Sorry, for commenting in English. This brings back memories, I sometimes miss the old Korean memes, they were a lot darker, edgier, and morbid than anything I've ever seen on any online community when I figured out what this was all about; it truly made Korean memes standout in a unique way compared to other countries' communities I explored. To turn a tragic event into a work of art, regardless if it is in good faith or not, I miss that sometimes. Combining the current Korean's higher creative standard for collaborations with this classic phenomenon; nice work and thank you, everyone involved in this collaboration.
@@Dion-Man It's not a theory, but you can say people using memes for political weapons ruined it. Before, a lot of people just made memes with the presidents of South Korea for fun. Then communities like Ilbe (far-right Korean online political community, think of /pol/ but on its own web platform) and its counter part (I forgot the name, but it is basically the far-left counterpart to Ilbe) weaponized edgy memes, especially involving presidents of South Korea and politicians, to influence real life South Korean politics and cause a ton of trouble. The shock memes became too controversial and problematic much later on, not to mention, there were people literally directly referencing tragic events like the 2003 Daegu subway fire in very poor tastes for their collaboration parts (it even led to one of the most popular South Korean MAD creators to be "cancelled" and had his sponsor opportunity with Pizza Hut withdrawn). Oh yeah, not to mention, there was this creator named SwitchP that got often harassed, threatened to be doxed and killed for using South Korean presidents and politicians with Japanese anime and source material. Not to mention, he got bombarded with "you bring shame to your country (South Korea), with these videos you are making". These people cannot ever catch a break, and are often met with aggressive and unappreciative feedback. tl;dr It got way out of hand and they did not know when to not cross the line. It got so bad that a lot of Koreans just flat out "quit" and became recluses (still making MADs, but deliberately avoiding old, edgy/morbid/controversial source material, because of the insane amount of toxicity that comes with it). For some, it got so bad that some of the ex-Happil creators just call their works "MADs" now, not "Happils" or "Composites" as associated with that hellhole of a site, DCInside, in the old days.

Actually, the title is a kind of Korean punchline. This is because the pronunciation of *4* and *死* (It's a Chinese character that means death.) is the same in Korean. For your information, The source used in this collaboration was the Korean baseball team's *No. 4* hitter, who committed suicide after killing all of his family members. Just like Chris Benoit. He killed a total of *four* people.

Do you have your theory as to why most Korean memes aren't as edgy anymore ?
