  • This piece is an extraction for the Unofficial Stargate Universe Soundtrack. The goal of these tracks is to provide fans of the amazing series, Stargate Universe, the opportunity to enjoy the music of this show while they await the release of the official soundtrack, as well as to attract a new audience. I claim no ownership of the properties. All music was composed by the late, esteemed composer, Joel Goldsmith, and is the property of MGM studios. I am in no way profiting from these excerpts.
This track is from the episode, Air, Part 3.

Every 2-3 years I tend to rewatch the entirety of SG1, SGA & SGU and right now it's that time again. I just finished SGA yesterday and now started SGU again and man, this track is still so powerful! It's so freaking good!
Man, I love Stargate soooo much! One of my alltime favorite franchise ever and it's such a damn shame that SGA & SGU didn't get renewed for more seasons back then...

Bro, I had no idea he was dead.... Just looked up his history and had no idea he was pretty much the mastermind behind every single stargate series. Died at 54. His father was a LEGEND. The guy just gave so much audio pleasure.... You call it a masterpiece, I can't agree more and I'm an audio engineer/producer.

that's not why either, it was because MGM was going through a bankruptcy and they couldn't afford to continue the show any longer and that bankruptcy was going on for a long while, they thought they would break out of it and be able to continue on, but someone was bad with their money and they ended up almost losing everything in the process.
i'm sure they are plenty happy now since Amazon purchased their entire library, i mean they are probably sad that they no longer own their library that took a lifetime to build, but now they have plenty of money to do whatever with.

It was a mix of several things.
A Large portion of the SG-1/SG-A Fans reaction to SGU.
The change in broadcast times - I remember that some of the changes weren't even announced (and for some reason I'm sure it changed TWICE). Both of these resulted in lower ratings for SGU, but I also remember that SG-A had lower ratings in its final two seasons that I personally attributed to the loss of the power-block of 'Sci-Fi Fridays' Triple of SG-1, SG-A and BSG, but by that point already had its fanbase to hold it up one more season (aka the drop going into season 4 wasn't enough to prevent renewal for s5, but bad enough that the drop going into s5 was enough to not get a s6)
Also, The Scifi Channel (RIP) thought that it would get similar reception to BSG due to the darker tone, so the backlash from the Stargate fandom, that in large part DID overlap with BSG was very unexpected, so going into season 2, they knew by that point it wasn't going to do well enough to justify the high price they'd pay as the premier broadcast channel. It should be noted that a big enough part of BSG's early costs were covered by the UK rights from SKY, which is why the Miniseries and Season 1 of BSG aired in the UK first, but then the US audience got hooked and Scifi Channel (RIP) took the brunt from then on, not wanting to supposedly 'loose' audience to the significant portion whom torrent. (nevermind that most of the reason it had such big numbers right out of the gate WAS due to it being torrented from its UK broadcast, and people watched it on air to give it that extra leg up, without which they wouldn't have even bothered! On the other side, season 2 onward, the UK viewers torrented and *didn't* watch the broadcast on Sky because at that point, it was pointless, not watching it on Sky didn't mean it wouldn't get renewed.
And then with MGM's further financial problems, they didn't want such a financial loss on the lead-in, so Scifi Channel not ordering a third season meant they were unwilling to produce a third season without a station. - The only reason we got season 6 of SG-1 for instance was that Scifi Channel stepped in when Showtime bowed out, and every year was a fight for SG-1's survival due to the rising financial costs - pre-production, production, post-production, salaries, etc. Their "cash-cow" franchise had a large up front cost that was slow to actually pay off when you don't factor in the season orders from a broadcaster., and if you only factor that in (and not syndication and merch etc), probably a large enough financial loss... which I say because of what happened with Star Trek Discovery, it being a big thing that Netflix practically paid for the first season entirely for international rights even though it didn't have rights to air it in the US - so STD on CBSNotAnymore! Or CBSNoAccess or whatever it was called, was completely and utterly subsidized, paid for upfront by Netflix, that way CBS WhatAccess could tout even ten viewers as a success... and conventiently forget to say the number like most streamers do so that 'big success' has no real meaning.
I loved all three stargate shows, Universe over SG-1 over Atlantis. I've done six complete watch-throughs of Universe, whilst only twice watched the entire SG-1 show, and ONCE Atlantis. I got into Stargate during SG-1's Season 7, starting with terrible quality Downloaded episodes of only thirty to forty megabytes. (typical avi files of the SG1-SGA-BSG was in the 350mb each range for the decent but not 720-or-1080 quality, with just over a gig for the higher def files back when I only had an 80gb hdd, so...) my parents even bought about fifteen of the dvd's for me, (individual not season box sets), so I filled in the gaps and bought the missing seasons, as at that point I was out of highschool and started working.
It came at the right time - Voyager had ended and Enterprise was rather "meh" back then. (I bowed back in for season 4, but still skipped the alien nazi's opener two-parter)
I was a grown up and so I wanted more from my scifi than (just) the amazing ship designs and bumpy-foreheaded aliens that were otherwise clearly humans wearing rubber or tattoos.
Voyager, is the prime example for this: I wanted more consistency, therefore, CONSEQUENCE to the premises of the shows. Voyager was supposed to be lost-in-space, but the episodic requirement meant that every episode, the ship is hit with a reset button and the ship is fine and there's always 150 people aboard despite dozens of deaths since the start of the show where it was... 150 people.
Atlantis was seemingly the Voyager of the Stargate franchise, "lost in space", except it wasn't... because it was more of the 'Early-seasons' Deep Space Nine of the Stargate Franchise, an outpost that is a waystation to an unexplored portion of space inwhich there are changelings and an army of mass-produced warrior drones that have the potential to destroy the federato---Hum---Earth, if only they can get past Deep Space Atlantis. They even, in the second season, get a cool new ship, the BC-304 USS Defiant. I mean Daedalus. a kick-ass ship that the Star Trek Fact Files - I mean Stargate Magazine - kept getting wrong on the size (The CGI model was meant for a larger scale, MUCH LARGER, because at the shorter size, the shuttles- I mean F-302s don't even fit in the shuttlebay - I mean hanger! DANG IT!
No. Universe was the Voyager of the Stargate Franchise, good, proper, and carried WEIGHT. You FELT that these people were on the precipice of failure at any moment. You felt that Rush was an arrogant idiot that kept getting details wrong either on purpose because of course he would, or because he doesn't actually know because how would he even know certain things.
Icarus... twenty-one lightyears from Earth, when its a place that homeworld Command found out about from the LUCIAN ALLIANCE ? Really? And he constantly gets ancient history wrong, like... Atlantis (which was more advanced) left earth millions of years ago, when they HAD proper Neural interfaces that WERENT a repository of knowledge. how can you even think that the chair on Destiny is a precursor to the head-grabber rather than the 'lets mind-control technology' chairs? Two seasons and its still DEPICTED as a rather-dangerous-to-use precurser to the latter than the former.

Was this created by you or extracted from the show's audio? Cause if it was extracted you did an amazing job! If that's the case, how did you do it? Which program did you use? If it's made from scratch, impressive job as well! It sounds exactly like the original!
Edit: now that I heard the last part, I can tell there's some background noise, but it's remarkably well done. I'm curious what technique you used.

    • @whatwillhefindouttheredoct6191
      @whatwillhefindouttheredoct6191  3 года назад +20

I mostly just used Audacity. The trick was to use a six track soundtrack instead of a stereo track. Most extractions take the stereo track and add one channel to the inverse of the other, but the result also ends up being in mono. This inherently removes the "center" track, which contains most of the speaking. I believe that this is done so that only one track needs to be swapped out for dubbing. Then, with FR CC FL RR RL and SW, I mostly just drop CC and now also usually SW, since it is mostly spaceship rumble anyways, and combine the remaining four into a stereo track.
I started out doing this because my favorite track was the music playing in Twin Destinies when they passed the damaged version of the Destiny, and nobody had extracted that piece that I know of. I realized after doing a couple tracks that my results had turned out much better than what was available out there. I had done very little with Audacity before this, so I was pretty much a newbie. You can see from my recording list that the extractions get better as they go along chronologically, in general. Some are easier than others. I started with using the noise reduction tool to find an empty part near the track to get a background noise sample to apply to the rest of the track, although now I try to use the equalizer tool more to reduce background noise. I eventually discovered the envelope tool to keep the music level constant. The background music tends to get turned down and then up after while characters are speaking, particularly Rush. I was using the equalizer to remove noise and undesired sounds at particular frequencies, but this was cumbersome and a bit difficult and unpredictable, until I discovered the Spectral Edit tool to directly remove those. This is quicker, but still a bit tedious to use. The hardest, noisiest sounds to remove are the sound effects for the gate dialing and opening, and the ship diving into a star. If I ever have time later, I'm thinking of redoing some of my earlier track attempts to use my recent skills to make them even cleaner.

I did put it there intentionally. I was going to extract the excerpt at the end of "Sitting in the Backyard", but the music shifted to the center track, making it next to impossible to extract well. Also, since the excerpt seemed to be taken from the OST for 2001, I was worried the possibility of a pesky copyright strike was too high, so including someone else's upload takes that responsibility off of me.
