  • In this video we show you how to use Excel as a data source for Tableau so you can visualize your Excel-based data. Knowing how to connect is essential to getting started with Tableau. In fact, that's where I got started!
When you use Excel data in Tableau, you get some unique options for your connections which can help clean and interpret your data for you. We introduce those features in this video, but there are several other videos that may help you with specific aspects of your Tableau to Excel connection.
    In this video we cover:
    - How to connect to an Excel workbook.
    - How to load a sheet.
    - How to join different sheets together into one table.
The other videos that might help:

Thank you so much for this video. it is very helpful. Do you know how can I use an encrypted excel file in tableau? Thanks in advance.

I think for an encrypted file, you'd have to open in Excel, save as a CSV, then open the CSV in Tableau if it doesn't open when you try the first time.

@@penguinanalytics1984 Thank you for your answer and your help. I'll try that way. However, this time CSV file would be unprotected in the share drive. Thanks again. Best.

Does the Excel file(s) need to be closed prior to connecting it to Tableau or it does not matter whether it is open or closed?

When I made this video it didn't, but these days it does seem to need to be closed before you can connect to it.
