My wife and I visited about 10 years ago and the city is impressive. The mines, homes, surrounding area and even the cemetery is amazing. We had a great time visiting and just taking in the beautiful sights and history.
My grandfather and his two brothers moved to Butte in the late 1800's to open a shop to make harnesses for the mules(?) that pulled the ore carts. I'm told they were a Union Shop to be able to sell to the mine

Butt, Montana. Those copper kings were cold blooded killers. You left out the deadly, toxic, and acidic lake left behind from the open pit Berkeley mine that threatens the local water supply to this day.
The environmentally friend cities of New York City and San Francisco etc that were electrifying needed copper as they were going “green” no longer burning oil for light but electricity. It’s very similar to today as people go green to save the earth but to do so pollute other parts of the earth like supporting child labor and open pit toxic mines in the Congo for instance. Don’t forget ship recycling. The epa saved the Us from pollution so now ships are recycled in India were poor workers wear flip flops as they torch metal down to be recycled. The U.S. epa reduced pollution in the U.S. but promoted asbestos falling onto the beaches of India to enter the ocean and circle the globe for all to benefit and also enter sea food.
