I was there as a 15 year old with my Dad and 2 Sturt supporters and a Norwood supporter who always believed they'd win. Was a fantastic final and having lived in the UK for the last 30+ years it is great to see this game again and all the old coaches etc. I was a Central Districts supporter for my sins and left SA before they finally won the title. As Rob says below it is a shame that the big teams moved to the AFL and destroyed the South Australian game.
i was there , 10yo , my first season supporting Norwood.. great day that still brings joy when speaking to Sturt fans in 2023... its a grand old flag...
@MU FC No argument there, but Aussie Rules is the major football code I grew up with, and love. I appreciate soccer also (Derby County). I believe there's room for both codes.
I will never forget it. My first GF. Sturt supporters complain about the mark paid to Gallagher but Sturt had heaps of chances to win the game. Sturt had an awesome team but they kicked 26 points....Norwood were nearly 5 goals down at 3/4 time...What a game.....
I was behind the goals , level with where and within 30 metres of Phil Gallagher. He marked the ball cleanly, spun in the air horizontal to the ground and landed flat with his arms between the ball and the ground. I’d been a REDLEGS supported since 1968 when I arrived in South Australia as a 5 year old. That was one of the greatest games of football I’ve ever seen in my life to this day. Sturt supporters seem to forget that Phil still had to kick the goal, and did! Great effort under enormous pressure. It’s a Grand old flag it’s a high flying flag.......👍👍👍👍👍🤓
Sorry mate, but even the umpire that paid that mark has called it a terrible decision. I don't believe that it cost Sturt the game though. Poor kicking was to blame for that.
1) Norwood is the only senior team in any code that has won a Centenary Flag. 2) Also the first to win 6 Flags in a row. 3) The first to a GF in the Final 5 setup from 5th; 1980; against Port. 4) The first to win a GF from 5th; again Port. 5) The first non-Victorian team to inflict a defeat on a Victorian team. 6) The first Champions of Australia As of yesterday they now have 31 Flags. Only Port Adelaide and East Freo have more.
If we had kicked straight, it would have been over at 3 quarter time. Bad kicking is bad football. I agree that it was a terrible decision to pay the mark to Gallagher, but that was not what cost us the game.
@@darrenjpeters also what cost us was that game against North Melbourne instead of a week off. We lost Gary Hardeman in that game he would have been critical in that GF.

Back when football was exciting. WHY did we ever destroy the local product to join the clinical crap of the AFL. Thanks Port!

@@darrenjpeters as did Gallagher himself. I met him a few years back and he admitted points blank it should not have been paid.
