I brought this exact train set in 1973, age of 7 for $20 at a mall in Portland, Oregon. It was one of the first purchases of my life and I still have it!
I used to have that set but with a few extra cars, like flatbeds with shipping containers and a few other railcars. For about 15 years, once or twice a year I would take it all out of the box, set it up, run it for a few hours, then put it all back. It was in excellent condition along with my other train modeling stuff like gentry cranes and railyard pieces and my collections of everything from 80's GI Joe figures and vehicles to model ships and aircraft. When I became an adult, my childhood stuff went into storage. I joined the military and when I got out I found out that all of my childhood stuff in storage was gone, presumably given away. I'm still pretty mad about it, but at the same time at least other kids got some joy out of my old toys.
Your story reminds me of my dad. When he got home from Vietnam. He found out his mom sold all his childhood stuff. He particularly missed his mini pinball game. and his car.
I remember visiting Klein’s in Baltimore after Thanksgiving in 1973. I was working for George Taylor who owned the Train Station on Indianola Avenue in Columbus Ohio. This was the first store to sell in Columbus to specialize in vintage trains. The store had been almost been picked clean on Thanksgiving weekend and we needed to restock. ‘Old man Klein’ offered us a stack of 30-40 of these sets at $5 each as they had not been good sellers. Being the smart guy he was, George bought them all. Back in Columbus, every time a frantic parent came in to get a ‘train set for his son,’ we sold him a Cox set for $25. I think they were all gone in a week! I still have the brown road grader as well as a yellow one.
Really enjoyed your review of the Vintage COX HO-Scale U.S. Army Model Train Set and the Mehano Track Pack! It's fascinating to see models from the 1970s in action and to learn about their history and value. Your detailed unboxing and testing give a great sense of what to expect from these sets. Thanks for including the price points and the purchasing links-it's super helpful for anyone looking to add to their collection. Appreciate your efforts to keep these vintage sets alive in the community. Keep up the great work!
found a partial of this set in an antique store a few years ago, but it looks like you're actually missing a car! there was a car that was an ammunition car that had a play function that would make it mock 'explode' and all the sides and roof would blow off the chassis.
I got this set from one of my dad's friends years ago along with some other trains. It did not have the boxes or the car with the road grader, and the locomotive didn't run well, mainly because I couldn't get the motor to sit well.
I have one 40 foot boxcar that you don't have but I don't have the 50 foot boxcar with two German 88mm guns and my Patton tank is missing. My loco makes the same noise, a very poor drive mechanism but a great set to own.
I don't buy lower end train sets anymore so it's fun to watch someone else struggle with disappointment. I reserve my own struggles for the big ticket items that are often just as disappointing!😂😂😂😂
I didn't get the tanks trucks and troop cats but definitely have the engine a flat car the box car with twin cannons the big cannon and caboose it was from a flea market I guess still I love theyse train sets lol I'm glad I seen this video in my suggested videos this is a wonderful set
As soon as I saw these I had to check my collection. It turns out that AHM also made some of these. I have 2 rail guns and two cabooses. I found the at a wholesale outlet store back in the 70's (I was a kid then) for 50 cents apiece!
I have a more recent set by Model Power. Recent enough to come with knuckle couplers locomotive is actually all wheel drive. The cannon and tank flat car look identical. However the Model Power locomotive runs a bit fast.
I have an insane amount of inventory on these trains. And I mean insane! 2-300 of them! I have some not even shown in this video. Nice seeing them being shown off as they are awesome ! I intend to detail them adding steel trucks and Kadee couplers.
Very Cool!. I myself have a complete, unopened Big Pine Lumber Co train set that i got as a kid. I had so many trains that i never got around to playing with it,haa!. One thing i discovered though is the motors in some of these diesels werent exactly great.A childhood pal of mine said his diesels motor died after a month sadly. If anything at all, people who'd like to restore the motors should just go to a company called Northwest Shortline. They make "Re-powering kits" for various old trains and they also make custom gears and wheel sets. I go to them when i build HO MU coaches and or if i wanna power up a dummy loco i find in bargain bins at hobby shops. Check their site out, it's great! nwsl.com/
Yeah, I'm doing a similar project to some of my old Tyco, Life-Like and Bachmann equipment I had when I was a kid. The metal wheels not only look better, but it drastically reduces the amount of grime and gunk that the plastic wheels generate during operation. So if anyone is on the fence about changing the wheels, I say go for it, your track, arms and back will thank you later!
In real life that train would need at least two other diesels with all that weight, so that F3 straining to pull that train by itself is actually pretty realistic-even if a kid would be disappointed on Christmas Day.
5:54 it's somewhat funny that I can kind of identify the tank here on the bed,or at least what it takes inspiration from. M47 Patton. (Corrected by another person, originally thought it was a M41 Bulldog.)
i like the fact that he lets the loco struggle and isn't aware that that can burn out a loco, and sense this set is over 50 years old, wouldn't advise putting a big load on this loco or it dies
I have the same set. I'm glad to see you have it in the original package as well. I take it out and run it a few times a year and make sure everything is lubed and able to run well. Thanks for sharing your video. If I had a second set I would covert the engine to DCC and put Kayde couplers on the engine and cars to run on the layout the club has that I belong to.
this train: can shell the opponents while on their journey to city A, and when their can combat everything with the tanks acting as turrets and the turret van popping turrets of enemies
That train looked Cool but the locomotive wasn't good enough :(. The other yellow one seemed better for it as it was much more silent than the first one, it looked heavier and better than the first one also. I also have the same locomotive (green one) except that it is red coloured and has a different connector.
I am a superfan of US military and I love evry hardware produced by US since they are so massive and so good-looking machines...I want this one now😍💝
I had this exact set. Loved it. But I was young and a few m-80s made an appearance .I do have a star wars Ho scale train.. but no track.
Had this as a kid. Only mine was camouflaged. Same cars n everything.
Mine also came with army men. Loads of fun.

can you post a video of it
You can get it for around $110 now on EBay. Also I think that set came with a plane launcher that would hit the side of the car reveling the guns.

So very special it receives the white glove treatment, that mean we must never play with them. Right.

I still have the one i got for Christmas, does not have all those cars must have been a smaller set.
Omg I had that same train set when I was a little kid.
I think Model Power inherited the F3 molds since I have a Model Power F3 that looks *exactly* like the Cox version (except in Santa Fe War Bonnet).
I think you're right I have a Model Power set. I lot of these peices are identical.
