For all those wondering, this is *the* Lannister's song. The Rains of Castamere immortalized the destruction of House Reyne by Tywin Lannister. House Reyne was obliterated after they rebelled against their liege lord, Tytos Lannister, who was perceived as weak by his own vassals. To restore Lannister dominance, Tytos's son, Tywin, marched against the upstart Lord Reyne. By the end of the rebellion, Castamere had been put to the torch and all members of House Reyne executed. The title is thus a play on words, as the "rains" fall over the empty halls of the "Reynes" who have been killed to the last man.
The lyrics heavily reference the fact that the sigil of House Reyne was also a lion, but a red one instead of the golden lion used as the sigil of House Lannister. The rebellion of the Reynes against the Lannisters was thus seen as a clash of lions.
In the decades since young Tywin reasserted House Lannister's dominance by crushing the Reynes, The Rains of Castemere went on to become very popular with soldiers of the Westerlands, becoming an "anthem" of sorts for House Lannister. This extends to the point that even Western soldiers sometimes refer to it simply as, "the Lannister song". Now anytime there is talk of rebellion of words against the Lannister's, a bard is sent to sing this song to them, a reminder of those who had tried before.

Northern Europe was pagan until mid medieval times, but I wouldn't call those times "dark age" as the OP called it, the stereotypical "dark ages" are under christian control in the mid and later medieval times, as you said. And as great a singer as Malukah is, she would have been a house wife and little but.
I've never seen game of thrones, but I hardly original, and I love this so much more. Just the harmonies and her tone are so lovely not to mention the guitars. It just makes me so happy to hear it! 💛🌼

Love your work, Malukah! This is the nicest cover of Rains of Castamere I've heard, by far :D I've spent time trying to learn the acoustic guitar, taking the self taught approach. Progress is slow as you can probably imagine but there's a youtube tutorial for most things - yay! I'm trying to learn this tune based your version. Just wanted to ask; are you in set up with the standard EADGBe tuning for this track? Also, the link for the chords errors out with the old 404 thing, any chance you could repost the chords?

Awesome, the link works, thank you! I did manage to find your choice of chords on ultimate guitar (I was being impatient, a girl on a mission hehe). Ahhhhh capo, being a novice learner I've never used one, I was wondering why my chords didn't sound quite right \o/. Tywin is the one, the song warns against. Not his father nor his sons.
His father's weak style of ruling is what made the Reynes of Castamere rebellious in the first place. And his sons never fulfilled his expectations.

I don't get it, this song represents an atrocity, the complete beheading of a family, which heads were showed in public over an entire season. As much as Twin Lannister is a cunning and efficient leader, the man is one of the most despicable and disgusting beings of all books, losing only and maybe to Ramsay.
Randyll Tarly is pretty high up on the horrible beings of the books list.
Just to play Lannister advocate, stop and think about the disrespect and insult that Tywin was a witness to. He grew up seeing his father (Tytos Lannister) be kind and just only to have people jape at him and not pay their debts-because of this he saw kindness as weakness and frankly in GRRM's world that is not a bad way to think. Remember he was the only one to raise an objection to Genna Lannister married to Emmon Frey. She loved him for that because he showed that he would stand up for his family and what he thought was not a good match.
I wouldn't call him a monster, and I wouldn't say that he is excessively cruel either. Tywin doesn't live in a world where everyone is kind he lives in a world where if he shows weakness, his family will be brought to ruin.
