This is extremely unlikely but by far the most interest of the guesses people have made over the years: someone pointed out to me that they thought after a while the vocoded bits weren't saying [something something "radio"] but rather "we want freedom, what about freedom?" That kind of stuck with me for a while considering the context of the game, even though it most likely is probably something like "funky radio" being repeated over and over again. Anyways, great track, great theme. Beastie Boys can do no wrong under any name.
Rod Jonse you're free to think what the lyrics are but i doubt that they have a meaning. Hideki naganuma(music composer for jsr) said that he basically just mixed up random words and phrases for the songs that didnt have any real meaning
Fun fact: Del made two songs with the Gorillaz and the guitarist named Noodle wears Gum's helmet. Gorillaz' sound and art always remind me of Jet Set Radio.
If that's the case then that's strange, considering the station is still called Jet Set Radio in the game IIRC.
