  • In preparation for our upcoming fishing trip to Lake Winnebago, for the sturgeon spearing season, we went to Otter lake to do a little practice. Its been a terrible year for ice on the lakes, so we also wanted to test that out as well. The ice has been broken up and refrozen many times, which made for some interesting ice.

I like my ice cubes in my drink not over my head.....That's a tough decision when the ice is iffy!!😎🥶

That's a good place to put ice cubes. I'm going out on the ice one more time. I'm really hoping the ice stays under my feet and not over my head.

Good practice! Hopefully you don’t cut a huge hole in your shop floor to try out your other shack! 😂 Good meeting other YT’ers 👍

Its always interesting who you meet when they see you with a camera. I guess nowadays they just assume you are a youtuber.

Good practice run. Looks like you need some ice cleats. With the thin ice 🧊 if you get out it will be easier to cut your holes. Good luck and be safe out there today. Thanks From Wisconsin

I dug out my old ice cleats. Hopefully they will help out next time.

I loved your up-down-up-down transitions with the music. Getting pretty creative there, Rande! I almost bought a saw last week, but I'm holding out on that sight fishing idea until the ice isn't 20+ inches thick like it is over here. I didn't have a plan to spear fish, but that would be pretty fun sometime, too. Apparently, walleye are on the menu for that over here, too, now.

Thanks Randy. I enjoyed making that sequence. I'm happy you noticed. 20 inches of ice is awesome. I wish we had that around here.

they make really cool lures you can hang down the holes that will bring them in, also that other guy used to post a lot of videos but I haven't seen any for a while. I recognized him the minute I saw him, It is good to see he is doing good

That's cool that you recognized Ben. Reggie made me a red and white golf ball attached to a dare a devil that I am going to hang from a ornament spinner. If that doesn't attract something, I will be surprised.

This year you can get away with that hand saw. Most years chainsaw or sled saw are needed, I agree that hub shelter is way to bright, definitely find something darker. Hopefully the lake tightens up a bit, still a bit sketchy for me but hoping this weekend it looks better.

I was wondering how a hand saw would handle 2 feet of solid ice. Its not something I will be doing often, so this will work for now.

I saw a trick on another RUclips video where they take eggshells and drop it on the bottom of the Lake and it makes the bottom stick More never tried it probably wouldn't work on the weeds but maybe on the solid bottom

The old timers use to do that, egg shells, sliced potatoes etc. But that is illegal to do in the Winnebago system now. Any thing you put on the bottom of the lake has to be removed when done spearing.

I did hear about that too, but like the other comment states, it is illegal to do now. Thanks John.

I was going to ask about your spear trip.
Watching news and ice reports the ice is kinda safe?
I know it starts today (10th).
So be safe and hope you have success!
(Some reason my Deerfamy hub seems bigger and is black inside) that's why I ordered the non insulated.

I wish my Deerfamy was black inside. They advertise it for 4 people I believe. I say 2 people max. The red glow makes it really hard to film inside. Its been a handy shack though when I can't use my other ones.

@GoMidwestFishing not sure if you are driving past LaCrosse on I90 on you way Sturgeon spearing but if so you can grab mine if you think it will work better?
Not sure if it is the same size as yours but it is black and that would help
