A good example is my favourite club Stuttgart. With mostly the same lineup we played against relegation last year. But then we got a really competent coach and now we re about to leave both Leipzig and Dortmund behind us in the race for the CL positions. Both teams have much better players on paper. Mediocre players can compete with much better ones cause the biggest factor is the coach today. The best players have far less freedom than they had in the past and so youth players get trained to obey the coaches phylosophies over everthing, leading to much more streamlined players. You dont see extremely unique players like Ronaldinho, Robben or Gattuso for example anymore. Same with whole teams. Mid 00s Milan, Brazil 2002, Sir Alex ManU or the Chelsea with 11 captains, etc. We look at such lineups in marvel cause we wont see anything thats somewhat close today.
