  • Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes the conditions of complete and incomplete Spinal Cord Injury.
With a complete spinal cord injury, the patient will develop complete motor and sensory loss below the level of the injury. No sacral sparing. No motor or sensory below the level of the lesion after the disappearance of the spinal shock and the return of the bulbocavernosus reflex. The physician will be unable to differentiate between a complete and incomplete injury during spinal shock. The spinal shock usually lasts 24-72 hours (hypotension & bradycardia).
With complete injury, one cervical root could recover in 80%. Two nerve roots may recover in some patients.
Incomplete injury: check for sacral sparing. Preservation of any sensory or motor function indicates an incomplete lesion. The most important prognostic factor for recovery is the severity of the neurological deficit.
    Central cord syndrome
Caused by a hyperextension injuy. It has a favorable prognosis but poor recovery of the hand function. The lesion occurs in the central part of the spinal cord and the grey matter. The injury can be caused by minimal trauma in the elderly, usually caused by osteophytes. The spinal cord will become compressed between the ligamentum flavum and the intervertebral disc or a bony spur. The injury causes an upper motor neuron lesion in the lower extremity and a lower motor neuron lesion in the upper extremity. Motor weakness is more severe in the upper extremities compared to the lower extremities.
    Anterior cord syndrome
There will be complete motor paralysis and impairment of the sensory function. The damage occurs in the anterior part of the spinal cord due to vascular insufficiency or mechanical compressions such as form a bony spur or a fracture. Anterior cord syndrome has the worst prognosis. With anterior cord syndrome, the corticospinal tract is affected and there is a very low chance of motor recovery (only 15% will show functional recovery). Anterior cord syndrome is usually a result of a flexion/compression injury and damage to the spinal cord is usually in the anterior 2/3 of the cord. The lower extremities are affected more than the upper extremities. The posterior column is spared with position, proprioception and sense of vibration not being affected.
The anterior syndrome is different from central cord syndrome- central cord syndrome is caused by a hyperextension injury.
    Brown sequard syndrome
Brwon sequard syndrome has the best prognosis with 90% recovery. It is caused by hemisection of the spinal cord usually due to penetrating trauma. There will be ipsilateral deficit of the motor function, proprioception, vibration and deep touch. There will be contralateral loss of pain and temperature and the spinothalamic tract crosses at the spinal cord.
    Posterior cord syndrome
This syndrome is very rare and is associated with loss of proprioception, deep touch and vibration. The motor, pain, temperature, and light touch are preserved.

Hi. I've been paralyzed for 25 years now. Great quality of life. Wish this was available in 91. I'm a C5-C6 incomplete. Peace and love to all!! Keep pushing onwards. Keep negative people and energy away from you. Vent when needed. Try not to stay down.

We do have experimental replacements. They are wires that act as replacement nerves. If that is too risky, then we have fully-operational brain-controlled prosthetic limbs. This is assuming that you are only paralyzed from the waist down.

I can't get any doctor to test me. Last MRI was done about 7 months ago. Car accident almost a year ago. Spine was fine before accident. After, discs butting up against spinal cord, vertebraes shifted out of place, left foraminal stenosis, bilaterial foraminal stenosis, central canal stenosis ( neck ). Neurosugeon said he would not do any surgery. In the past few months my upper arms have wasted away and hands are wasting, arms are weak tingling burning numibsh, can't breathe from upper chest anymore, only can belly breath ( and those muscles are wasting ), my breathing will stop on it's on- it gets shallow and shallow and stops completely and won't pick up by itself- i have to focus on breathing so when it stops I bring it back, go unscoinscius and breathing stops, i legs burn tingle and are numb, hip pain, pain in esopghagus on swallowing.. feel pain in chest, spine and breasts when swallowing food/water, belly feels numb on the inside - i can touch it and feel it. burning organ pain. can feel pain in intestines and stomach. Laying down feels like I'm laying on a broom stock. Pain in spine, neck shoulder pain. I can't get any doctor to MRI my spine ( i feel the damage is alraedy done and keeps continuing damage ) can't even get doc to give me oxygen to help breath or cpap/bpap. Docs think I'm crazy. I had done tons of horrendous coughting and when I did I felt zaps in my spine.. soon after couldn't feel my chest muscles at all or feel air going in them. Legs went numb. Like my brain can't' send messages to body. i could walk so far and brain gets lost and doesn't know what to do. Does anyone else have similar symptoms ? How do you cope with body weakness, inability to chest breathe. I only get little puffs of air in and then it completely stops. brain tingles and burns.. by head feels like a bowling ball on a toothpick of a spine. When I stand up.. I feel weakness in my brain instantly and from waist down feels weak when standing. abdomen muscles became weak.. burning tingling upper chest, upper arms. Neuro, docs don't help me at all.

Help, my doctor didn't give me a clear diagnosis (medication in my current country is bad) and I don't know what to call my injury,
I'm a teen and am a very stupidly active person. I fell from a height of about 10 feet and landed on sand with my feet. My friends took me to a public hospital before contacting my mom 3 hours later. Now, the lower part of my backbone hurts asf. I got a CT scan, and my doctor didn't explain the details. I googled it and the 1st Lumbar vertebrae is fractured, the inner part was squished, probably anterior. He just told me what to do and what not to do but I want to know my diagnosis.
I can move and feel but I can't lift both my legs at the same time when lying down. I can stand straight and sit down but I can't bend forward. Can someone please tell me which injury this is similar to? Or is it just called a bone fracture?
