  • HVAC Systems can be vulnerable to high attic temps and sweating duct work can contribute moisture related issues. Paper products stored in attics are vulnerable to mold and pose a potential fire hazard as well. If powered ventilation is used, I recommend using fans that are both thermostatically and humidity controlled. It is also important these be installed in the proper locations and monitored for performance. So far the best attic systems I have evaluated are encapsulated attics. Both Ventilation and Encapsulation should be performed by a qualified professional.

Good video. Its 95 today in Oklahoma City, attic is 110, thanks to a breeze blowing thru my gable vents. No worries.

A properly vented sunbaked roof in the northeast will cause the attic to rise much more that 10-20 higher than outside ambient. The sun heats the dark shingles and then the air inside the attic just like an oven.

Doesn't that mean that there isn't enough ventilation in the attic?

Don't let roofers fool you. First, monitor your attic temperature and humidity, and if need be then add more ventilation.

Should the temp be taken with an infrared Thermometer or do we actually need to measure air temp? Cuz my roof on a sunny day measures 130°F in the roof deck at a 90°F ambient temp

I use a laser to measure roof decking and shingles and an thermometer to read air temp in attic.
