- I picked up a dirt cheap project 225 quattro, and in this video, the it gets a 3 inch downpipe. We then perform before and after road dynos to see the actual gains from the modification and learn a bit about downpipes along the way.

Almost a year after it was dropped and it’s still one of the best videos I’ve found when looking into a down pipe upgrade. Explaining and showing the before and after while also breaking down how you were able to measure the difference in performance definitely set the video apart from others. Dope job, keep doing what you’re doing

Many of the things you have done, I did or doing myself for the most part. And I 100% agree with you, these are the best project car you can get that is AWD, Turbo and still great looking iconic car you can get with the money. Last 2 years, I purchase two MK1 TTs. ALMS red leather cpe and MK1 Roadster 225 with too many mods, big tubo, FMIC, BC coils, willwood front 4pot brakes (I just purchased it this way) So I am still learning about this one. @@HunterDirection I am going to reach out to Motozal performance, and try one of their tune packages because of you. 15 years ago, I used to own two 1990 Acura NSX, one highly mod $$$$$$$$ for the track, the other for the street. I wish I still had them. But these two TTs are fine to have and feel the Need for Speed and the timeless looks is god enough without breaking the bank or freaking out if someone will door-ding it on a parking lot. And allowed me to feel okay about doing some paint and plastic dip, not feel I ruin it so much.

For sure need to sub on this. I have a 2002 225. As of right now my downpipe and FMIC is sitting in a box. I added the vent boost gauge, Ram air intake from Europe, n275 mod, ordering new larger turbo pipe. I love this exhaust, for sure ordering it. And after all that tuning it at z-works in Dallas Texas.

My spec’s
GAIC flash- 20lbs boost
K&N high flow filter that is connected straight to the turbo
Franken turbo F21
42 design draft 3 inch downpipe
No catalytic converter by 42 design draft
42 designs duel mufflers
CTS intercool that came with a bigger intake manifold then stock and all the plumbing for the turbo
Haldex Touch motion controller
Throttlebody sprint booster
Short stroke shifter
Performance clutch light weight fly wheel
Car is a beast because of the touch motion controller and sprint booster you really need these two things on this 1.8 get them installed and you’ll see what I’m talking about even if you have a big turbo and you’re running 25 pounds of boost you need to touch motion controller and especially the sprint booster

@@HunterDirection i hope ur next upgrade will be some coilovers. The stock TT suspension is waay to high.. i put a ST xta on mine with some michelin tyres and i can tell its worth every cent!

I wish i could put a downpipe on mine too but bcs of the restrictions here TÜV says NO! Even blow off wastegates are not allowed over here..😭
@@Hallo123207 Coilovers are 100% going to be on the car as soon as the snow melts here! We have almost a foot on the roads now so I wanna wait so I don't tear my lip off immediately lol. Also yeah I watched a video on TÜV a little bit ago and it seems like a crazy process to go through. Thank you for the support and the suggestion. I'll check out that brand of coils for sure!
I have a stock 1.8T AUQ (180) with a 2.5 catback. I plan to install a 2.5 catted downpipe, supersized SFS TIP, a new diverter valve (probably Forge 008 or the OEM 710p) and the N75k and then do a stage 1 remap. I am excited about the upcoming results :) This car is fun to drive but it lacks a bit of lower-end power under 3,500 rpm also I feel the turbo has some "lag" even when its a K03s which is supposed to have no-lag at all. Hope the throttle response or whatever you call it, improves with the downpipe :)
I had pretty much identical mods on my 04 A4 Avant. I can verify that the Downpipe made the lag a ton better in combination with the tune. The higher boost threshold and less resistance really helped the throttle response and spool time a ton. My ko3s spooled a ton faster than the ko4 does. I am excited to hear how you like the results :) Thanks for the support.

@Dani I have the same auq engine on a Leon mk1, and I'm planning on a catted downpipe. Did you notice any differences now that you've probably installed it?
And another question, from what I've read, the diverter valve doesn't increase performance or improves turbo spool, I would like to know your opinion on how the car feels with one of those.

There's no stage 2 tune that supports high flow cat/ decat downpipe now. So, I am stuck with stock downpipe, sadly.
Check out Motoza performance! Their tunes are all custom to whatever mods you have
All that extra noise would do my head in after a while
Question. Since you already have the XS Power / Relentless Cat Back System is there a specific reason you did NOT purchase the XS Power / Relentless down-pipe? What made you choose the CTS Turbo down-pipe? Any thoughts or insights would be greatly appreciated.
Great question. There are a few articles that say it's hard for a company to develop a downpipe for the 225 due to the lack of clearance and whatnot. I have had a bit of trouble with fitment for xs power parts in the past (on my a4) so I was a bit wary. I loved my cts turbo downpipe on the a4 (fitment was top notch with no clunking on other parts of the car.) So I went with that again for a similar experience. Thank you for the support! @@HunterDirection Thank you very much for your reply. What were the fitment issues you encountered with the XS Power cat back system? (Do you feel these fitment issues would be present with brand new motor mounts?). Do the exhaust tips sit flush with the bumper valance? If you had to do it all over again would you purchase a full turbo back CTS system? (Or a full system from another company ie - 42 Draft Designs).
@@rennspeed that's another great question. I actually didn't have any fitment issues with their exhaust. It is however really quiet for an aftermarket exhaust, but sounded so much better after the downpipe was on. I think the exhaust tips fit well too. There is a little bit of clearance between the exhaust tips and the rear valence, and it's even all over. The tips were my favorite part. I do remember the length of the exhaust needing to be adjusted a little to fit with the stock cats, but it wasn't by much.
Great results mate but be careful with that amount of torque on the standard rods as they are a weak point and will give way eventually

Absolutely! I've been keeping up with your mk1. It's an awesome car I love the black charge pipe you picked up. I wish there was a similar part available in the states. Importing the matte would be around $300. We have the chrome but the matte looks awesome!
How much would it cost to install the down pipe? If you installed it yourself, how difficult would you say it would be for a beginner to install themselves? I have this exact car and have been considering this modification for a while.
For the 225 the hardest part is removing the stock downpipe. It splits into 2 1inch pipes right after the turbo that connect to dual cats, so you will need to remove the subframe, cut the downpipe off, or use a car lift and a bunch of maneuvering to get it out. So long as the bolts onto the turbo aren't too terribly rusted the job isn't the worst thing in the world but it does take a long time and is a bit annoying without a lift. (not much room at all) I called a few shops to see about it and they quoted me anywhere between $500-750 depending on their rates. Happy to answer any more questions. Does that help?
Just a note, you can get it out if you only fully disconnect the from side of the sub frame while leaving the back bolts on around a quarter thread. Makes it easier to get back together and might reduce any alignment or fitment issues after fully dropping the subframe
Man if that bit of road with the huge dipper is near you, i highly recommend using that location for future videos.
Its would of been nice to run the sound of your TT right to the end of the video... That music left me feeling ripped off. (Constructive criticism)
This was my first video ever, so there are loads of improvements I could make from this one haha. I will plan on revisiting that road sometime for another video!

If you have the 225, A really easy way to tell is to look under the car at the catalytic converters. The stock downpipe splits into 2 smaller pipes which connect to 2 cats. Aftermarket downpipes will either have just one larger cat (same diameter as the exhaust usually) or just a pipe in there place since they don't split into 2 pipes. :) thanks for the support

The car does not have a blowoff valve. :) The sound comes from the "Forge Diverter valve" and the Neuspeed intake.

@@JorgeR000 The car is tuned to peak around 20psi. I would be sure to check if you have a diverter valve or a blowoff valve since you would need a different tune for each. Audis generally run diverter valves stock.

I have a XS-power catback and Techtonics catless downpipe on my 1.8t A4 B5 and honestly I can't stand it.
It's so bassy and annoying. Like pure drone. Sounds a lot better on your TT (although I understand it's a different exhaust layout)
Oh Jeeze sorry to hear that. My a4 sounded way different than the TT as well. It's crazy how different the sound can be with such a similar engine.
You can add resonator , I did, it worked. No more drone and way less noisy in the cabin. But still sounds great out in the rear exhaust
