat, and an American. I met and married the love of my life, who was also in the Army and who had two great uncles who died on the USS Arizona. Our country is worth dying for, even now.

I was a soldier for 14 years every time i was deployed almost all of us that were outside the wire wrote these letters to our loved ones so the could get a last good by and hear us tell them we loved them one last time, maybe even help them move on. I always loved this song as I could never say near as well in my letters.
This song reminds me of my death letter I made for my family that my best friend on my army team kept but I ended up having to give his letter to his wife and mother...Plato said it best about us combat troops...'Only the dead see the end of war'
Before they are shipped out. Military personnel have to write letters to their families saying good bye. My sister had her letter to her kids published in a book of poems.

As a Retired Combat Veteran, I have written more than one of these "Just in Case" Letters...... It is a sombering thing to write/make a will under the age of 21.......
As a Parent of a recently retired Army Sergeant and a Deployed Navy Officer on a Destroyer , tears my heart out! It means they may not come Home and it was what Family and Friends left behind deal with daily. 🇺🇸👍🏽🤙🏽😎
Don't forget this song is about the last letter written by a fallen soldier and another soldier carried it home to his family.
This song is so prolific tonight, made me cry. I’m about 2 hours from Fort Campbell, Kentucky Army Base to my home in north west Tennessee. We’re very patriotic and have so much respect for each and every soldier there, tragically we lost 9 of them Wednesday in a Black Hawk helicopter crash. Our love and prayers go out to each family who lost their loved one and their brothers and sisters they served with. God bless each of them. ❤️&🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I can’t ever watch or listen to this song without crying. As a soldier, and as a man who has lost two brothers at a young age, this song always hits me hard.
I've had a rough life, been a construction worker my whole life and I full weep when those children see their daddys and mommys coming home from deployment. More so since I had my own kids. It's beautifully heart wrenching.
I’m not from the USA but from the neighbouring country Canada, and thank you to all the vets that have served, my late grandfather served and when he passed away they had soldiers come to our small community of under 1000 and they honoured him, the salutes and gun fire was absolutely amazing 🤙🏾👍🏾

Since WWI soldiers were encouraged to write a goodbye letter and keep it on their person to be found if their bodies were retrieved. My grandfathers both had one, in WWI and WWII respectively. My dad wrote several, during Korea and two Nam tours. Thankfully none were delivered to us, they all made it home. As an Army kid, this makes me cry every time. I spent most of my childhood dreading two officers at our door handing this letter to Mom.

The families standing behind him of loved ones lost in war..i cry whenever i hear this song.The men in our family have served since WW 1..and my son is a police officer. Proud of them all.
It hits real. I lost allot of good friends. This song broke me also. Lost a great friend, NCO, and soldier under me. When I had to inventory his equipment to send back. There was a picture of his son inside his helmet. This song brought back that memory.
Be gad you were not around during the Vietnam War. They used to show on TV all the fallen coming home each day. They also scrolled the fallen’s name and ages. I was very young, but it was burned into my brain. 😢
My Mom just came to visit and help watch the kids for Spring Break. And she brought me my Grandfathers Army photo and my Dads Vietnam “ Honorable Discharge “ papers and medals from both of them . Special treat and so many emotions involved. Lost my Dad my senior year of High School back in 1995. He is buried in the same cemetery as my Grandpa / his Dad about 40yrds apart 🙏🏼🇺🇸
My grandfather was a retired marine and my grandmother was in the coast guard as well as my mom. I feel so proud to come from such a long line of strong individuals.
This is a very powerful song. Fortunately everyone in our family made it back home, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam. Thanks to all now serving, those who have, and those who will in the future. FLY NAVY!!!

I had three grandparents fight in WW2, my grandmother also served in Korea as a Captain. One grandfather drove a tank in Germany under General Patton. One grandfather was a Pearl harbor survivor. My father was a Marine in 1969 when I was born. To many others to list .My family loves our veterans and our country. God bless AMERICA 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Tim and Faith did a few songs together. It’s Your Love is probably one of the most iconic. Faith Hill did a rendition of “Where Are You Christmas” that will blow you away! Honestly any of her songs are golden. You won’t be disappointed
July 2010- sitting in my cousins apartment and talking. She was deploying in a month. This song comes on. We’re both crying and she writes it down in her funeral requests. There’s so much emotion that happens before they even leave.
I deployed during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. All of us in my unit had a letter like this. There difficult to write, but not as hard as reading them. Luckily, all of us made it home, but my little brother died in Beirut in 1883, and I got a letter from him a couple weeks after he was killed.

My son graduated high school May 28 of 2005, turned 18 on June 11 and left for boot camp on June 18. He did his first Iraq tour when he was 19. Before they left for Iraq, they had to write their wills.
If the phone or doorbell rang, I was a basket case. It’s still hard thinking about it. He’s now married with three beautiful daughters. He’s in law enforcement now, so this mama is never relaxed.

My family has been in every War since WW2.Thank you My Grandpa got aPurple Heart in WW2 Uncle was in Vietnam Cousins Nephews Gulf War..I signed up for the Draft at the Post Office.Turn 18 3 months after 9/11 😢

I was a single mom when I left my 3 year old to deploy to the Middle East. These songs hit me right in the feels every time.
This song was written by, the Warren Brothers, along with Tim McGraw. The Warren Brothers also co-wrote, Red Solo Cup. They are cousins of friends of mine.
I am a 21 year vet I deployed to Iraq in desert storm where I lost my mother to cancer left the military in 93 but I always felt I was missing something out of my life felt lost I rejoined military on national gaurd side married 3 boys at.a very young age to go back to Iraq I missed graduations birthdays and anniversarys i came home and deployed agian to Poland for a NATO mission where i spent 18 months so my wife would have insurance to cover cancer treatments that she held back from me until it was to late she passed away 6 months after my return
Solders are soldiers we are programmed to be tough it's the families that we leave behind that are stronger than us they make us tough always remember that thank you for your support

My baby boy served 6 years. 2 deployments overseas. Im so grateful to God that he made it home. However he is 70 percent disabled. This song makes me cry so hard.
I remember my mom reading letters from my father during the Korean conflict but she would skip parts. I remember fondly the times dad would surprise at school when he was home. ❤

Old fourth generation disabled vet, with TBI and PTSD, existing under a VA program for homeless vets so yeah this one hits hard for me.
You should check out Home Free’s cover of “Traveling Soldier”. It’s originally done by the Chicks, but the guys redid a portions of it to make it from a woman’s point of view. Another one to watch with Ali. Thanks!
The childhood song you are referring to is The Armed Services Medley. It's not a kids song but one that is often played whenever there is a crowd of mixed branches celebrating patriotism.. it is such a great sight to see and be a part of.

I’m a former Army attack helicopter pilot with combat experience. I put my family and friends through hell wondering if I would come home. I did…many friends didn’t…thank you for this reaction.
Tim was on a plane reading an article about the goodbye letters soldiers write before they go off to war and was inspired to write this. Him and co-writers whipped it up pretty quick. There is no video you are correct because his album was already released when they wrote it and he was to perform at the ACMs and sing his single from the album. He sang this instead and this performance is THE only recorded version.
Ohhhh! Please do any live performance of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill! The chemistry between them is so intense!
there is a video to this-- it shows the soldier , his family, Arlington National Cemetery- and the family receiving the flag-- its a creator video, not official , but it follows the storyline perfectly. The song was popular over a decade ago in the midst of the war with the middle East, as all soldiers are required to write these letters -- just in case they aren't fortunate enough to come home.
As a combat veteran, when we were activated we would basically train our minds to expect not to make it home. We would joke or talk about not making it so we weren’t thinking of it while in combat.
My son had to write these letters every time he deployed; he said it was really hard.

I know you don't need my 'welcome,' but you have it. I also want to say I think your patriotism is a breath of fresh air. Our country is going through such a tough time now, with people who don't value the freedom our ancestors got for us and the fact that good men and women continue to try to protect us every day. It's heartwarming to see that you value the promise of what this country can be.

Oh man, i hadn't heard this in a while, thank you for your reactions to this. My husband retired 3 years ago after 30 years in the USMC, 4 tours of combat and missing 2 of our children's births. This song always makes me cry, always. We were so fortunate and lucky that he finally got to watch our youngest child born between tour 3 and 4 and she will graduate hs this year. So much love to all the gold star families out there!

I am a proud Army Brat and my dad served 24 yrs. before retiring. Sadly we lost him to cancer when he was 44 due to Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam. Also my first and present husband served in the Marine Corps. The men and women who serve are a very special group and I am so thankful for each and every one of them.
