How good are the 2022 Rieslings?

- After the great South Australian 2021 vintage, it was hard to imagine a better follow up. As it turns out, 2021 and 2022 are a good looking pair of vintages: both cool and long, where the decent yields were largely unaffected by disease pressure. In Clare Valley, the 2022 vintage has been widely compared to the great 2002 season. The 2022’s across the board have excellent acidity, generous fruit and fine structure - a formidable trio of attributes. While seasonal comparisons are hard to draw given the myriad of differences the vineyards weather year on year, there is plenty to be gained for our understanding of the resultant wines by looking at them this way. In this video, I explore six diverse and excellent styles from both Eden Valley and Clare Valley. Riesling, whether we look at these super new world iterations, or the great GG’s of Germany, remains the greatest value premium wine on the planet.
Worth checking out Torzi Matthews' riesling out of Eden Valley. Honestly the flavour and texture profile for the price is brilliant!
Agree with you!
In Tasmania we make some beautiful Riesling with real potential for cellaring. Unfortunately, it doesn't sell particularly well in the local market. Great video thanks Erin you are helping to slowly rekindle my love for wine.
I agree, Tassie Riesling is very good indeed. Looking forward to going back there this year!
Rizza!!!!! Neil Pikes range of gaelic cemetery Rieslings. White Hutt Vineyards I believe. Worth great consideration when buying from Clare!
Salute'
I had my first Aussie Riesling from Clare Valley (which was 2022) last week and it BLEW me away!!! They can be hard to find where I am in the USA but I can't wait to get my hands on another, or one from Eden Valley.
So glad for you Katy! Great vintage to start the journey on 🫶🏼
@Erin Larkin , I remember the previous Riesling video which introduced me Castle rock and a few other riesling from the great Southern. I went to the Clare valley specifically to drink Riesling after that and was introduced to Limefinger (Neil Pikes retirement project) and Mount Horrocks by the guys at Seed (Stephanie I am told is more than a match for Jeff Grosset).... Keep the videos coming because without them I wouldn't have tried a stack of wines that I now enjoy
That’s great news Minka! If you’ve ever met Stephanie Toole you’ll know that statement is 100% correct. She’s pretty sensational. More Rieslings to come!
Looking forward to trying these bottles Erin. Bought some Dukes Magpie Hill Rieslings after watching your previous videos on them and they were absolute pearlers!
the single vineyard ones are great too!
They’re brilliant wines!
Not generally mad on the reisling but sounds like 2022 was a beauty 😊
Just really classical and well built for the future. 🙏
I love my Rieslings...particularly from Australia but also from Germany, Alsace and Austria here in Europe, but also Finger Lakes in New York State. It's a great grape with some amazing styles. It would be really interesting if you could explain some of the terms you use when tasting. For example 'tight', 'angular', 'stark', 'linear' etc. Many thanks Erin.
Great video Erin. What about Henty? Arguably just as good as the other regions you featured.
Yep agree! Looked at the drumborg and some others a week or two ago. Was just focusing on clare and eden to wrap up what I started a couple of months ago, with plenty left on the bench!
Will there be a part 2 for Great Southern? I am looking for a few recent vintages to put away.
I have a Riesling tasting building currently with some Great Southern included. Ie - coming right up!
Does Australia ever produce the sweeter Riesling styles we see out of Mosel/Auslese?
Yes absolutely. Certainly nowhere near as common - the majority of Australian Rieslings are dry or off-dry (meaning, some residual, but not heaps). Having said that, plenty of good examples around. My suggestion would be to pick a producer and read up on their selection, most will declare if there is residual sugar in there.
Where does the other contestant for the Crown of the Clare Valley, Grosset Polish Hill 2022, fit in?
I’m not crowning anyone as Best I. Clare, but the Grosset Polish Hill is an unfailingly consistent, powerful, ageworthy wine. The Clare is blessed with depth - a bevy of sensational wines, just a matter of taste!
cheesecloth???
It’s a descriptor I use to describe the dry, textural, cloth like flavour that lees can bring to the wine. ‘Wax’ is another descriptor for a similar character.
