A few other differences are that the reissue has nickel hardware instead of chrome and if you look at the cutaway area on the original, it is much more 'pointy.' I bought a 1979 the Paul yesterday for real cheap its heavy used over the years but it plays and feels great . One of the best Guitars I have ever played I love it !!!
I got mine off of an old blues guy that was on the streets. Offer them cash for it. It plays the blues better than any guitar I've ever owned. Single note melodies, solos, all of it sounds so amazing.
My 1st guitar is a 79 The Paul. Still own and play it all the time. Bought it new for $350 with a Hardshell case in Brooklyn NY. Wouldn't trade it or sell it. Great Guitar!
Nice video! I've got a 79. The T-Tops are awesome. They are crisp, clear and stay detailed on the low strings when pushed. Mine has the classic 70s low Gibson frets and this adds a little a little mellow "woodiness" to my ears. I have a Junior a Standard and this The Paul. It's voiced right between the Standard and Jr. I LOVE flat top LPs.
You can hear how the vintage pick ups in the 80 have lost that sharp sound from age you hear in the 2019 (clean). I'd say the 2019 has more bite to my ears talking about distortion because they're newer pick ups. Don't know if I explained that right... my 82 is arriving in 3 days!
Forgot to say - The video is fantastic the way you have compared the differences and neatly transitioned the two guitars. Great playing as well of course!
For me the 1980 - it has a warmth that is great for blues and a lovely vintage vibe. A guitar is also about how it feels in your hand and the lower vintage fat frets, and ebony board, on my 1979 feel like butter to play. The reissue sounds brighter harsher to me - i would rather spend the money on a good original.
First , thank you for demonstrating the guitar clean with chords and scales. Really shows the organic nature of the guitar. Haven't seen what kind of deal can be had yet, but think the price should be retail @ $1000. Great playing by the way. Like how your songs. Covers the fretboard and different styles and tones. COOL !!!
I bought my "The Paul" '79 in 79 or 80, I forget which from either Wedgle's or Bobby's Music in Denver, I forget which. I still have it, but since then I've owned a few dozen electric guitars and now have six of those. None of them ever played the blues any sweeter than The Paul still does today.
Great Guitar ,as an , ex-Pro, 73, I personally I prefer The original, I have one, and boy does she sing , in any tone, the C neck is to die for, thanks for your excellent video, and great guitar playing too,” Ride On “
Love the warmth of the original but really dig the heat from the reissue. I had a The Paul and gave it to my nephew 15 years ago. He ended up selling it. Wish I had it now. May pick up a reissue because I like the simplicity in the design and how nice it sounds.
That descending phrase you play starting at 0:30 on the original is pretty much exactly the same as something I composed and played on MY original back in 79 or 80. Weird indeed. I think mine was a variation on the outro to Hendrix' "Angel" so maybe the same motif is behind yours, but whatever, it's a trip to hear that you came up with something remarkably similar to what I came up with 40 years ago.
I am torn here, I like the taller frets of the new one and the Allen screws on the bridge but the more mellow tones of the T tops and the Ebony board win the day for me so I will be keeping my 79. Nice to see The Paul getting so much love!
Hey trogly I happen to be very legally blind and I still can't wait till your videos come out toyour videos are just a wealth of information. And the pool holds memories for me I was in a band in San Francisco tearing up and down the west coast of California and my guitarist had Nepal this was 1983. I always thought of it as being a cheaper Les Paul but he loved it and it brings back memories just listening to your description of the guitar. Again thank you for your videos I love everything Gibson nice as you do I suppose. I would like to see a couple of comparison videos if you could on some older and newer Firebirds thank you again please excuse any typos misspelled wordsI'm legally blind I use speech to text with does and says what it wants to and disregards myself sincerely yours, Bob the blind bedroom
I remember when used guitar stores couldn’t give these away. In the mid nineties you could find em for so cheap. I passed on multiple that were all sub $300 range
Pickups in the original sounded a lot better. The top on the new one was better. I never have liked these guitars, but your channel is making me look at these again (that and I'm older now and less shallow 🤣). Happy Thanksgiving! 🎸😎
I like the new, better produced videos, they have an edge, in many of them you apply a sort of humor I like and clearly your playing has improved, or you take more time to do more takes, I get it, etiting takes much longer. But I miss the daily dose :) , your videos are kind of therapeutic. It's like teleporting to another dimension, away from daily news, money problems and all sorts of hate and misery. I mean I will never ever buy a vintage gibson, not even a new one more likely. Still, I seem to be very interested in these formerly obscure facts (now I can spot an ABR1 bridge from a mile away, haha). Btw this one seems to be a pretty accurate reissue, and seems pretty nice all in all, but I still like the old one better.
I wouldn't mind trying the reissue, but I've still got the '78 original that I bought new as a teenager. It was my first "name" guitar - "Hey... I've got a Gibson!" - and it's done me proud over the years and I wouldn't want to part with it. It's definitely changed (I'd say improved) with age in terms of play-ability - there's a smooth easy action now, where I remember a slightly formal and precise feel originally - and it has umpteen times more character than any of my more recent axes, with a sound all of its own. Basically, I love it! By contrast, a Strat which I bought in the early '80s (ironically to replace The Paul for some recording situations...) has never really improved, despite years of playing. It's still just "a thing" that I wheel out once in a blue moon to make sure it still plays OK.
1980 looks better to me and sounds a lot warmer. But then again I'm watching this through the shattered screen of an iPhone. Happy thanksgiving (almost ) Trogly 🤙
Great review Had an original 78 back in 87. (Just noticed the irony;;-). Sounded great, but never stayed in tune.. Happy Thanksgiving Troglodytes 👍🏻👍🏻🎉🎉❤️❤️
Finally, some Possum Kingdom 🤘 That 80’s bridge pickup is incredibly sweet clean, and I preferred the middle position both clean and dirty on the 80. Dirty, either one will do fine with maybe a bit of an edge to the ‘19 for the metal tones, but the 80 really shines on the cleaner end. Nice review, thanks.
The 80 almost sounds like it has single coils, in a good way. I normally associate humbuckers with bad clean tones but I really dig the original. Thanks for giving my locals guys love with the toadies cover!
Hi. You don't know which pickups are in the original and the reissue? I've read that the reissue has 490/498 in it. I am wondering if the original has Tim Shaws. I see that you mentioned in a comment below that the original The Paul has T-tops. I'm looking at purchasing a set of pickups claimed to be Tim Shaws that came from a The Paul. Visually, they appear like Tim Shaws with a stamped serial number on the backplate. Do T-tops have the same appearance as Shaws including the same 2,737,842 patent number and a stamp on the backplate?
I had a 78 came with T Tops. Someone had added 3 mini toggles for coil switching and phase. Great guitar. I think the difference is just the aging of the components plus the difference in pickups.
I love that model although I like the mid range snap of the older model , the look of the newer models wood is nice . If I had the cash I'd definitely get one ! Cool review .
Hey Austin, Having played in Pittsburgh punk bands in the late seventies to early eighties, the 1980 was THE TONE Instantly recognizeable.Between the two I would go with the 2019 for it's ability to cut through in live situations.
Are either of these considered to be faded? I had a Gibson lp that I was told was a Paul. I bought it around 2006-2009 but it was similar to the ones showed. I got the sg, les Paul, and flying v all in the faded style. And I was just waiting on Gibson to make an explorer faded. But I had to sell my collection to fight a custody battle and i never got the explorer faded, did they ever make one?
I bought the original when it was new. I still have it and love it. I tried the reissue at Sam Ash, and I just didn't like it as much. Just from the feel. But how would you compare them to the 2019 Gibson Les Paul Special in natural Mahogany?
I owned a LP Special with the 490 and 498 pickups in it and I'm sad to say they are my least favorite modern Gibson pickups. The clean tones are uninspiring and a bit on the harsh side but the they do work well for modern high-gain rock. Personally I like the Burstbucker II better because, for me, they have a bit more of a classic rock tone to them. Let people know if you're going to keep the reissue and if you plan on swapping out the pickups.
I put a set of 490/498 in my 2003 Korean epiphone les Paul... sounds fantastic...I dont get the negative opinions for these pickups...they are good enough for gibson custom shops...IMO
I like them both, but if I had an original, I'd want it to be...Original. On the other hand, I could always change pups on the reissue to make it sound more vintage. Maybe some Duncan Saturday Night Specials.
TO/@ : TROGLY'S GUITAR SHOW: I own a 1978-1979 version, I took it apart when I was 18 and messed up the bridge pickup trying to make it sound brighter. What a mistake that was. I put in an EMG active bridge pickup to replace it, so it never sounded right when switching between the EMG bridge and the stock Gibson neck pickup. I now want to get a replacement bridge pickup that is close to what the original Gibson neck pickup was. Do you know what would be a good replacement bridge pickup that would be close to the orginal Trogly? (or any one else who might read this.) Unfortunately the old bridge pickup has long been put in the trash in the 80's. Moral of the story, for me anyways, if you have a decent guitar don't mess with it, keep it as is and get another different guitar with the sound you like. I almost sold this guitar to my son's friend about a 15 years ago so glad I kept it.
I don’t think theres enough of a different to really made a difference. Anybody that played guitar good, would sound great of either of these. I did it, fellow trogs. I routed a neck 57 pickup into a 2013 es 335 studio. Finshed the Job that gibson started.
Recently bought a studio with the same pups as the reissue, and I am for the first time in years not happy with a guitar’s stock pick ups. I don’t play with more drive than “whipping post” or maybe ac/dc and they are too much for me dark and hot. I would choose the old one because of the slightly cleaner pups.
the re-issue sounds more modern for sure and reacts better in distortion mode... but I own a 80 firebrand deluxe (mahogany body) and for blues or jazz its great and sound better in clean mode... but again the re-issue looks nice
excellent review, as always!,, both sound good, but your'e right, new one has a bitey mid., btw, your'e gettin good on that thang!,,.. happy thanksgiving !, from connecticut !,, and i dig your posts, you are one of the best, on you tube !! gene k.,, ...
The 1980 original sounds way better and looks better with the ebony fretboard and that aged lacquer giving it a richer look over all. You could test to see if you can dial in the sound of the other guitar on the amp as a test next time comparing two similar guitars.
Bought a 78 the Paul years ago for a 100 bucks, it was beat up missing the bridge Pup. So I ruined it be refinishing the guitar with tung oil, replaced the tuners and dropped in a 57 classic in the bridge and a burst bucker 2 in the neck and then a regret job. best cheap guitar that I own. Sadly I kinda wish I left the finish original because it had a nice worn look and the Gibson logo was fading, but as a dumb kid looking for a project it came out great.
The 80's sounded way more betterer, to my ears, the re-issue is just a bit too thin/bright sounding, while the body of the sound with the original is traditional in the thicker sound that I like. The re-issue just seems to sound like any modern day guitar to my amateur ears.
Hop on a scale and see how much they weigh please. I'm curious. I'm guessing that the original will be slightly lighter even though it has smaller contour cuts.
both great. I dig the reissue. the extra bite suits my stuff. the compression on them is not as pronounced as on a '61 Zebra or EMG. I agree with you, the original has good clean rhythm tones so one of each is a good bet. if only they came in gold top. Ü ♫
On middle clean the 80 sounds so much cleaner. The tone has a fatter midrange. The 2019 seems to be lacking in some frequencies and the pickups may be a little too hot as you can hear it starting to break up where as the 80 is just clean through and through. I did prefer the modern example on the neck pickup. The 80 sounded a little dull and flat and the 2019 was bright and crisp but not overly so. Overall though the 80 had the better tone with the exception of the neck position.
older sound a fuller...like you have slightly different EQ settings.....but wouldnt buy any of them. I just got Manace and its really nice instrument..
Much prefer the 1980, the 2019, aside from being way over priced, is too hot on the bridge for my tastes. I do like the figuring on the 2019 but that requires shopping around till you find one you like so it hardly counts as a point for the 2019. Great comparison.
Had one of the originals got it for 350 without case in SF in 1981 Loved that thing Never should have sold it I think the original is better Hardly anyone knows about The Paul
rosewood gives a bit of crunchy to sounds using gain,, ebony give a bright top end to the sound ,,maybe that was getting to sound himbuckers a bit single coil brightness ? I have a bass with walnut neck and body ,, neck solid walnut , and can sound like a fret-less when sliding a note,,
A few other differences are that the reissue has nickel hardware instead of chrome and if you look at the cutaway area on the original, it is much more 'pointy.' These instruments might look similar, but they are very different! Which one did you prefer?

the original is better. the original T top's are way warmer

Agree with you on that, seems like the reissue sounded like it had a touch of gain running, even clean. The original was very warm.
I chose the original. I care for the chime as to the cleans, and the overdriven sounds were warm and not as nasal.
I have a 1982 one, bought then, and still playing her, and I think I continue to prefer my old version

Best & most practical Gibson! As I've said before,
I had one & actually made money & had fun playing it.
Fender needs to make "The Tele"!
Wouldn't it be "The Leo"?
Love the warmth of the original but really dig the heat from the reissue. I had a The Paul and gave it to my nephew 15 years ago. He ended up selling it. Wish I had it now. May pick up a reissue because I like the simplicity in the design and how nice it sounds.

Props to the Toadies riffs.. you know your gear and the people that used the Paul
I am torn here, I like the taller frets of the new one and the Allen screws on the bridge but the more mellow tones of the T tops and the Ebony board win the day for me so I will be keeping my 79. Nice to see The Paul getting so much love!
ill take the 80's

Good stuff Austin lad. My cousin who is named Paul has just seen me watching this vid & proclaimed " oh man, I'm fucking getting one of those!". Lol.
Both are good guitars. Put them in a mix and get a great guitar sound 👍
I remember when used guitar stores couldn’t give these away. In the mid nineties you could find em for so cheap. I passed on multiple that were all sub $300 range
I have to give it to the 1980 for all sounds. But hey, the 2019 doesnt suck by any means. I would like to own one.
Not going to be getting rid of my '79 The Paul any time soon.
wow the reissue's bridge p/u doing cleans was something awful - did you try to lower it?
i don't understand how anyone would prefer that sound
Pickups in the original sounded a lot better. The top on the new one was better. I never have liked these guitars, but your channel is making me look at these again (that and I'm older now and less shallow 🤣). Happy Thanksgiving! 🎸😎
Just fired up the video. As an owner of a 79 Paul with T Top s I’m very curious. Many thanks for posting this video!
Many years ago I owned a the Paul 2. Massive mistake trading that away. Have you had one? I’d love to see a review one day.
Excellent demo! The original seems a bit smoother and warmer. The reissue brighter, snappier and a bit thinner. Would be happy with either
1980 looks better to me and sounds a lot warmer. But then again I'm watching this through the shattered screen of an iPhone. Happy thanksgiving (almost ) Trogly 🤙
I like the original but I’m glad that Gibson is bringing back The Paul I have a original 1978 The Paul and I love it great guitar
Great review
Had an original 78 back in 87. (Just noticed the irony;;-). Sounded great, but never stayed in tune..
Happy Thanksgiving Troglodytes 👍🏻👍🏻🎉🎉❤️❤️
But would it sounds the same if you swapped the pickups?
Finally, some Possum Kingdom 🤘
That 80’s bridge pickup is incredibly sweet clean, and I preferred the middle position both clean and dirty on the 80.
Dirty, either one will do fine with maybe a bit of an edge to the ‘19 for the metal tones, but the 80 really shines on the cleaner end. Nice review, thanks.
Yup
Imho the reissue sounds better. I like it's bite.
The 80 almost sounds like it has single coils, in a good way. I normally associate humbuckers with bad clean tones but I really dig the original. Thanks for giving my locals guys love with the toadies cover!
I have one from 96/97 in Cherry finish. It has an Ebony fingerboard. Nice guitar!
The 80 version sounds warmer i prefer that sound
Both are radical
Enjoyed the video and really listened, I came out preferring the reissue model.
Hi. You don't know which pickups are in the original and the reissue? I've read that the reissue has 490/498 in it. I am wondering if the original has Tim Shaws.

Your playing seems to be coming along a lot. Is this a conscious effort or something that’s just happening from sound demos?
I had a 78 came with T Tops. Someone had added 3 mini toggles for coil switching and phase. Great guitar.
I think the difference is just the aging of the components plus the difference in pickups.
TinIndian1968 strange my 79 has the same coil splits
@@michaeloneil8475 that is interesting. It was a great guitar, had a real nice comfortable worn in feel to it.
I love that model although I like the mid range snap of the older model , the look of the newer models wood is nice . If I had the cash I'd definitely get one ! Cool review .
I have both and my 79 or i guess 80? Is a bit warmer and plays like butter. My 2019 is almost identical but more loud.
Hey Austin, Having played in Pittsburgh punk bands in the late seventies to early eighties, the 1980 was THE TONE Instantly recognizeable.Between the two I would go with the 2019 for it's ability to cut through in live situations.
Nice grain on the new one, and for the most part it sounded better to me. Dammit, now I want one.
I prefer the 1980
To me the reissue sounds way better. Which is very surprising. To each their own though

Trogly!!
Old one all the way... more articulated sound. I'd like to see the reissue with Gibson '57 or something more PAF-style.
I prefer a the sharper edge on my wrist when playing a Paul because it keeps you on your move to try avoiding it!😘
He’s wearing pants!!! I’m so happy! Thank you
I have a ‘79. Prefer it over the reissue.

beautiful top veneer/ cap ! snappy sound, from walnut!
Do gibson just make re-issues now days or what?
1980 for me, but I'm old. The 2019 sounded too modern for me. I have a 498 in a guitar and I am going to change it. Too hot loses tone IMHO
I like them both, but if I had an original, I'd want it to be...Original. On the other hand, I could always change pups on the reissue to make it sound more vintage. Maybe some Duncan Saturday Night Specials.
Ok i have a question

I did it, fellow trogs. I routed a neck 57 pickup into a 2013 es 335 studio. Finshed the Job that gibson started.
Recently bought a studio with the same pups as the reissue, and I am for the first time in years not happy with a guitar’s stock pick ups. I don’t play with more drive than “whipping post” or maybe ac/dc and they are too much for me dark and hot. I would choose the old one because of the slightly cleaner pups.
I regret ever getting rid of my original Paul
the re-issue sounds more modern for sure and reacts better in distortion mode... but I own a 80 firebrand deluxe (mahogany body) and for blues or jazz its great and sound better in clean mode... but again the re-issue looks nice
Definitely prefer the original over the reissue, but then again I'm older and have a bias towards the sounds I grew up with.
excellent review, as always!,, both sound good, but your'e right, new one has a bitey mid., btw, your'e gettin good on that thang!,,.. happy thanksgiving !, from connecticut !,, and i dig your posts, you are one of the best, on you tube !! gene k.,, ...
The 1980 original sounds way better and looks better with the ebony fretboard and that aged lacquer giving it a richer look over all.
You could test to see if you can dial in the sound of the other guitar on the amp as a test next time comparing two similar guitars.
To me the best is...
A 60's Guild Starfire XII!!!
(No just kidding, the 1980 sounds great!!!).
Do i know you from somewhere?

The original. My very favorite electric . Period
I definitely think the finish on the original is better, at least it looks like it in the video.
Hop on a scale and see how much they weigh please. I'm curious. I'm guessing that the original will be slightly lighter even though it has smaller contour cuts.

@@Trog oops. How embarrassing. Thanks!
FASCINATING STUFF that being said i prefer the originals sound and look/ im also a 1980 model humanoid and we need to stick together.
The original model sports Tim Shaw PAF pickups, which have a good reputation.
Original The Pauls all have ttops. Some later made Firebrands (starting late 1980-1981 will have the Tim Shaws though! Thanks for watching
You should see the volute on my '73 Deluxe, it's twice the size of that reissue volute in the video, massive like a womans boot heal haha.
At first impression...old neck + new bridge = gooder
Greg Janes Agreed.
Much prefer the 1980, the 2019, aside from being way over priced, is too hot on the bridge for my tastes. I do like the figuring on the 2019 but that requires shopping around till you find one you like so it hardly counts as a point for the 2019. Great comparison.
Had one of the originals got it for 350 without case in SF in 1981
Loved that thing
Never should have sold it
I think the original is better
Hardly anyone knows about The Paul
Same here badboyblue....bought at GC while in the Navy and sold for dirt cheap. I've got some pretty decent guitars though and great memories.
Great video. I wonder how it would sound with burst buckers?
Again why rosewood?
Because gibson doesnt use ebony anymore
It was getting to hard to get it legally
@@tavicotavio Other manufacturers use ebony. There is no shortage.

@@Trog Your a lawyer.I need more than that to prove there's a shortage of ebony.
rosewood gives a bit of crunchy to sounds using gain,, ebony give a bright top end to the sound ,,maybe that was getting to sound himbuckers a bit single coil brightness ? I have a bass with walnut neck and body ,, neck solid walnut , and can sound like a fret-less when sliding a note,,
I think i like better the Reissue... Maybe i'd swap out the pickups for 57' Classics, but that's pretty much it
T-tops for the win
