    perfection from RF. Serve, volley, rallies, passing shots, defensive shots. All court attacking tennis.

    Historic win for Federer, Djokovic was in the form for a Grand Slam that year and it took Federer to stop his winning run of 43 matches.
    Great performance.

    incredible match between these two. I remember watching it on television. You could really tell that these two players were on a mission. One of the most enjoyable matches I've seen in the last 10 years. Body language says it all.

    What an incredible match! Probably my fav Fed match ever, considering the how huge this match was in terms of Fed breaking Djokers ~44 match winning streak but some ridiculous tennis! The variety and finesse of Federer's game is just stunning

      Ethan Harris Such a waste. He was playing the best clay court tennis of his career in those two weeks. Good enough to beat rafa, even, but finding a way to lose that first set reset their dynamic to normal. i.e. rafa bullying and fed scrambling. He was very close to ultimate glory at this tournament. Can you imagine, ending peak djokovic winning streak then beating rafa at the french? Fed would have been deified for that.

    If only Roger had won the final after this. I feel like that might have enabled him to win a few more slams than just the one at Wimbledon in 2012, and it would have without any question cemented his position as the greatest of all time.

  • @kjartanize

    This is the highest level of tennis Roger has ever played on clay. PeRFection!

    • @911801111801
      @911801111801 9 лет назад

      kjartanize Not really. Federer played better than this in the 2006 Rome Master Series final against Nadal; unluckily for him, he was up against the greatest player on clay courts of all time in his prime; and that's how it went.

    • @Messi106165
      @Messi106165 9 лет назад

      +David Marcano Salcedo Not comparing how Federer played in 2006 and in this match. But at least he didn't choke here, which is why this seems the highest level of tennis Roger has played on clay. That mental choke against Nadal happened in most occasions on clay which cost him lots of titles.

    • @kjartanize
      @kjartanize 9 лет назад

      It's tough to say when Nadal was playing his best tennis on clay for obvious reasons. Wether it was 2006 or 2011 he was consistantly beating everyone, but I do believe that if Federer had played at this level in the final he would've beaten Nadal.

    • @Messi106165
      @Messi106165 9 лет назад

      kjartanize Maybe if Fed did he might have beaten Nadal in 2011, but you can't underestimate Nadal's defence on RG Court 1. Plus Fed's mental horror to Nadal usually erodes his levels no matter how good he was playing that tournament. Nadal's spin to Fed's backhand is just a counteract and I would say it was that which prevented Fed's highest level rather than Fed dropped his level a lot in the final.

    • @crocr
      @crocr 9 лет назад

      +James Leung Hon Yin I think Federer of 2006/2007 would have a better chance against Nadal of 2011-2014 because Nadals speed and defense back in those days was just insane. Nadal in 2011-2014 was a little slower but made up for it with a better serve and forehand which is why he had more success on other surfaces during that period but was also losing more matches on clay.

    Back when federers forehand was still hit flat and with pace. And when he used the tactic to draw djokovic to the net and pass him instead of these suicidal net approaches of a spin ball half court to djokos backhand. Uuuugh, tennis isnt getting better nowadays.

    • @GameOvais
      @GameOvais 8 лет назад

      +lammie001 Back when Djokovic had no serve or 2nd serve. As well as Federer played here, he got battered in the final. If Djokovic was in the final, at least it would have been competitive. Perhaps he should have done himself and his fans a favor by allowing a more equipped opponent to face Nadal.

      @GameOvais 8 лет назад

      "You're just a hater". Wow how original. The reality is Fed is Nadal's bitch and has always been. At least with Novak has a weapon to counter and often destroy Nadal with, Fed has nothing to hurt Nadal. That is why Novak has a positive H2H vs Nadal and Fed has a significantly inferior H2H. Age has nothing to do with it by the way because early on the age gap was in Fed's favour and now it's in their favour.

  • @parsapd5

      +prasanna s Nadal on clay and Nadal on RG clay can make a huge difference especially in the centre court. Djokovic's knees were not a 100% and a 5 setter with Fed would have tolled him.

      +Football expert for the Gowdall Gazette But as we saw this year, Djokovic can beat Nadal at RG when he has the mental edge in their rivalry, and he sure as hell had Nadal mentally in 2011. Beat him in 2 clay finals leading to the event. Im 90% sure Federer saved Nadal here.

    With this win Federer reached his 5th French open final. In the meantime, he reached the finals of AO and US open 5 and 6 times respectively. To me this shows that Federer wasn't that bad on clay but actually a top notch player even on clay. Rather it was the impossible Nadal on clay that made it seem that Federer wasn't that good on clay.

    • @kjartanize
      @kjartanize 9 лет назад

      +Thanos Sofroniou If the only player you can't beat on clay is Nadal, doesn't that make you the second greatest clay court player of all time?? Something to think about indeed.

    • @XxMaplerzxX
      @XxMaplerzxX 9 лет назад +1

      +kjartanize Of his generation, maybe, but certainly not all time. Even though, Djokovic has showed he's better on clay (I know he hasn't won RG but to his credit he's actually beat Nadal at RG) and will get RG one day.

    • @89Pleasek
      @89Pleasek 9 лет назад

      +XxMaplerzxX
      Djokovic beat Nadal when Nadal was a shadow of his former self. Until 2014 Djokovic was getting handled at the FO by Nadal as much as Federer was. The only difference is that in 2015 Federer can't take advantage of Nadal's demise because he is old himself. Djokovic on the other hand is in his prime.

    • @XxMaplerzxX
      @XxMaplerzxX 9 лет назад +1

      +89Pleasek until 2014? really now??? did you forget 2013? Djokovic up a break in the fifth, hits a volley winner but touches the net before the ball bounces twice so he loses the point. Had he not touched the net he would have been a double break in front and would quite likely have won.

    • @89Pleasek
      @89Pleasek 9 лет назад

      XxMaplerzxX
      That wasn't for a double break. Besides, just because Djokovic came close once doesn't prove anything, he went 0-6 vs Nadal at the FO until this year when Nadal has been shit.

    I know y'all Fedfans will hate me for saying this, but they made the balls faster in 2011 RG.
    Which makes this less of a shock, eh? ;)

    • @c3vzn
      @c3vzn 8 лет назад

      +Caleb Pereira Conveniently leaving out that the balls bounced higher too. Federer struggles with high bounce, especially on the backhand side.

    • @CalebPereira9123
      @CalebPereira9123 8 лет назад +1

      Balls bounce high on clay anyway, and no, lighter Babolat balls bounce *faster* than your average one. Where do you get your science from? Federer uses more topspin than Novak anyway, so it helps him more.
      You're also ignoring the advantage Federer prefers from the lighter ball experiencing less air-drag on the ball, which is the main cause for speed differences, and not the coefficient of restitution or friction of the court.
      Federer's an aggressor, and prefers the ball moving faster than a defender (like Novak and Rafa) would prefer.
      Of course, Novak also gains the advantage of a faster shot, but the ball-change benefits Federer more, whose main weapons are top-spin, and higher-average-shot-speed from the serve and forehand.

    • @c3vzn
      @c3vzn 8 лет назад +3

      Caleb Pereira Trying way too hard buddy. Djokovic said the balls bounced higher too: www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-05-22/new-french-open-balls-by-babolat-bring-complaints-from-novak-djokovic.html.
      And I didn't ignore the advantage of the quicker ball, I pointed out you ignoring the high bounce disadvantage.

    • @CalebPereira9123
      @CalebPereira9123 8 лет назад +1

      Maybe you should have tried harder... ;)
      Yeah, maybe the harder balls, and sun-baked courts that year helped the bounce, which would favour Nadal (who is not even on topic)...
      But...
      Guess who puts more top-spin on the ball between Federer and Djokovic, and hence gains the most from the ensuing bounce?
      The answer is the big-nosed guy.
      I'm sure you're smart enough to realize who.
      *And that's just one factor*.
      The bigger factor is the drag through the air, and since Federer is the pace-generator i.e. he puts more speed on his shots on average than Novak (Serve, Forehand), he gains the most from a reduced-drag factor on a less-heavy, faster ball.
      The less-heavy, harder Babolat ball augments these two factors, and it favours Federer more, by his own admission.
      sports.ndtv.com/french-open/features/173872-new-ball-at-roland-garros-causes-a-stir
      Federer: _"The ball probably _*_helps me_*_ as it is quite fast.."_
      Federer, being hypobolic with his "probably".
      It helps him, period. He's the better server among the two, and the better striker, so it's a no-brainer really.
      Look what Isner (a big server) did to Nadal that year, something Federer has never been able to:
      Took 2 sets off the King.
      With Nadal-Federer, the issue is much more even, as the spin+bounce would help Nadal, and yet, the speed would help Federer.
      That's why I'm commenting here, and not on the 2011 RG Final video. ;)

    • @charmeleon10
      @charmeleon10 8 лет назад +2

      +Caleb Pereira Bro, I honestly think you're going way too far with this xd The faster ball does benefit the "big-nosed guy" (I don't think anyone needs to be smart to realize this nonsense) and c3vzn did not say the opposite. He just pointed out another factor that comes into play with this ball. They bounce higher. And you know why Federer loses to Nadal all the time. He did end up losing to Nadal in the final, and this ball could've either helped him or his opponents on his way to the final, cause they could use the higher bounce to their advantage. In the end, Federer outplayed every single opponent to get to the final, including Djokovic.
      Why do "fans" nowadays simply choose one or two players to support and bash everyone else at every chance with every possible argument? I swear this type of fans didn't exist 7-8 years ago and the tennis community nowadays is shit, nothing compared to what is was a few years back.

      Crisu Cris I didnt say he could always play like this. Even before that match no one ever thought Fed could win. My point is when he could play like this, which is not even to his peak level at 2006, Djokovic does not stand a chance.
      and also Fed only lost to prime Rafa at RG prior to 2009 so he did not suddenly play inspired tennis to win RG
