This was a really good show. A terrific topic! I ran into problems with Facebook when I wrote album reviews for Blind Faith and Led Zeppelin Houses Of The Holy, where they took the album cover photos down on me. Later on they have been put back. The naked children on the Zeppelin cover weren't actually naked, but were wearing body suits, and the weather at Devil's Causeway, near the North Sea in Ireland, was very cold that day. I would also mention Roxy Music's Country Life album, where the two models on the cover were removed here in North America, and all there was on the record was a picture of some bushes?? WTF??? I bought an import copy so I could get the real cover. Now it is no longer censored. I remember the controversy over the Guns N Roses cover. That artwork is spectacular, in my opinion. Canada is a bit more lenient than the US in regards to some things. We don't have a lot of Baptists here, or Evangelical Christians. We do have Mennonites and Amish though, but they don't buy rock albums! Another censored album cover is Golden Earring's Moontan, the album with "Radar Love" on it. The original artwork, with a painting of an alien-looking topless woman, was removed for years, in favour of a picture of a woman's ear with an earring with a price tag hanging off of it. It sucked. There are many more. You guys brought up a few I wasn't aware of. Very interesting and enjoyable, and thought-provoking, which I guess is the most important thing. The powers that be don't want people thinking for themselves these days, or even thinking, really. It's not a good thing.

Hello to Brendon and Anthony. Did you know the front sleeve of Queen's single Las Palabras Da Amor from 1982 featured a baby on the front cover. No one knows if the baby is female or male, or infact who the baby is, as they will be an adult of 41 now. If you google for the single you will see the picture. I think its fascinating if we could ever find out who it is. I wonder if they even know that their on the cover of a Queen single.

Hello Brendon and Anthony!!! I bought the Black Crowes' Amorica original cd in 1994 too. Amor means love in Spanish. And so, I always took the title and image as The Crowes way of showing their admiration for women and the USA. Also it was somewhat of an ironic statement as it was released during peak of their success outside of the Seattle grunge movement. Maybe I'm wrong, but regardless, IMO the music is awesome. Great topic! Rick and Lynette

I have a UK first pressing of The Police Sychonicity. This cover was rejected for US release.
The US release is slightly different because the UK copy has a nude image on the back of the album cover. I like having it because it unique. The best thing is holding the record up to the light, the black vinyl appears translucent purple.
For me, I don't buy an album if the cover or even the lyrics conflict with my values. It is about being true to myself, so I can truly be happy with my music.
This is an interesting topic. Thanks for the variety in your videos.

Great subject, I remember the 1980’s hearing in Washington DC with Tipper Gore, Al’s now ex-wife fighting the record industrial and seeing Dee Snider testifying in front of congress over stickers on albums over lyrics. They all look so silly now trying to push their rules on the rest of us. Isn’t it up to the parents to parent their children.

And the funny thing about those Parental Advisory stickers is that it was largely reported that the stickers encouraged young people to buy music with those warnings, especially rap music, and made it easier for them to find "anti-establishment" type music.

John Denver showed up at that court case. Dee Snyder and the other rock musicians were surprised. What is he doing here? Is he supporting Tipper Gore? Turns out John Denver was against politicians making judgments about music. He told them his song Rocky Mountain High was banned from being played on some radio stations because the word high in the title and the lyrics. They thought it was a reference to drug use, which was not true. He made a difference by being there and supporting the other rockers.

Hey once again always enjoy your videos and like you said I just love hearing TALK about music and releases and bands etc... Enjoyed your Livestream the other day also! Great topic here with the "controversial covers" I will say as a big fan of the Pretty Reckless I think her doing that cover was because she was as she described it close to "death" being very close to Chris Cornell their band was with them when he died on that tour, so she cancelled that out, then as they recorded the current album their manager and lifeline as she calls him died in a motorcycle crash and she just went underground, with a lot of demons and had to figure it out if she could continue she did say that was the reason for feeling totally re-born and it happening because of death, she wanted to show how it is at birth (nothing on) and then at death in a grave. But that was her concept of it and she had mentioned it to some magazine earlier or an interview.

One story I meant to add, but forgot. This goes back years ago. I was in Sam The Record Man, which was a big franchise here in Canada for years. This particular store was in the large mall in St. Catharines, where the only still-existing record store that I know of still is, Sunrise Records. I was in the store shopping, and a bunch of teenage boys came in. Apparently they were from New Jersey, on some sort of a bus trip or school excursion or something like that. This was when that song "Me So Horny" was popular, by 2 Live Crew. Near the front of the store was a display of new releases, and that CD was on the rack. These kids were freaking out, as it was the "uncensored" version, which I take it wasn't available in the U.S. They wanted to know how many copies the store had, as they wanted to buy them all, and apparently they did! I've always seen that track as a bit of a funny novelty song, but these kids were just going nuts over finding it without all the naughty bits taken out.

Brendon and Anthony. If you want to see a cover that goes beyond some of those featured here and into "how in the hell did they get away with this" territory, check out an obscure AOR band called Boxer. The album is called "Below the Belt", issued in 1975. I discovered it in independent Mom & Pop record store when it was already a few years old, around '78-ish. The front cover has a fully nude woman with her arm and legs held outwards, and only a man's arm wearing a boxing glove to cover her crotch. Flip it over to the back cover and it's the same pose, but without the arm/boxing glove. So they had a full Playboy-style boobs & bush shot on their album, with the song titles listed off to the side. I was around 13 or 14 when I discovered this and didn't know stuff like this was even allowed outside of Playboy or R rated movies. Just for the sheer shock value, I wanted to buy it to show to friends, who might otherwise think I made it up! The clerk was a lady, who I had seen many times at this store, so I was embarrassed to even take it to the front counter, and even wondered if she would refuse to sell it to me. I picked out a couple other albums to buy and stuck Boxer in the middle, stupidly thinking this would make it less noticeable. So checking out the lady looked the album over, just sort of laughed at it and said something like "everyone who buys this says the music is terrible, do you still want it?" I said yes, feeling two foot small because she obviously realized I was just buying it for the racy cover. lol. It's a bit mind boggling to me that an unknown band could get away with such a risque cover while bigger name artists caught flack for milder ones...If you've never seen this cover just Google the band name and title with Nude album cover front and back"...I looked up some info on this album and on Wikipedia it says that there was a tamer alternate cover for the US market that covered up the bush shot , but this seems to have come later. The one I bought, and another copy I saw later, were both on the shelf at Chicago-area record stores, and I've seen it at record collectors shows that are not the imported UK version.

The U2 lp cover of Songs of Innocence is a great example? It was the guy's son. And it was a powerful statement about love, family, and father and son from what I understand and is pretty deep in that context. Including, The child is father to the man. Which I think is a biblical saying. I am looking forward to getting both those cds, Innocence and Experience.

An 80's German band named Bullet released their second album, "No Mercy", which had a provocative front cover (frontal midsection nude shot with a chained padlock covering the crotch). When it was released, I had no intention of buying it for that reason. But shortly after, I heard the music (the title track and "Down By the Neonlights") and ended up purchasing the cassette. It's among my favorite albums to this day, all killer/no filler, sounding like a perfect Scorpions/Icon hybrid. I still don't like the album cover, however (LOL).

Is there a double standard in music industry ? YES !! I also like pop music and those women get away with sexual imagery because it's taken as "empowerment" or because it's their idea for their own albums and videos. The audience is way more "brainwashed" by pop music to be more sexualized than in rock and heavy metal, even a lot of pop songs are very explicit about sex. I don't have a problem with all that, I do have a problem with that double standard.

When I listen to music nothing else matters (and that’s not a Metallica reference lol) unless I listen to that song. Art is Art. Leave it as is. Let’s just change all the art in the world we NOW deem controversial. Let’s go mess up someone else’s vision of the time whenever it was they created that work. No way!!! Interesting topic guys. I know of a few other examples not mentioned here. These arent necessarily my opinions just things I’ve read about them.
These are covers that make you scratch your head. Like The Scorpions “Virgin Killer”. They have since stated that they were not talking about what the title sounds like but it’s definitely a head scratcher how that was ever deemed acceptable.
Then there are those like “Flesh and Blood” by Poison that by today’s standards seems tame. Original cd and vinyl pressings have blood streaking from the words “Flesh and Blood” on the front cover.
Then there are those that needed to be changed. Biggest example is Dream Theater’s “Live Scenes From New York”. The original cover had fire around the World Trade Center towers and it was also released ironically on 9/11/01. Even though it was certainly not the band’s intention for this album to be associated with something so horrific, that cover definitely needed to be changed.
And I believe the original “Lies” cover by Guns and Roses was changed as well due to the graphic nature of some of the newspaper articles. The UK lp has the model fully nude as well.
    Love the video.

That's a very interesting topic ! I didn't know the slayer cover was censored, black metal bands have actual controversial album covers.. well..not for me but for christians. The one by scorpions, that girl was 13 years old and a few years ago she recreated that photograph.
