George one of the biggest factors with cherimoya is that you need to hand pollinate as the natural pollinating insect doesn’t live in aus or NZ. You will get many more fruit hand pollinating
After watching some vids, I tried hand pollinating a few times, didn't seem to work for me. I have been inviting insects to pollinate by placing rotting fruit under the tree in summer. Fruit flies are most welcome.
Try using a fine tip paint brush
Central Coast, NSW. Have tried hand pollinating a few years ago with limited/no success. Last year our 6 year old tree got about 50 full size fruit, natural pollination only. Only have about a dozen so far (end Jan '21) this year, but have just summer pruned the tree and should be more setting in a few weeks. I don't prune as shown in this video, leave more leaves on stem, but pinch 2 or 3 from trimmed end to stimulate flowers and new growth.
@@RealLifeFruitopia Pollenating flies are honey bees not any insects. Keep some water in bowel near the plant, honey bees come to drink

Am in USA, southern California..usually I removed the leaves and pruneds in February or early March. So they can wake up.

Great video..first pruning video I've seen on custard apple.
I think it's good for tree to flower after winter, not before winter. Flower after winter, then spring comes is perfect time for the fruits because spring then go to summer.

Just watched your video I am in the UK and growing my custard apple tree in a pot. The tree is about 6 ft tall and is 4 years old. I followed your instructions of removing the old leaves but cannot bring myself to prune the branches to the degree you have shown. It is extremely painful. So how can I get my plant to flower without giving it the extreme hair cut.

Was a suprised when I seen 2 braches coming out of each node after waking up from winter. First time seeing this as a new grower

Wasn't beneficial for better yield, more for structure.
I think he over pruned. I would have kept the top part he cut at the end. That was a thick branch. You dont cut thick branch like that. It takes a long time to be that thick. But he did the right thing for cutting the tip of each branch cuz those are thin.
So it behaves almost like a peach in warmer climates. I have to remove foliage from some of my peach trees to get them to start going dormant else they don't fruit the next year. Hahaha you should have pruned then defoliated would have be so much easier but I guess time in the garden is time well spent. Please post an update on this would be cool to see how the new flush of growth came out. Good video thanks for putting it up people are often scared to put up videos that my be risky.

You didn't type where you are, maybe it's too cold or too hot in your location, also is the tree from seed or grafted?

Grafted trees take around 3-4 years to fruit. I never tried growing from seed.

@@fouadbenrezzak8398All seeds grow into little trees that will eventually produce fruit. And chances are it will taste great. Also you get to name that fruit because you are the only one that has that fruit. Its a good thing

I waited 45 days and checked my airlayer of rollinia but only large callous no roots. Did I open too early, I repacked callous and now wait another month then check. Any suggestions?? It's been 95 degrees here in Florida for weeks. Is it too hot to get airlayer results??

@@spandir Australian Custard Apples are a cross between Annona cherimola (Cherimoya) and Annona squamosa (Sugar Apple). Atemoya are also a cross between the two, but the Australian Custard Apple was developed separately, and more recently. So while they have the same parent species, apparently, Atemoya, and Australian Custard Apple are two different fruits.
Cherimoya are more cold tolerant than Sugar Apples, so that's why they're crossed with the Sugar Apple to produce a more cold tolerant tree.
The common names of Annona species change from country to country, and even within a country, so it's impossible to say exactly what species Custard Apple or Sugar Apple refers to!

Hahahaha ..same as yours I have 3 big Cherimoya trees in my backyard. I hv got only one fruit last year. I have hard prune every year...still flowers this March2021 but no males to pollinate with the female..help me!
You have to hand Pollinate. Same flower becomes female to male. When they start opening they are female take small hand paint brush and take Pollen from fully opened flower and tuch/brush inside the flower which just start opening and wait 3 weeks to see small fruit coming out of it

Related to the well known sugar apple. Custard Apple is the common name in Australia.
Atemoya is the name used elsewhere :) they are a mix of cherimoya and sugar apple genetics.
Your cutting skills can be unhealthy for many trees. Cuts should be angled and at specific distances from nodes. Otherwise, appreciate the info.

The tree has turned out stronger with larger fruit. You could've easily searched for updated videos on the custard apple.
Wayyyy too much talking! Why spend all that time removing leaves, leaving the ones at the tips if you're gonna cut off the tips in the end?
