    We cant get hay for mulch that is not contaminated by herbicides. I do miss.the benefits of hay mulch. It is a very windy spring here we had a rough winter and looks to be a hot dry summer coming on. I have so many tomato plants I don't have room for them don't know how they will fruit just yet. We get both determinate and indeterminate Roma tomatoes by seed but I have never gotten the indeterminate in a start. Glad you had good luck with them.

    Absolutely those potatoes look amazing they will make nice chips for the kids and your tomatoes they look great.
    I am growing tomatoes this year and have used bird netting and so far so good and yes we have had an amazing summer this year and the rain fall is a blessing for us all and those living in drought I hope they get more thank you for sharing.
    By the way I messages you before about how you open up the fowlers bottles a little while ago, well I found a bottle opener that opens up the fowlers vocola lids with ease and no damage to the lids that alone is worth there weight in gold, you can get them on ebay I purchased mine at Drakes supermarket in south Australia its called jarkey made in Denmark its about $7 it will open any jars.
    I struggle with arthritis in my hands I was able to finally open a jar without asking my son or my neighbours its embarrassing to have to ask for help to open a bottle but now I can do it with ease just thought I would share thanks again for the great video I look forward to watching an update on how your tomatoes go amazing how tall they are :)

    I have a small backyard in my duplex which I turned into a veggie garden We have had a much milder summer with plenty of rain too. I have cucumbers that are almost as tall as the fence and loaded with fruit. I've only been doing this since March last year but it is such a great feeling to eat what you grew. I love watching channels like your's to get some good tips and ideas. Cheers from Northern NSW Australia.

    It's great to see you again! Our garden is entering the coldest part of the year, but we look forward to a great spring. We grow mostly in well-drained tubs and buckets, and very little directly in the ground. The exception is our fenced circle of various berries, with a large hugelkultur mound in the center. Thanks for showing us your garden brother!

    • @homesteading
      @homesteading  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Lew, yes our seasons are opposite to yours. Is there a problem with your soil that makes you grow in containers? Or is it simply a matter of space?

    • @LewWhite10
      @LewWhite10 3 года назад

      @@homesteading Phyllis and I have only been learning to garden for the last 4 years. There's all sorts of advantages to growing in buckets and containers, often layered within one another. Water retention, composting-in-place, and keeping the drain holes 2" from the bottom keeps out tree roots seeking the nutrients and/or blocking-up the drain holes. Tree roots reach out 30-50 or more feet in search of water, and yet we like our forest next to our garden. We use wood chips everywhere, and as they break down, they enrich the whole environment. We use tree leaves all year to cover the soil surface in the containers, and they provide protection and nutrients as they slowly release the minerals they contain from their tree's roots which were carried up from deep underground. It's a self-sustaining "no-dig" method of gardening that we love to watch. A few well-place bird baths and feeders attract enough birds to eat any garden pests that may pose a threat, and a few little ponds provide dragon flies and frogs to finish-off even more pests. Yahuah has created so many magnificent and wonderful things. Thank you for asking!

      Thanks for the encouragement. Thankfully the severe sciatica passed! Was part of a weird virus that our family (and others we know of) have had - effects the stomach and gut and also (curiously) gives muscle/nerve pain in other parts of the body. Seems to take few a weeks (or in some cases months) to pass!

    As a new veggie grower. Very interested in how you grow your potatoes in the ground. After planting you covered them in straw, how deep did you put it and did you repeat that process when they were shooting up or just the once. Could you also tell me what type of straw you use. I’m south of Hobart and there seems to be a variety of straw/hay to purchase. Thanks

    • @homesteading

    • @missza98
      @missza98 3 года назад

      @@homesteading I currently have a sunroom- brick with windows and laser light roof. Any suggestions on maybe turning this into a greenhouse to increase my growing season? Would be a great space but its way too hot in the middle of summer but I’m guessing that would be okay for tomatoes? Longs I kept the water up? I could open the windows for air flow and bees. Do you think it would be a viable option? I’ve never really grown tomatoes before but trying to be more self sustaining and am currently learning to preserve and would rather try and grow my own then source them :)

      @@missza98 Sound like a great idea. Consider using self watering containers, or building a wicking bed. Watch ruclips.net/video/_yrdz-LJGvg/видео.html

    • @missza98
      @missza98 3 года назад

      I actually forgot about this video! Might have to look into them more. It’s a large space but it wouldn’t get the heat from the house during winter as it’s off to the side. Maybe IBC half tanks on wheels might be the go. Door would be too small to move them outside during winter but could move them around the sunroom depending on heat levels. It’s like the size of a two car garage so pretty big
