I've heard Daryl comment many times that he and john are like brothers. I believe that johns contributions are massive to the group. In the interviews I've watched both agree their personality types have complimented each other and Hall being more extroverted than john worked well on stage. But hall has spoke of how john can almost read his mind on stage, always finding the right harmonies at the right time. John is a writer, artist, creator, and musician. Daryl's strengths vocally and performing are obvious. Many times people assume John is not getting the attention on stage and I've read comment people have made comments assuming Daryl is arrogant and selfish on stage, ridiculous and shallow assumption. It's obvious that jealousy and bitterness was not a problem. It's like two completely different personalities coming together to complement each other making one completely unique sound on stage. It's a rare relationship that doesn't happen much, but I love it!!!!
He's absolutely key to the vocal harmonies, and several of their biggest hits - "She's Gone," "Out of Touch," "Maneater" - originated with Oates coming up with the hook. He's also a monster lead singer on the right song ("Possession Obsession" for example), but his voice just doesn't cut like Daryl's on the radio or onstage - perfect for blending in the background though. It's also perfect for the acoustic stuff he's doing now, though. Warm and intimate.
I have to say it does annoy me slightly that when John gets a lead, Daryl tends to chime in with an improvisation and step on him - Daryl already is louder in the mix and has the brassier voice so it kind of drowns John out. Sometimes it's cool in a back-and-forth way but sometimes John is doing something really sweet and then it just gets lost when Daryl sings over it. I really enjoy his voice and would like if he got a bit more space to do his thing.
In his memoir, John shows so much admiration for Daryl's incredible talent, no impression that he has ever been jealous or intimidated, just shows a brotherly love for Daryl. Never ever implied that he is arrogant or self-centered the way the music media (i.e. Rolling stone, etc.) likes to portray him. I also believe that John is more of an extrovert than Daryl in the "real world", i.e. offstage...G.E. Smith, their lead guitarist in their most excellent 80's band, describes Daryl as being "shy" in an interview about his first meeting with him. Often if you are shy or quiet or reticent, you are accused of being arrogant or "stuck up"...this I know from personal experience, having been labeled that way myself growing up...society is not sympathetic with introverts...in an 80's interview Daryl described himself as an "oddball" who didn't ever "fit in"... and, kudos to him, he didn't seem to care either!!!
It does my heart to listen to you guys.............I'm a baby boomer, so I've been a fan from the beginning.......And I'm still rocking with you in 2021, and so glad I am ! !💗💗😊
My very favorite band! I saw them play in a real casual outside venue back in the 90’s on a beautiful warm early September evening in upstate New York 6:28 and it was so much fun! They were absolutely incredible and played for almost 2 hours. Best concert of my life!
WOW. BEST VOCALS STILL AT 56... DARRYL JOHN, YOU ARE THE BEST. I KNOW YOUR STILL GOIN...EVEN IF YOU STOPPED, YOUR STILL THE GREATEST OF THE GREATEST...
I watched 1985 LIBERTY CONCERT Daryll got a high pitch voice , but here got low pitch although the quality of presentation never changed as well as john voice kept in a good and cool voice. They are still amazing
Sky Avila I don't have access to the original file, it is extremely hard to find. I downloaded it off a Chinese video sharing site called Youku and reshared it here. This is a very rare concert video with only clips having been uploaded previously by a Japanese user who may have the actual DVD. This was as high quality as I could get it. If you look at my other uploads (which I highly doubt you gave the time to do), some (that are older) are higher quality. It depends on the source. Please don't make assumptions without research...

Their studio recordings are excellent but their live performances are just incredible. They bring it !!!!!
19 years ago. Daryl will be 75 this year and is still going strong, as is John. Recording a new album slow due to covid.

He actually started losing his range a bit even in the Ooh Yeah! tour. It's inevitable.
